Why Microsoft Believes In Cross-Gen And No Exclusives For Xbox Series X

Sony is releasing PS5-only games, but Microsoft is putting its games on both new consoles and old, as well as PC.

With the launch of next-generation consoles coming up later this year, Microsoft and Sony are ushering in the next era of gaming. The companies are taking slightly different approaches. Sony has said it plans to release PS5-exclusive titles right out of the gate, while Microsoft has spoken time and again about not doing this with the Xbox Series X, and instead launching titles across its family of devices.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer told GI.biz that he's so passionate about this because he wants to make Microsoft's games available to people no matter what device they have. Forcing people to buy new hardware is against what the spirit of gaming is all about, Spencer said.

"As a player you are the centre of our strategy," Spencer said. "Our device is not the centre of our strategy, our game is not the centre of the strategy. We want to enable you to play the games you want to play, with the friends you want to play with, on any device. On TV, the Xbox console is going to be the best way to play console games."

The Series X is the most powerful console Microsoft has ever made, and people who play games on that system will get to experience the "best version" of Microsoft's games when it comes to fidelity and performance, Spencer said. That being said, Spencer said he doesn't want to exclusive anyone from Microsoft's games, so the company will continue to release new games on the regular Xbox One, as well as PC.

"Gaming is about entertainment and community and diversion and learning new stories and new perspectives, and I find it completely counter to what gaming is about to say that part of that is to lock people away from being able to experience those games," Spencer said. "Or to force someone to buy my specific device on the day that I want them to go buy it, in order to partake in what gaming is about."

"Gaming is bigger than any one device, and that is something as an industry that we've embraced all up as we bring more and more players in. I think it's vital to the role that gaming can play on the planet."

The difference in policies between Sony and Microsoft in this regard has led to some portion of the audience criticizing Microsoft for "holding back" the power of new games to accomodate older hardware. Spencer thinks this is a bunch of baloney--just look at the PC market, he said.

"Frankly, held back is a meme that gets created by people who are too caught up in device competition," Spencer said. "I just look at Windows. It's almost certain if the developer is building a Windows version of their game, then the most powerful and highest fidelity version is the PC version. You can even see that with some of our first-party console games going to PC, even from our competitors, that the richest version is the PC version. Yet the PC ecosystem is the most diverse when it comes to hardware, when you think about the CPUs and GPUs from years ago that are there."

With Xbox Game Pass and xCloud, Microsoft no longer even needs you to buy any Xbox model to become an Xbox user.

I'll probably get both but a lot of the PS4 exclusives, I honestly didn't enjoy. Sure, I liked Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, Days Gone, The Last of Us 2, and Uncharted Lost Legacy but Blood Bourne, God of War, and every other Uncharted game? Never bothered to finish them because I just couldn't get into them for one reason or another. Most of my favorite and most anticipated games tend to be third party so I'm gonna want them on the console that they'll look the best on, and having it be backwards compatible for most of my old games when I'm feeling nostalgic is a bonus. So Xbox Series X first, then the PS5 whenever the next Horizon game comes out.

@UrbanMessiah: I am with you there buddy. I cannot get myself to finish many PS4 exclusives either.

The games that I really want & play are games like: Crysis, FEAR, Dead Space, Aliens Colonial Marines (fixed), Terminator Salvation, Vanquish, Titanfalls & I especially love the campaign, COD campaign, BF4 campaign...etc. PS4 exclusives are fun for a minute, but get boring fast & do not compare to the action of the aforementioned ones! There are times when I want to slow it down for a bit, but still I cannot stay on it for too long. This is just my reality & the way I play.

GOW I love though!!!

@UrbanMessiah: You've mentioned a bunch of PS exclusives you didn't like but not a single Xbox exclusive you did. How come? Surely there'd be dozens of titles that should have come to mind right away.

@Atzenkiller: Mostly because the games I really like tend to be third party, not exclusive. However, I do love the Forza Horizon games, Gears of War 4 and 5, and the State of Decay games. I took a break from the Halo games because I got gurned out on first-person for a while but I just recently got into the Master Chief collection so I'll probably go through the rest.

@UrbanMessiah: I always get all consoles (and yes I have a high-end gaming PC before the elitists jump in) but I'm in a pretty similar boat, I enjoyed Horizon, Spiderman and Persona which were my favourite exclusives but when it comes to most of the other PS exclusive titles, there's just not a lot that holds my attention.

