Where's Our Halo 5: Guardians Review?

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Our opinion is on its way.

Halo 5: Guardians releases on Tuesday. It's 343 Studios' first release since Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and the developer's second original title to date. But although the review embargo is up for the shooter's impending release, we're holding our full scored opinion until we're confident the public servers are running smoothly tomorrow. If all goes according to plan on Halo 5's end, you can read the review soon, along with a video portion to show the series' new gameplay mechanics and sci-fi worlds.

The strength of the servers notwithstanding, I have played through the campaign in both single and four-player cooperative modes. And I'm torn: Its level design leads to some of the best missions in the Halo franchise, with varying elevations, open-ended sandbox areas, and gorgeous sci-fi worlds. The campaign's structure is also more nuanced than those of previous installments, bouncing you between two teams of Spartans as they chase--and evade--the other across alien worlds.

There are problems with its story, though--not so much in what it says, but how it says it. Cutscenes end prematurely, character motivations shift on a whim, and I'm often confused as to what planet I'm on, or how I got there. This campaign is energetic and fast-paced, and seldom slows down to let you breathe. But it lacks the storytelling splendor I was hoping for with such a diverse cast of characters.

I've also played classic competitive multiplayer modes such as Slayer, Team Slayer, Capture the Flag, and Swat across a variety of maps. These modes, now comprising what 343 is calling Arena mode, are still as fine-tuned as always. They also ditch the loadout-based progression system--a la Call of Duty--introduced in Halo 4. Instead of unlocking new weapons to outfit your character at the outset of each match, Arena scatters power items throughout each environment, bringing back that classic Halo feel in a welcome return to form.

But Halo 5's multiplayer also diverts into unexplored territory with a brand new mode. It's called Warzone, and it contains some of the most dynamic, thoughtful, frantic multiplayer matches I've seen since the franchise marked the dawn of Xbox Live. Warzone is inspired by the pervasive MOBA genre. It combines player vs. environment and player vs. player elements, and there's no one way to win a match.

You can mow through enemy AI, kill opposing human players, bring down skilled mini-bosses, and capture neutral strongholds. Almost anything you choose to do contributes to your team's efforts, and the sprawling maps encourage multiple avenues of approach. Warzone may be the thing to keep me hooked on Halo 5. And the Requisition system, which grants you weapon, vehicle, and ability cards to burn in Warzone maps, creates a rewarding economy for consistent players.

In the end, Halo 5 introduces some of the most drastic changes to the longrunning franchise. Both in multiplayer and campaign, there are additions and iterations in almost every area, and even veteran players will find a fresh experience waiting for them. If 343's multiplayer servers perform as they should after tomorrow's release, we'll have a review up afterward, with in-depth analysis of all the changes in Halo 5: Guardians.

Played about 8 hours so far last night and today and not one online issue. I have been playing Warzone and Breakout Arena only though so far. Brilliant game that is alot of fun, especially online.

No issues at all though with bugs or matchmaking or lag, this is a very good release day for the multiplayer.

It's a good Halo game, like all of them in the past were. But it's just another Halo game, and the multiplayer is where everyone will be. The graphics are slightly better than Halo 4.

@SDMF_TrueBlue: Multiplayer is a much more important part of Halo than MGS. Also, the last Halo game from 343 had real busted multiplayer, so it's probably best to wait and see if Halo 5's works.

But I mean hey, if you feel like they should just go ahead and give Halo 5 a 10/10 right now ...

15 missions and only 3 have you playing the Chief. Dishonest marketing indeed. The rest of the missions have you chasing after Chief as boring by the numbers Locke. Who thought this was a good idea?

I say this as someone who has absolutely no intention of buying Halo 5 (I don’t really like it and I’m terrible at first person shooters) but the game appears to be being held to slightly different standards to other games. People want an amazing campaign and multiplayer, when the other two contenders (CoD and Battlefield) are allowed to get away with the campaign being a complete afterthought and solely rely on multiplayer. And from what people are saying about Halo 5, the multiplayer is superb.

Gamespot will give this an eight, which is a perfectly reasonable score, but their criteria always seem to be changing. It will get marked down for an element that other games get to treat as an afterthought.

@cranston53: If you are looking for any fairness or logic in the concept of reviews, you are wasting your time. This is the whole issues with reviews in general. It is totally subjective and it depends on the personal tastes of the reviewer.

e.g., This site gave GTA V a 10, which I bought, played and I cannot stand.
It doesnt mean its a bad game, it just means it is not my type of game.

