Wii sales top 67 million, DS over 125 million

Despite slowing sales, Nintendo's console and handheld continue to set records; over 688 million DS games, 509 million Wii games sold to date.

As part of its nine-month earnings release this morning, Nintendo also revealed its life-to-date sales for its uber-popular Wii console and DS handheld. Though slowing sales of both platforms contributed to the company's 23.1 percent sales decline from April to December 2009, the two platforms continue to widen their lead over competitors in the current hardware generation.

After years in third place with the GameCube, Nintendo is now the current-generation king.
After years in third place with the GameCube, Nintendo is now the current-generation king.

As of December 31, 2009, some 67.45 million Wiis had been sold worldwide, solidifying Nintendo's console dominance in a way that was unimaginable during the third-place GameCube era. By region, the console has sold 9.72 million units in Japan, 32.02 million units in North and South America, and 25.71 million units in Europe and elsewhere.

Wii software hasn't fared too badly either, with 509.66 million games for the console sold worldwide through December. Of those, 46.57 million games were sold in Japan, 275.84 million in the Americas, and 187.24 million in Europe and other territories. According to Nintendo's earnings report today, the top new Wii games last year were Wii Sports Resort (13.58 million units through December), New Super Mario Bros. Wii (10.55 million), and Wii Fit Plus (10.16 million).

Meanwhile, the DS further cemented itself as the all-time best-selling game platform by topping the 125-million-unit mark--125.13 million units, to be exact. Of those, 29.2 million were sold in Japan, 44.99 million in the Americas, and 50.23 million in Europe and other territories.

The DSi has sold more than 16.43 million units by itself.
The DSi has sold more than 16.43 million units by itself.

From the DS total, Nintendo broke out sales of the DSi, introduced last year. The camera-equipped portable has sold 16.43 million units through December, including 4.66 million in Japan, 6.16 million in the Americas, and 5.61 million elsewhere. The supersized DSi XL is available only in Japan, where it sold 700,000 units (and is called the DSi LL).

On the software side, the DS also reigns supreme, with a whopping 688.29 million games sold worldwide as of the end of 2009. 171.99 million of those games were bought in Japan and 261.90 million were bought in North and South America. The remaining 254.41 million were picked up in the UK, the rest of Europe, Australia, and other regions. Top new DS games last year included Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver (3.74 million units), Tomodachi Collection (2.74 million), and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (2.45 million).

let's see some more statistics: 7,56 Wii games per Wii 4,79 Wii games per Wii in Japan 8,61 Wii games per Wii in NA and SA 7,28 Wii games per Wii in Europe 5,50 DS games per DS 5,89 DS games per DS in Japan 5,82 DS games per DS in NA and SA 5,06 DS games per DS in Europe Although most DS are sold in Europa and other territories, more games have been sold in NA and SA, but again most games per DS have the Japanise, but when it comes to Wii we can see that Japanese aren't fond to it, you see that NA and SA has most games per Wii. Well congrats to Nintendo on those number and hopefully they will use it to get more core gamers :)

...looks like Nintendo's on a roll (again)! There wasn't any big titles for the Wii last year (NSMBW the best on Wii last year), but this year is going to be different! None of the Titles on PS3/360 would stop the likes of Tatsunoko vs Capcom (it's under-rated because it's a Wii game (like how fanboyish is that), looking for stupid excuses to bring the score down), Monster Hunter 3, No More Heroes 2, Red Steel 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M and the latest Zelda yet... all I could see is Final Fantasy XIII and Super Street Fighter 4, those are the only major titles for me, and those aren't good enough to beat such line-up.

These numbers mean every Wii owner has like 8 games, I know 6 people that have Wii's, and they Only have the Original Wii Sports, I'm the exeption because I also have Twillight Princess, Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario. So who out there is buying all these games.......

And the biggest losers of Nintendo's success are third parties through publishers and stupid fanboy developers.

It is nice to see Nintendo still doing well but at the same time I think it is over-rated. Like I have all of the systems, and My PS3 gets played the most, my X-Box 360 is second, and my Wii hasnt been touch in over a year or two. There are not a alot of great games for the Wii, so even though the sales are good, I am sure alot of those people who got it have it dusting somewhere, cause I know alot of Nintendo fans mentioned that. Even with the DS, there are alot more families now that have three kids that are 6 to 14 and maybe one teenager in the family. I remember eating at a restuarant in Vancouver and I saw this family sitting there, three of them are around the age of 6 to 9 and one of them was a teenager. Three of those kids were holding a DS, and the teenager was playing with the PSP. So to me and alot of people I know, the Wii is the weakest when it comes to games. So people shouldnt judge a system by how many units is sold.

@zzamaro you make a list and almost none of those strike me as a good game (considering I own a ps3) Fact is the only fun game on the ps3 imo is WarHawk (getting mag )while on the wii I got a list of good games to play I dont own a 360 so I wont comment on its games (except Halo is over rated).