Never played Days Gone or Bloodborne (Never liked Dark Souls games although Sekiro and Jedi Fallen Order have converted me a little so might try it at some point). Never played Uncharted past the first title which I never finished (it just made me want to play Tomb Raider tbh). Enjoyed Last of Us 1 but thought 2 was rather mediocore. I don't remember liking/disliking God of War (this was my first GoW title) but I stopped playing it after a couple days and have had no desire to return to it, so take that however you will.

On the other hand. Xbox has had very few exclusives but most of them I have actually finished and thanks to gamepass, I have even finished titles I would otherwise probably have never even tried like Ryse, Quantum Break and Crackdown. Forza is still my go to racing series. Halo 5 had a shit story but they nailed the multiplayer and is probably one of my most played games this generation including Halo Wars 2 and the MCC. Rare Replay pack probably has more hours in it alone than all my PS4 titles put together and Ori is probably one of my favourite games of the generation.

Gamepass has been the real standout for me honestly and along with Halo Infinite, pretty much the reason why Xbox will be a day 1 purchase and PS5 will likely wait until Horizon 2 launches. I have completed so many games I would otherwise have never purchased myself due to gamepass like Quantum Break, Ryse, Life is Strange, MGS:V, the Metro titles, Surge 1/2, Nier, Plague Tale, Rage 2, Remnant, Sea of Thieves, Outer WIlds, Mortal Kombat, Kingdom Come, Hellblade, pretty much all the Telltale games and the list goes on. I'm playing through Kingdom hearts at the moment and revisiting all the Fable games from the renewed hype. Even Fallout 76 will likely have some shortlived co-op fun now its on there.

Without listing them out, my top 20 (probably even 30+) games of this generation would include several Xbox exclusive games but wouldn't even include a single PS4 exclusive title (except FF7 which I borrowed from my brother to play because I was waiting for the new consoles before purchasing it and it is timed exclusive anyway so doesn't really count and I'll be purchasing it myself for Xbox instead).

In terms of power, controller design, online, and options. Xbox rocks.

Wish they would focus on the same level of exclusives quality. I know this is highly opinion based and I don't want to offend but I can't stand the exclusive type stuff we got on xbox one that we can't play on ps4 or switch. I'm sorry but I really feel like games like halo 5, gears 4/5, and the few other unmemorable ones like Quantum glass or whatever it's called, Ruse son of historical inaccuracy, and dead rising 3, killer instinct, state of decay 2, titan fail, halo who cares wars 2... Ori seems kool though lol.

So on the games here that I CAN'T play on ps4 and switch just suck sooo hard to me lol. Many of them have bullcrap micro transactions.

Mean while Ps4 has blood bourne, god of war 4, spider man, FF7remake, last of us part 2... And of course the 3rd party games that rock too. Just feels like I have more fun over here on ps4 land. Just my personal opinion. Which is why I can't really be stoked for xbox. Especially when they say that exclusives are not a big priority for them. My question is... It it too much to ask for both? Bungie halo games were like my fav games... Why can't you guys make games that are on that level of quality today?????

I know... Opinion stuff. Just how I feel personally. Which is why I'm more of a sony pony these days and less of a x bot lol.

Learning to like the ps4 controller just as much as the xbox controller. Not really a online gamer anymore since it's kind of ruined by lag, cheaters, micro transactions, same feeling games all the time etc etc... Having less power than the xbox kind of blows but graphics and power are minor things compared to how much fun you're having with the games. And since the fun in my opinion is higher with ps4 than it is with xbox one. This is a plus that's in my favor. Ps4 options are not too far behind xboxes so it's kool. There is the better backwards compat for xbox one but I keep all of my old games and consoles so this isn't a big deal for me. Still got a modded reg xbox hooked up and a few 360s to play halo reach and what not.

Feel like sony will still be noticeably on top in terms of gamer popularity of the xbox this next gen. Unlike before when the 360 sold just about as much as the ps3. That's just my take.

I think you're still holding back if that's the case. Nothing is really built from the ground up, specifically for the console. From a sales perspective, why should anyone even buy the new console? I would hate if this was Sony's plan.

@mooglestar: It is a pro consumer move and as a PC gamer as well as Xbox owner I really appreciate it. I prefer rewarding companies that promote pro consumer moves than those that don't.

Basically when you buy an Xbox console you just don't get a console but an ecosystem that allows you to play your Xbox games not just over multiple Xbox console generations but also on many platforms including PCs, laptops, and soon tablets and smart phones via XCloud.