I guess what I am saying is that reviewers need to stop taking their opinions so seriously, and so do we. I like the approach Eurogamer has taken for not using scores, instead just focusing on a simple categorization based on their opinion into Recommended, neutral and avoid. It is essentially all we should really expect when asking someone else their opinion on a game.

@cranston53: I think this has to do with expectations. We're not attached to anyone in the COD or Battlefield universes. Halo has an iconic hero and past games have managed to tell competent and moderate stories to go along with the excellent gameplay. A new Halo must always carry the burden of being compared to the rest in the series. It's to the franchises credit that we expect a little bit more because past games are some of the best FPS's in gaming history.

@Bread_or_Decide: I agree completely and there is nothing in the least bit wrong with those high expectations. It's not that I wouldn't want them applied to Halo, it's that I would hope they are also used to evaluate Cod and Battlefront.

For example, Battlefront, a game with the most fertile lore in popular culture, doesn’t even have a single player campaign! You would think that this would mark it down to an immediate seven or so, to say nothing of how much they are charging, but it won’t.

Anyway, I agree with you, and if it does end up with an eight, then that’s still a great score. I just think other games get rated way, way too highly. Nine should be rare, and ten should be once in a console generation.

Lets not kid ourselves here. The game is a bust in the single player campaign mode and the marketing trailers, and all the other marketing hyping the story, is nothing like they said it would be. Gamespot is holding back the review because this way they can play nice with Microsoft under the guise of "wanting to see the game under the live server platform" which is the latest scapegoat (This has been used before) for low scoring games in which they know they will damage their publisher relationship - which frankly, is all they give a rip about.

It is a very consumer unfriendly market right now. Even Metacritic, even though the game is released, isn't allowing user reviews until 15 hours from now.

How many people have had enough of this garbage? My money is going to Fallout 4.

@Utnayan: I agree with your general point, but Fallout 4 not the example to use. Bethesda are treated with kid gloves by game journalists. We all know it will get a ten, regardless of bugs and technical flaws.

Their games are some of the most inflated reviews in the business.

@Mogan: I am actually more interested in why Metacritic is blocking user reviews when the game is officially launched. Combined obviously with this site, and IGN, and their "convenient" delay when AI bugs are plaguing the already mediocre single player campaign, which was falsely advertised.

I've got nothing against this, but there have been reviews of games by GS that were done before the online bugs were worked out (I think the latest SimCity was like that) and they got docked points because it wasn't "finished". Either GS is being selective who they grant this grace to or they actually learned something.

@93ChevyNut: I imagine The Master Chief Collection has something to do with Gamespot delaying the next 343 Halo game's review until after they make sure the online infrastructure works. Multiplayer being at least as big a draw for Halo as the single player, it working right in the wild is a pretty important aspect to cover in a review. Can't really say that about MGSV.

@93ChevyNut: They're definitely being selective... I mean MGSV got a 10 without even shipping with the MP modes... or a complete story lol. They also haven't done a follow up review of just the MP mode so... it's pretty darn unlikely this is the new normal, it's just some special circumstance here.

I'd like to see them do this for every game though... very sick of busted up games getting great scores because they're reviewed under special circumstances.

close to finished with the campaign (I think). and I got to say these have got to be the dumbest AI buddy's I have ever seen in a shooter, seriously what were the programmers thinking? they are dumb. super stupid. and on top of it you get one button to try and command them around. but all the contextual power in the world would not save these stupid bots from trying to run right through groups of bad guys to get to wherever you said to go/ attack/ revive/ use turret. your orders are apparently so absolute in this game that they cant even shoot while running from point A to point B. not that they even shoot while on standby unless you expressly say to. your pretty much sent into battle with three cheer leaders disguised as Spartans.

@chippiez: They say it plays out more like a part one in a three part trilogy but the part does not stand on its own. Even if a story is a planned trilogy each part needs to stand on its own.

Played Arena Breakout and Warzone from 9pm until 4:22am. It is a real blast, the best halo online since Halo 2 no doubt about it. Havn't even jumped into the campaign yet, but those two multiplayer modes are going to be played many a hours I can tell you that much!

Warzone feels like something new mixed with some old ideas (reminds me of some ways of bf and unreal 2k4 mixed with older halo) and then the Breakout reminds me classic Arena style, one life and you are out goodness. Two different styles of multiplayer and I love em both to bits so far. Not sure how the campaign is but the multiplayer is fantastic!

Also so far no bugs or server/matchmaking issues, great game so far!

cowardly gamespot.... waiting for others to make a review first so you can then add yours? Yes, that happens if you fail-review all the time and have people move over to IGN permanently. You guys need an overhaul in employees.
