Welcome to GameSpot Entertainment

Our new Entertainment section will deliver more on the movies, TV shows, comics, and toys that video game fans love.

You may have noticed that we’ve been experimenting with some non-game types of content on the site in recent months in the form of entertainment coverage. We’re all fans of this stuff, and we know many of you are too. The feedback on our entertainment stories has been great, and the time has come for us to finally expand what we're doing and give it a sense of place within the wider GameSpot site.

Today, we're launching GameSpot Entertainment, a new section of the site designed to hold all of our content around movies, TV, comics, and collectibles. Our objective here is to build a range of stories and videos that covers areas outside of gaming that are of interest to us, and we hope, to you too. Star Wars, Marvel, DC, The Walking Dead--these are just some of the things you can expect to see more of in the new section of the site.

As some of you may know, we also have a site called Comic Vine that GameSpot owner CBS Interactive acquired along with Giant Bomb back in 2012. The team over at Comic Vine have done an amazing job expanding their core coverage of the comics world to also include TV, movies, toys, and collectibles. I am very excited to say that effective immediately, the Comic Vine team (led by Tony Guerrero) will be officially joining the GameSpot team. Tony and the Comic Vine crew will spearhead the creation of news, features, and videos for GameSpot Entertainment, alongside their continuing responsibilities to Comic Vine and the community.

As GameSpot approaches our 20th anniversary in 2016, we'll continue to be primarily focused on delivering the best video game coverage around. But now you'll also get some of the other stuff we know video game fans love.

As always, we’re keen to hear your feedback. Hit us up in the comments below and let us know what you’d like to see in this new section of the site.

Now we need a filter option to control what news we want to see. I'd like my homepage to be strictly about games, maybe put an option the the profile. I hope the staff can do something in this regard.

@justbefahad: I think that's a great idea. One tab for gaming, the other strictly entertainment. Your profile option idea is good too. It would keep all of the bitching and moaning to a minimum.

I just hate how game reviews which was the main draw of GS is shafted to the side. They rarely do indie games anymore, which is quite sad.

@aiat_gamer: Was there a specific indie title that you didn't see a review from us? Not saying I can explain as to why it didn't happen, but we do review non-AAA titles and indies all the time.

@aiat_gamer: maybe it's just the fact that this year and last year we had like 10 30+hours games and they didn't have enough time

@Alurit: First of all, you really cant be sure of that unless you go ahead and count the hours for the games they reviewed last year VS this year. Second of all, it is sad that people like you only count AAA games, there are many indie games coming out that do not take much time to play through and are worth of a review. Checking out the reviews, the last one they did was 5 days ago, I highly doubt no other game could be finished and reviewed in 5 days. We just have to accept that the old GS is dead and gone, now they care about everything other than actually reviewing a game.

@aiat_gamer: with steam reviews, twitch and youtube game streaming and other features like that, I think professional reviews, both written and video, are being less and less read/watched and considered by gamers every day. if they focused it all on game reviews, they could not keep afloat, at least not at their current size. they might be adapting to survive. they're not stupid, they're analysing what generates more clicks, more traffic and more money from ads.

I’ve been a member at GameSpot for nearly 14 years and was already a frequent visitor by 1998. Hard to believe.

I look back fondly on the sometimes awkward but always awesome staff and content creators of the early days, all the site revisions, changes to the review scoring system, the fights and friends from the old OT and SW, GameSpot Complete, the abrupt farewell to GameSpot Complete, the Kane and Lynch controversy, and oh so much more but I’ll spare you the rest of my trip down memory lane because you know it too.

At some point during this journey gaming waded into the mainstream and with that came a certain degree of sterilization, but I’m of the opinion that GameSpot still has plenty of meat on its bones thanks in large part to several key staff members who are reminiscent of the people that drew me to GameSpot in the first place; guys like Greg Kasavin, Ryan Davis and Jeff Gerstmann who are unquestionably gamers first and Internet personalities second (if at all in some cases which is fine by me). I valued the information they shared because they were just smart gamers sharing the information they valued, and I think the same can be said for newer additions to the team like Danny O’Dwyer and Alexa Ray Corriea among others.

I’m not concerned that GameSpot is continuing to change and evolve (that’s just one of the constants here after all), and although I’m not thrilled with the addition of GameSpot Entertainment I’m a geek-of-all-trades and can see myself learning to appreciate the team’s efforts to widen the GS scope. (K, here comes the but…)

But, a decade ago I was visiting GameSpot daily hoping to catch an infrequent update because more often than not I would consider it a valuable nugget of industry news or peer opinion. In contrast, at present I find myself visiting daily knowing that there will be numerous content updates that I’ll have to sift through in order to find something I value. The former made me feel like a small part of the GameSpot team, but the latter makes me feel like one of the masses and a marketer’s target. Maybe that’s just the cost of doing business on the Internet in this day and age, or maybe this is just what it feels like to get older and realize that all the chatter isn’t directed at you anymore. Either way, as a long time GameSpotter it’s my sincerest hope that as your business continues to grow and evolve you maintain at least a small part of what brought so many of us here in the first place at the turn of the century.

