Wii success = third-party woes?

After console's unexpected buzz from E3, TheStreet.com says game makers were caught unaware, will have few Wii games for holidays.

Nintendo may be able to pull off the ultimate "I told you so" this holiday season, after the Wii's surprise showing at E3 convinced publishers that its console was the real deal, says TheStreet.com's Troy Wolverton.

Even though publisher support for the innovative console has ramped up greatly since E3, many companies will miss reaping the benefits of the Wii's holiday launch.

An unnamed hedge fund manager told TheStreet.com that the only publisher poised for some Wii success early on is Ubisoft, which is unleashing the shooter/swordplay hybrid Red Steel. The other companies were "caught flat-footed," the source said.

After the GameCube placed a distant third in the current-gen console race, many publishers had all but written Nintendo off. "They weren't expecting anything," Simba Group analyst James Lin said.

At E3, many of the high-profile games showcased for the Wii were being developed in-house at Nintendo, while major third-party publishers seemingly approached the console with a "wait and see" attitude by offering up only a few games.

That attitude has since changed, with several publishers showing considerable interest in the console, most recently software giant Electronic Arts, which announced four new Wii games in development. Among the others jumping on the bandwiigon are Activision, which is bringing WWII to the Wii with Call of Duty 3, and THQ, which is rolling out its hit Cars for the console. Even 2K Sports, who repeatedly passed on putting titles on the GameCube, is getting in on the action.

"The reception this platform received at the E3 show ... is one that makes us take a real strong look at it," said Karl Winters of Take-Two Interactive, 2K Sports' parent label. Winters expects a 2K Sports baseball game on the console by late 2007 or 2008.

It may be too little, too late says Wolverton, who warns that "[third-party] companies will likely have [only a] few Wii games to offer this holiday as stocking stuffers."

As the Rock would say, "It doesn't matter that third party developers were too stupid to buy into the Wii before now!" That's their loss. Church...

This truly doesn't make a difference anyway. So we won't have a lot of 3rd party titles available this holiday period. Does anybody remember Microsoft's launch it had decent 3rd party support and most the games they had available at launch we're that great. However almost a year later Microsoft is having some quality titles ready to hit us around the holiday period. While Nintendo fans may have to wait another year for a bunch of 3rd party titles that isn't a bad thing. Nintendo should release Zelda on launch day, maybe Metroid and will release the next Mario game within 6 months. Honestly the last "Killer" launch game I remember was Mario 64 suggesting the quality titles roll in but it takes time.

Granted, Nintendo has tried some things that haven't worked in the past (Virtua Boy, U-Force, Power Glove), but I would have assumed that devs would have looked at the Wii as an extension of the DS mentality and commitment to innovation. Congrats to those who took a chance (even though Ubisoft did give in to conformity with Prince of Persia). To the others? Eh, if you are not interested in trying somthing new, you are probably putting out trash anyway.

This really is what nintendo has been missing in recent years 3rd party support. Hopefully it shines. More competition = better games for all.

Don't worry everyone. The DS had weak support when it first appeared too. But then after it proved to stomp any and all competition (and still does) the third parties finally jumped on board. Now there are so many good titles coming out for it, I can't even keep up. I just bought a DS lite (my first DS) and i'm having trouble playing all the games from the past year, now I have to catch up and play the new ones coming out too. I can't afford this. Maybe I should have bought a PSP, then I wouldn't have any good games to spend money on and I wouldn't be broke.

Actually since developing a game for wii costs about a quarter of what it costs for the other two systems, i see this system having fantastic 3rd Party support in the near future.

i can understand that. It is a risk and if i were a developer i would have waited it out at e3 too. Either way we are getting more 3rd party support, we just have to wait longer for them

There shouldn't be much problem at the Wii's launch. With Zelda and Metroid as launch titles, Nintendo won't really need third-party support for a little while.

The thing that I see as a big problem is will Nintendo have THEIR titles out soon enough? SSBB, MP:C, SM:G, if those come out before the holidays, then Nintendo will be fine

I don't think the devs and the publishers underestimated the Wii so much as the REACTION to the Wii. Hell, they probably knew more than we did pre-E3, except that info was buried under a NDA. They had everything they needed to make games for the Wii except the desire. The public reaction to the Wii coupled with the reaction to the PS3's pricing is probably what nobody expected, and is what is causing them problems now. Keep working on those PS3 games guys, but make a 360 version (spread those costs out). And get some Wii titles rolling in the meantime :) Going to be an interesting generation.

3rd party games skipped out on the Wii because the Wii is GaRbAgE! It is just a cheap gimmick that will get old really quick. It's great for little kids though, kids don't care about graphics or the type of games that will be showcased on the XBOX 360 and the PS3. Mario and Zelda have run their course for the older generation, now where playing GTA and God of War. 3rd party gamers had the right idea, good job. That just there has to be the dumbest thing I've read in a while.

The Wii was by far the hit of the show every non-biased person who follows the industry knows that. can't say I see the lack of 3rd party titles hurting the launch a bit since there are alot of good 1st party ones that will be there and Nintendo still by far rules in first party departemnt over the compition by a very large gap. As so-called no kiddy games,..well first the people that refer to Nintendo's games are themselves in almost all cases immature because, not to mention hardly real gamers since we know that having an adult theme doesn't make a game great and never really has. They can be great with or without and good sytme is best to have all kinds of games for all kinds of people. Can't really say how things will go this fall for sure but it is certainly looking to be a good year for the Big "N". MS had a nice showing at the E3,..but your wrong if you think the Wii's coming out on top was "sympatetic",...very wrong.

As I recall, same thing happened for N64. Developers said "what the hell do we do with this?" Then they saw Mario 64 and said "Oh. Right then." Many projects were thus scrapped pre-launch.

robEZ8: I'm not sure you understood the article. You're praising 3rd parties for doing the "right thing" by not developing for the Wii, when the article states that 3rd parties are sorry they didnt develop for it earlier... *rolls eyes*

As long as Third Parties are interested in the system, I'm happy. Plus, for a launch I only choose a couple games. If everyone released a game at launch, sure the selection would be better, but I would overlook and miss a lot of the games.

Ok journalists, stop with the wii play on words, it's not funny, it's not hip, it never was. This 3rd party support makes me really nervous. i mean, it does seem like it's too little too late for anything decent until mid-late 2007. What is the launch going to look like? From what I hear there's not going to be much out there. Is this going to be the worst launch in history as far as games go? anyone have any good news on this? I hope so.

Did I read that right? "bandwiigon" ?? Talk about stretching a pun. I thought most of those jokes had finally died. Third party supoort will be nice if the third party producers think beyond the bottom line and actually have the guts to invest in something new. But if the Wii does launch with Zelda: TP, well there's not much else to say except it will sell a ton! Give me that over the same old shooter/racer/sports clones any day. At least every Zelda game has multiple new mechanics and styles. I can only drive in a circle or shoot a bunch of zombies/aliens/Nazis so often before I'm bored out of my mind.

The "Buzz" from E3 2005 was that the Wii "won", but that Microsoft had the best outlook. I don't know how you win E3 and not have the best outlook. I think it was a sympathetic victory for Nintendo. Mario Galaxy is an average game. Zelda TP is the only game to care about and was crucial for the E3 "victory". The Wii is doing many "firsts" in the console world, but most of them are negatives. (ie, first to use old tech, first to release a game on an old system and simultaneously use it as a launch title, and first to eliminate the standard controller.)
