Where's Our Halo 5: Guardians Review?

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Our opinion is on its way.

Halo 5: Guardians releases on Tuesday. It's 343 Studios' first release since Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and the developer's second original title to date. But although the review embargo is up for the shooter's impending release, we're holding our full scored opinion until we're confident the public servers are running smoothly tomorrow. If all goes according to plan on Halo 5's end, you can read the review soon, along with a video portion to show the series' new gameplay mechanics and sci-fi worlds.

The strength of the servers notwithstanding, I have played through the campaign in both single and four-player cooperative modes. And I'm torn: Its level design leads to some of the best missions in the Halo franchise, with varying elevations, open-ended sandbox areas, and gorgeous sci-fi worlds. The campaign's structure is also more nuanced than those of previous installments, bouncing you between two teams of Spartans as they chase--and evade--the other across alien worlds.

There are problems with its story, though--not so much in what it says, but how it says it. Cutscenes end prematurely, character motivations shift on a whim, and I'm often confused as to what planet I'm on, or how I got there. This campaign is energetic and fast-paced, and seldom slows down to let you breathe. But it lacks the storytelling splendor I was hoping for with such a diverse cast of characters.

I've also played classic competitive multiplayer modes such as Slayer, Team Slayer, Capture the Flag, and Swat across a variety of maps. These modes, now comprising what 343 is calling Arena mode, are still as fine-tuned as always. They also ditch the loadout-based progression system--a la Call of Duty--introduced in Halo 4. Instead of unlocking new weapons to outfit your character at the outset of each match, Arena scatters power items throughout each environment, bringing back that classic Halo feel in a welcome return to form.

But Halo 5's multiplayer also diverts into unexplored territory with a brand new mode. It's called Warzone, and it contains some of the most dynamic, thoughtful, frantic multiplayer matches I've seen since the franchise marked the dawn of Xbox Live. Warzone is inspired by the pervasive MOBA genre. It combines player vs. environment and player vs. player elements, and there's no one way to win a match.

You can mow through enemy AI, kill opposing human players, bring down skilled mini-bosses, and capture neutral strongholds. Almost anything you choose to do contributes to your team's efforts, and the sprawling maps encourage multiple avenues of approach. Warzone may be the thing to keep me hooked on Halo 5. And the Requisition system, which grants you weapon, vehicle, and ability cards to burn in Warzone maps, creates a rewarding economy for consistent players.

In the end, Halo 5 introduces some of the most drastic changes to the longrunning franchise. Both in multiplayer and campaign, there are additions and iterations in almost every area, and even veteran players will find a fresh experience waiting for them. If 343's multiplayer servers perform as they should after tomorrow's release, we'll have a review up afterward, with in-depth analysis of all the changes in Halo 5: Guardians.

So many salty X1 owners after i've asked if the review will be under the "dynamic resolution" wow. Shows how mediocre this so called dynamic resolution really is, you're ashamed of it. But you're stuck with it so move on with your life and accept it as is. Accept 810p gaming in your heart.

@silversix_: My Xbox One has been collecting more dust than my Wii U. And that's saying something. This was one of the reasons to have an Xbox One, and now I am not even going to get this piece of garbage until it goes on sale. A big sale at that. Thank God we still have Fallout 4, and Witcher 3 DLC.

@silversix_: i watched the digitalfoundy video and you are right about the dynamic resolution... it looks pretty rough around the edges. there is constant texture and shadow pop in. low res textures turning into high res textures right before your eyes. the changes are very abrupt and noticeable. for a flagship game, you would expect better results. i guess they did the best they could with the hardware limitations.

@Xristophoros: It would look best on PC but no doubt it won't come to PC which is why i bought an Xbox rather than go through if, buts and maybes :)

I just want to say that I support GS waiting til release so they can see how it performs online in the real world.

Too many games have come out with nasty surprises on Day 1. I don't care about Halo but I hope this trend continues for games with a heavy online element.

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: True, it gives it a fair result, so many games are released with bugs, sometimes completely unfinished.
for once I am thankful to GS for doing this, brings back what reviews are really for - The whole released finished product.

@Zombie8814: it certainly would explain why they're holding the review...like for example, we didn't get any explanation on why there is no review per se, just a guy hyping it. Is it just 343 following a bad streak? what with halo collection turning out not so ok.

Master chief collection is the only game I've bought on release day, and returned it within a week. Yet I'm still buying Halo 5 on release day. Something tells me they wasted tons of money on servers they wont even need after release week just to make up for it.

@tunaman44: Buying on release day? So you're a beta tester?

Personally, I prefer to play a game that's actually finished. But that's just me.

@tunaman44: I wouldn't worry about the servers. MCC was four games working together. Halo 5 is one game. Everyone seems to forget how Halo 4 had almost no problems.

@xenomorphalien: I wish they would fix the framerate on 1st Halo game rather than worry about MP :(

Plus there are so many issues with the sound going haywire on surround sound with creatures dying and weapons spinning around stuck into walls. You hear the same repetitive noise non stop at times.

Still love the game despite all this going on though

@deviltaz35: I think that's because Halo 1 already got a remaster so they tried to focus more on the others that didn't get a graphical upgrade, especially 2.

"we're holding our full scored opinion until we're confident the public servers are running smoothly tomorrow."

So basically it sucked and Gamespot wants to give 343 Studios a chance to sell all of it's Pre-Orders to uninformed customers before they slam it. I've heard of Review embargoes but this is the first time in gamer history a review company has used this as an excuse.

@Drkoolbeanz: Other reviews are out, the embargo is up. It's completely within Gamespot's profit interest to release their review asap for ad revenue and to ride the hype. Holding the review to check the servers sounds like a believable reason, unless you can think of another reason it would help to wait?

@Drkoolbeanz: No they are doing this because games like BF4 and Halo MCC had server issues on launch. If no one can get on to play some matchmaking it will get a good deal of a lower score.