Kinda off-topic, but if the Wii released a Wii HD, would that be a comparison to Sony's slim and Xbox's arcade in it being a new version, or would it signal the eight generation of gaming consoles, like the DS did? I think just an upgrade, because Nintendo tends to not use the same general names for different generations. Oh well, I could be wrong.

@frankmcsunam Yes...it's saturated with bad third party games like: No More Heroes No More Heroes 2 Tatsunoko vs Capcom Muramasa: The Demon Blade Resident Evil 4 Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles Dead Space Extraction Boom Blox Silent Hill: Shattered Memories Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure Okami Trauma Center: New Blood Rayman Raving Rabbids Madworld NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams Guilty Gear XX Accent Core ....wait a minute...those are all good. (Some are great!) Should I go on? My mistake! I guess I just made you look rather silly didn't I...sorry about that.

i dont see why people are now claiming that graphics are non-important...more like they are not important to the Wii's target audience, which is not surprising. you dont even really need stellar graphics for most of nintendos games. gameplay is still the primary concern, but really good graphics can add a lot to a games detail and atmosphere, which is important for games that, well....arnt party games or are more focused on plot and story.

If I owned a Wii, I would only buy the Mario and Zelda games for it. The rest of them are awful, and the entire console is over saturated with bad third party games.

688,29 million of DS software sold!?!? That's fantastic!! So Nintendo shouldn't cry too much about piracy: in the big picture it isn't affecting business that much, luckily.

The overseas numbers show how very important they are to Nintendo, as more than half of its revenues come outside of Japan. It is not surprising that the best-selling Wii/DS titles are those published by Nintendo.

This proves that you don't have to have life-like graphics just to sell well. It all revolves around gameplay. You can have terrific graphics, but if the gameplay is stale, you pretty much wasted your money. On the other hand, you can have "terrible" graphics but as long as the gameplay is great, it will still be a good game and worth the money; like DS, that isn't graphically powerful as PSP, but that still sold a LOT.

what kills me, is that nintendo could have dipped into that warchest a little bit, and made the wii more powerful, how about something like 2 xboxes taped together instead of 2 gamecubes, ive read a lot of articles and in many ways the wii isnt even as powerful as an xbox (though stronger in others). Didnt need to match 360 or ps3, but even something stronger....finally got to be market leader again, and gave up on all the hardcore customers who kept them alive during the n64/gamecube era..

@Flint247 you wrote: Wii's library is nothing compared to dozens of mature games and shooters on 360/PS3? I could make a quality non-shooter and non-mature games on PS3/360: LittleBigPlanet Eternal Sonata Valkyria Chroniles Final Fantasy XIII Ratchet and Clank Banjo-Kazooie Star Ocean 4 Viva Pinata Tales of Vesperia Cross Edge Flower Fat Princess Street Fighter IV Tekken 6 SoulCalibur IV Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit and so on.... and if you ask me, wii is an awesome console but it's library sucks, over 80% of its games, sucks...

@izmickey I never said high sales meant Wii is the best. What I said was that obviously people like it, a lot. And everyone's entitled to their opinions. So if I did say Wii was the best, I'd be fully entitled to believe that. Sure, you may think there are better mp3 players out there than the iPod, and you may even be right, but others probably feel differently, and they're entitled to that.

All the brainwashed masses not enjoying their gaming systems, who knew. And to think, they continue to outsell the competition, what a concept simple gaming makes. Nah, I am just kidding. Just goes to show that you can tout all the hardware specs, letters HD, and online gaming all you want. Simplicity plus new control methods equal sells. Their fans can continue to shout as loud as they want, they just have to convince others to abandon the Wii and join them for more expensive gaming.

sales number don't mean much. as you see 360 and ps3 games have way more in depth gameplay than any of the ds/wii games as well as having better graphics. and btw ps2 is still the best selling console of all time over 138 million units as of august 2009 and still games being released for the last gen console.

that's very impressive, I love the DS when I'm playing the right games, I really liked games like the Ace Attorney series, Trauma Center, the Zelda games... hell, I loved Cooking Mama on the DS though, the Zelda games for the DS were developed by Nintendo EAD Software Group #3, the ones that brought us Twilight Princess and are bringing us the next Zelda game, so if you ever wondered why it took so long for the next Zelda game on the Wii it's because the development team responsible had their hands tied making two Zelda games on the DS don't get me wrong, I liked the Zelda games on the DS, but I feel efforts to bring games to the Wii in a timely fashion are hurt because they use the studios that are responsible for that to make DS games, and for this I think that Nintendo should set up studios to work on franchises specifically for the DS and specifically for the Wii, that way we can have our Zelda games on both in a timely fashion, or for any other franchise for that matter