@firedrakez: Companies don't do anything because it's "pro consumer". They only do things that increase their profits. "Pro consumer moves" tend to lower them. Unless they lead to some image boost or other competitive advantage, which I'm not seeing here. Nothing that would make it worth their while at least. So I can only assume that they're pursuing some other strategy. Maybe trying to profit more from PC sales through their store now instead of onyl relying on the Xbox as they did in the past, when they couldn't even be bothered to release the Halo games for PC, the platform the first game was initially being developed for.

But even if they wanted to move over from making consoles to running their own game streaming services, I highly doubt they'd just drop the console business like that. After all their chances of success at this are very slim since there's already some streaming services out there and MS is not likely to do a better job than any of those. So my guess is that their service will fail or end up like the MS store. It might bring in some extra income. Not really sure how profitable the MS store actually is. But it's basically free money as maintaining such a store requires very little cost and effort but you get to keep all the profits for yourself, while taking a cut from all third party sales. Could that store ever replace having a dedicated console though? Not likely. MS is just way behind in every regard, so the Xbox is pretty much the only thing they have currently. If they let that die their gaming division would die with it.

@Atzenkiller: First of all Xbox has already announced that this year has been the most profitable year for them in terms of PC sales so their strategy to release their exclusives on PCs is clearly succeeding.

Secondly they have announced that they were to achieve 10 million subscribers on their Gamepass subscription within the space of only a couple of years and is still growing rapidly so their GAAS model has proven to be quite successful.

It seems with Gamepass and XCloud they are more focused at reaching the billions of potential customers on PCs, phones, tablets, etc and not just the niche market of millions on consoles which makes a lot of business sense for them especially with their global server infrastructure and they are not abandoning the console market either if you look at the investments they have made.

@firedrakez: pro consumer when theyre trying to sell a console that is held back and down by games that are forced to run on a coffee maker also?

it kinda is, but then it is not. i kind of appreciate phils thoughts but then not. nowadays i prefer pc because it can do so many things besides games, it does have an amazing backwards compatibility if you work for it and most games are at their best.

the thing that i liked about consoles was the combined power and convenience. if ms wants an ecosystem going through all devices that probably means hassle

@firedrakez: To each their own. For me, as a consumer who has owned a PS4 since it came out, I want to spend my money and get something special that my old console can't do. I don't want a new console if the graphics are a bit better and it runs a bit faster.

@mooglestar: I understand. I also like many of the PS4's exclusives which I play on PC via PSNow.

I just like Xbox's ecosystem better especially since they provide subscriptions that cater to PCs and Xbox gamers like Gamepass Ultimate that has somewhat different libraries for PC and Xbox and includes many recently released games.

If MS does buy Warner Bros Games though, you might want to consider getting an Xbox console in the future as their library includes many AAA hits like Batman, LOTR, Mortal Kombat, LEGO, Harry Potter assuming of course MS gets the license to publish those games from AT&T once the deal is done.

@firedrakez: Why would I need to buy the console if I can just play all those games on a PC? Microsofts cross platform play model is very confusing from a console sales point of view, as in I don't need an Xbox to play Xbox games. If this is the route they are taking then they should just shutter the Xbox department and shift focus to just games.

@khelandros: Most gamers can't afford a PC so I am sure they will still prefer a console. The Xbox Series X has the specs of a high end PC anyways at only 1/3 to 1/4 the price of an equivalent PC so you get more for your buck.

Besides you get plenty of games on Gamepass on Xbox One that you don't get on Gamepass for PC and vice versa. For instance I can play Red Dead Redemption 2 and Devil May Cry 6 on Gamepass on Xbox One which isn't available on the PC version. I also can play the console exclusive RDR 1 in 4K on my Xbox One X which I can't do on PC and I think the story for that is better than RDR 2.

@firedrakez: Unfortunately I'm much too busy to be able to play two consoles. I have plenty backlog on PS4 as it is. And of those games you mentioned, Batman would be the biggest loss of the bunch. The rest I don't care about. Although I suppose if I cared enough I could play them on PC.

Regardless, Sony's exclusives have always appealed to me more. So I definitely won't be switching. But its whatever you like really. Once you're happy.

@mooglestar: That is fine. I really enjoyed playing God of War 2018 on my PC via PSNow and am going through some of the previous entries in the series as well.

I also have a backlog on both my Xbox consoles and PCs as well that I need to go through first so I understand the reluctance on getting another platform.

Besides for me I can afford to be patient and wait for the Playstation games I like to appear on PC either directly via port or via PSNow sub. It is not like I haven't missed playing those games eventually.