Okay, now where did I misplace my Ensure…

This is kind of an afterthought, but I thought I’d drop this here for those of you haven’t had the pleasure of watching one of Greg’s reviews. No drama, no flair, no announcer voice... just a fellow gamer who’s enthusiastic about telling you why World of Warcraft is worth playing. I especially love the comments between 1:00 and 1:15.

@Schwah: I have been around here nearly as long as you. I still prefer some of the old gamespot themes and styles of their website. I like most of the improvements they have EXCEPT for the rating system. I still think they should go back to the categories and the 1/10 of a point accuracy instead of the rounding system they have now. I wouldn't mind seeing the occasional movie review. I still wish though that they also had the user point system. It was fun seeing my profile level up.

@Schwah: "Maybe that’s just the cost of doing business on the Internet in this day and age, or maybe this is just what it feels like to get older and realize that all the chatter isn’t directed at you anymore."

I think it's that. I've not been here for a very long time, but I've always felt that I'm here mainly because I like the staff. And that's a bit strange, because this website isn't really focused on its staff (and the staff also switches up relatively regularly, although the new people often turn out to be pretty cool aswell). Not in the way a website like GiantBomb is, for example. I've heard Danny talk about this several times and I agree with him that GS seems to be floating somewhere in-between a GB and an IGN. The staff members and editors have their own voice, but the website itself is rather mainstream and superficial in many ways.

I remember a few years back that GS was experimenting with daily live shows: Random Encounter, House of Horrors, Indie Hour, Skyrim Mods (which was a live show when it first started out), The Shaun Method, Combo Breaker, Torture Chamber, Peter Brown did a show about old games, etc. I really enjoyed those shows, but I don't think they were popular enough to justify the time and resources. I guess GS's general audience doesn't visit the site for that stuff. To me that's a bummer, but I guess it partly explains why they're moving in the current direction.

The thing is, now the focus isn't entirely on video games, there will always be 'entertainment' stories in the mix. And honestly part of what I loved about GameSpot all these years was the dedication to gaming news. Now things will just get lost in the clutter.

I'm not sure how this will keep Gamespot relevant, or how it wasn't relevant before. But I think most of the people who visit or used to visit GS will agree with me that much of what made Gamespot unique was lost whenever this website went through the redesign a few years ago. This is just a natural progression of where the people calling the shots wanted things to go for some time now. You can't really fool me by suggesting otherwise.

@Ovirew: they'll probably arrange that the "news" section is just about games, and the "entertainment" section is about everything else. if they do it, and you just wanna read about games, instead of hitting the homepage, hit the news section and you're good.

I don't care about your weigh in on rest of the entertainment industry because I already visit reputable sources for those particular branches. You'd do much better to focus on improving and elevating your heavily declining gaming section and extremely shallow and borderline infantile reviews and evaluations featured there.

@musalala: It's been in discussions. Part of the issue is that there is only a small handful of staff who are avid anime enthusiasts and none of them are editors.

People keep complaining about the non game related stories, yet the game coverage itself is no different than it has ever been, so I don't know why people keep acting like the site is suddenly awful considering the game coverage quality is just fine. I've loved this site for over a decade now and although there's been ups and downs (I still don't like the video players on the site now) I think the quality of the game coverage is great. I've MOSTLY enjoyed reviews even though I've had issues with them from time to time. And the gaming news is what I come here for every day. I usually don't even check the rest of the site, I just want the current news and finding news about a new movie trailer or some new DC Comics thing is great. More info that I'm interested in in the same place.

TL;DR Keep up the good work lads and lasses. I like the non game coverage so far, and since it isn't hurting the quality of the gaming coverage, I don't think there's anything to complain about.

@Jedilink109: Just look at the number of game reviews they are doing these days, the last game review they did was 5 days ago, they rarely do indie games anymore, the quality of reviews are all over the place and they have mixed in non-gaming news with gaming news in the most horrible way. There was a day where GS reviews were standard for buying a game and they carried weight, now they seem like a side thing. Anyway, there is always giantbomb. Well, it was good as long as it lasted, but after more than 10 years, it is time for me to move on to somewhere else.

Just because I like video games I must love toys and comics?

Also the music and tv show articles that gamespot have been posting annoy me. Mostly because I know they're only doing it on gamespot(a gaming site, it's in the name) because they want to expand there whole advertising business and selling favorable reviews.

@petek480: No you don't have to like those other kinds of entertainment. Don't worry, GS likely won't insert a comic review in the middle of a game review you're reading; just don't click on the other articles.

All businesses want to expand otherwise they get overtaken and cease to exist, then your gaming content will go too.

" The feedback on our entertainment stories has been great" hmmm must not be the comments I have been reading. You could make a Movie Spot or Entertainment Spot.

If you really care about our feedback then just do thing one little thing for me and others like my self that mostly come here for gaming news. A "filter" to remove all none gaming news content on gamespot /news/.
