Wii success = third-party woes?

After console's unexpected buzz from E3, TheStreet.com says game makers were caught unaware, will have few Wii games for holidays.

Nintendo may be able to pull off the ultimate "I told you so" this holiday season, after the Wii's surprise showing at E3 convinced publishers that its console was the real deal, says TheStreet.com's Troy Wolverton.

Even though publisher support for the innovative console has ramped up greatly since E3, many companies will miss reaping the benefits of the Wii's holiday launch.

An unnamed hedge fund manager told TheStreet.com that the only publisher poised for some Wii success early on is Ubisoft, which is unleashing the shooter/swordplay hybrid Red Steel. The other companies were "caught flat-footed," the source said.

After the GameCube placed a distant third in the current-gen console race, many publishers had all but written Nintendo off. "They weren't expecting anything," Simba Group analyst James Lin said.

At E3, many of the high-profile games showcased for the Wii were being developed in-house at Nintendo, while major third-party publishers seemingly approached the console with a "wait and see" attitude by offering up only a few games.

That attitude has since changed, with several publishers showing considerable interest in the console, most recently software giant Electronic Arts, which announced four new Wii games in development. Among the others jumping on the bandwiigon are Activision, which is bringing WWII to the Wii with Call of Duty 3, and THQ, which is rolling out its hit Cars for the console. Even 2K Sports, who repeatedly passed on putting titles on the GameCube, is getting in on the action.

"The reception this platform received at the E3 show ... is one that makes us take a real strong look at it," said Karl Winters of Take-Two Interactive, 2K Sports' parent label. Winters expects a 2K Sports baseball game on the console by late 2007 or 2008.

It may be too little, too late says Wolverton, who warns that "[third-party] companies will likely have [only a] few Wii games to offer this holiday as stocking stuffers."

You know... It's always bugged me that people will finish reading an article about the Wii of their own will and then have the gall to say "Who cares about the Wii." I mean... you must see it is a threat or at least find it interesting to have read the article, right? The Wii is definitely my first choice, but I'll probably get a PS3 after about the 3rd or 4th price drop... As for Microsoft they should stick with comps if you ask me.

I find it funny.... People keep saying how bad the Wii will be and everything, and that it's a disgrace.... If it's such a disgrace, why is there so much good feed about it? If you actually read this article, you'd be able to see that the game developers are warming up to it. That means they'll develop for the system, and bring a lot of games to it. Also, I've had so many friends go from saying it will be horrible to being really excited about it. This system will be extremely innovative, and I believe it will be incredible and an absolute joy to play, alone, or with friends. If you can't see past something as petty as a name, or if you can't see the rising anticipation for the console in the eyes of MILLIONS, you have more problems than a one sided opinion. I believe the Xbox 360 is a great system, and I believe the PS3 will bring something technologically incredible to the table, however the sheer price tag is a turn off for many, but also I believe if anything, their lack of personal creativity would be their downfall. Nintendo is a video game company. What are Microsoft and Sony? They make electronic devices, whether they're computers, tvs, or cd players. And they also make games. They've got power, but they've also got a lot of things to worry about besides the gaming buisness. Someone give him a biscuit, I totally agree. I'm getting a Wii first as this console seems just so fun and new, while the 360 and the PS3 will be more of the same, you may as well just play your old xbox (which I am doing, after selling the 360 I bought after launch). Nintendo are indeed the only real games company that create consoles. This however does not mean that other companies cannot come up with anything new, the PSP for example brings something fantastically new to the table. A handheld system that lets you play real games in 3D which don't have to be reduced in scale just because they are on a smaller medium. Sure there's no first party innovation on the games front, but third party games like RocoLoco and Every Extend Extra make up for this impeccably.

Has anyone noticed how intellectually brilliant Wii haters remarks are? It's astounding. I mean, what remark in favor of the Wii can possibly touch, "The Wii is a stupid name", or "Who cares about the Wii". Someting like that would at least require the mental prowess of a kindergartner (thats a five year old for those of you in Rio Lenda).

Friky00 do not judge the Wii by it's name and say the name will kill any respect towards videogames. The gamecube because of the kiddy games or lack of any gc only adult titles put it in third but more parents supported it as they do the ds instead of psp because of the games and the price. This fall the market is going to shift nintendo will rise and sony shall fall in the rankings simply based on the price and the titles listed for release. The wii is going to launch in october this is also bad for sony as is the fact that in october microsoft will launch several games including forza and gears of war. Sony has a name as the game giant nintendo once did as well so to say nintendo is going to die sony is king is stupid. Sony has gotten fat as a king and is missing the point as did nintendo that we wanted something else. Innovation, new experences that what gamers want and just one console with games from everyone.

As a sony fans i dont hate the Xbox anymore, Just cause all my HATE is towards the Wii. The stupidiest name ever for a console, wil the popular and gamers become the laughingstock of the world. Any posibilty of videogames being considered as art, any posibily of gamers being respect, any posibility of gaming being considered as a great hobbie is gonna be killed by this. Its sad even though Nintendo gived me so happy moments in my life, now i just hoped it died.

why whould it matter about the third party publishers. i mean they have zelda and that will probably be there killer app for the most part but the have mp3 and red steel wii sports and probably mario. who knows bout that. but its not like people will buy more than 5 games at launch they will get 2 or 3 and be settled on them. y are people worrying about this. as i remember sony and microsoft had sucky launches too but when halo and gta came out the consoles skyrocketed. but we have zelda at launch. wii will be fine

This is the the LARGER 3rd parties, who only considered developing for 360 and PS3 until recently, the Wii has alot more SMALL 3rd party developers who have seen Wii as the only viable platform for their ideas-these games are going to take longer because they are Small companies but hey-it's support. Half of the developers who are now being interested never considered the Gamecube due to their perception of it's coverage-and that silly business with acclaim going out of business and blaming it on the GC(they needed to make better games tbh-by a nintendo standard not a sony or MS standard). That basically damaged 3rd party support for Cube enough to make some developers consider it not viable. Problem is if the developers themselves are making games which they think are aimed at kids then the game WILL turn out rubbish-they miss the point of making a game aimed at everyone-must be western thinking, oh and perhaps the guys who make our games are a bit thick.

Short articles like this are amazing in so much as it really shows the fan-boys. This story can be seen as having both a positive and negative side for Nintendo. Its interesting to how much certain people spin this article and proclaim "Wii Sucks" or "Wii Rocks!". Comment on the article and leave the fan-boy wars out of it. Hind-sight is 20/20. Ubisoft took a gamble with Red Steel. What if the system tanked? And each developer that jumps on board has to deal with more and more competition. I think it was smart for other 3rd party developers to wait. But I am glad that Wii is poised to do well. More competition means higher quality experiences for gamers.

All i have it say is I have been picking up gamcube games like nobody's business. 60 bucks for 3 awesome games, games like Eternal Darkness and Lord of the Rings two towers. Yeah they're old, but they're damn good, and I play them as long or longer than you kids with 360s, no cash and no attention span. haha. Oh yeah and i'll be playing them on my wii. how's that backward compatibility goin?

Bloodoflamb- ""What is the launch going to look like? From what I hear there's not going to be much out there. Is this going to be the worst launch in history as far as games go? anyone have any good news on this? I hope so." Zelda: TP, MP3, Red Steel, Dragon Quest Swords, Wii Sports and a bevy of other games at launch. Project H.A.M.M.E.R., Disaster: Day of Crisis, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brothers: Brawl, Elebits, FF:CC, Excite Truck, Super Monkey Ball, WarioWare, Sonic: Wildfire, Call of Duty 3, within the first year (some of them possibly at launch)." you do realize that most the games on that list are for launch?

I'm also taking a wait and see approach with the Wii. If it's amazing, an early lack of games won't kill it. Nintendo is a master at starting slow and building up steam. With such a break from tradition, they have to expect consumers and game developers to be cautious... I know I am. I hope it's a success though, 3 booming consoles competing could usher in 5-7 years of really terrific console games. To me, that's the ideal.

well dont matter what Thestreet.com say i am stillh aveing alot of high hopes for the console, and its looks pretty damn good, also dont suspect the unexpected because we might look at the systemand think it will be awesome but sometimes we judge to early and we give awesome opinions to something that really isnt awesome. the wii is probably going to be a great console and will probably sell alot and alot of units, but we can never be to sure.

shasam712, You're talking about a PSP game. It cost significantly less to develop a PSP game than a major console game on a wii. A console game isn't really considered successful unless it sells a million copies ( and depending on the dev / marketing budget NOT profitable). Like I already said it's pure ignorance to say third party developers "are dumb" because they aren’t "making money" at the launch. Very rarely do third party games make a profit at a console launch because there just aren’t enough console owners at that point. It's much smarter to time your games release a year into a console life cycle when there are at least a few million consoles sold. This isn't an issue of likeing wii or nintendo it's an issue of third party developers being smart and looking out for themselves. The risk / reward doesnt' warrent early support.

Support will be there, but the reality is that a lot of early third-party Wii stuff is going to be porting from other versions with the addition of tack-on Wii controller features. A friend who play-tests for a big publisher tells me that some of the Wii motion-sensing gameplay being added to the title he's on are quite lame. He summed it up like this: "If I was going to teach my girlfriend how to play this game, she'd learn it about 10 times faster using the normal GC controller than with the nunchuck twists and remote shots. It's more awkward than neat. Even the testers prefer normal control." I think this is a valid point. Very few 3rd parties are going to 'get' the hardware like Nintendo, due to late exposure. So they're scurrying to convert controller elements to the motion sensing novelties and it's all half-baked.

Either way, most of nintendo's magic comes from their in-house games (eg zelda, mario, metroid etc etc). Who cares about third party games at launch? It will help in the long run tho! If more third party companies come in, it will help the longevity of the system.

HAH! Serves them right...if they didn't have the foresight to develop a game for the Wii launch then they don't deserve to capatalise on the popularity of the console, if it is popular that is. But this isn't bad news for us. Nintendos first party titles will be out and they will probably offer the best showing of the Wii's capabilities seen as they were developed in tandem with the console. Oh....and too messin18, I am a little late but....what planet are you on!?!?!? You don't have to sell a million copies of a game to make a profit, You can make a profit with much less games sold. For a game to be put into the greatest hits collection on the PSP it only has to sell...what was it....250,000 copies??? Something like that, and those game developers who made those games will have all made profits on them.

Geez, what's the big deal!? You know that as far as technology goes, this system is the FIRST in a whole new realm of gaming... If you don't have 50 titles to choose from as launch, go cry somewhere else... It's going to be a little while just for the companies to get a handle on the full potential / possibitlites of this machine... Whether you like it or not, NINTENDO is truly at the FOREFRONT of the gaming world as we know it! Big powerhouse graphics cards are only, scraping the surface... WOO-HOO for Wii!!!

What else is new? Because Nintendo came out in third-place overall for this generation (and neck-and neck w/ Xbox at most), of course third-parties would second-guess the schematics and the moniker of the new console. Now that Nintendo had a highly successful E3 showing publishers are now saying "Hey Iwata, hey Miyamoto, hey Reggie why didn't you tell us before? Darn, now it's too late to cash in on what will be a promising November string of Wii sales". Well whose fault is that? Blame it on third-party developers who dropped Gamecube support, blame Nintendo for misreading the market during Gamecube's lifespan and the size of the mini-DVDs, and blame the consumers who didn't purchase enough third-party exclusives when they had the chance. Xbox 360 is doing well, but until the first price drop, sales of the console will be only a steady stream. Playstation 3 is a GREAT piece of hardware, but in today's economy even the $500.00 model is priced too high for the casual audience. That leaves developers with littl chioce but to cash in on Wii's launch. To the third-party developers: stop whining and get to work on decent games for the launch. It may be too late for Christmas, but gamers will want newer games in January-March when we finish playing our launch/Christmas games.

Nintendo has really proved everyone wrong. Everyone thought Nintendo was out of buisness. GUESS WHAT! SONY is going out of buisness. They made some BONEHEADED moves with the PS3. Now, Nintendo moved into an early 1st place, and Sony into 3rd. YEAH NINTENDO!

I'll be one of the first to admit it...I hate the GC. I preordered the thing, and had it on launch day. Now it just sits there, watching me play on my 360. The one thing that will make this console worth the money, is if Nintendo gets their act together, and has a decent game come out more than every, ohhh...6 months? Everything coming out on the GC lately has been nothing but 3rd party titles based on the latest Anime/Nickelodeon/Child's toy franchise, with few of those being anything more than an interactive commercial.

rob3nelson: All the Nintendo fanboys will be playing Nintendo games this christmas. Big deal if we have to wait a few extra months to get some rubbish 3rd party games from EA. Atleast we will have the awesome inhouse Nintendo games to tide us over, erm like Zelda! Whereas the PS3 launch will be much like the 360, a halfbaked game for every genre to keep the simple minded mass happy till Halo/MGS/GTA comes out.
