Wii U 2015 Report Card

Nintendo's Wii U has some fight left, but the bells are tolling.

As part of GameSpot’s Game of the Year 2015 series, throughout this week we will publish annual performance reviews of all home game platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and PC.

With Nintendo's new NX console on the horizon, you can't blame anyone for thinking Wii U is on its way out. It's not selling particularly well compared to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and new games have been few and far between. In truth, the story of Wii U in 2015 is more complicated than sales numbers. Below you’ll find a collection of headline observations that defined the console’s performance and evolution in 2015, followed by a final verdict for the year.

Now Playing: How did the Wii U do in 2015?

Super Mario Maker Gives Players the Keys to the Castle

Gaming as we know it was almost singlehandedly revived by Nintendo in the 1980s, and the company quickly achieved Disney-like status thanks to its memorable games and mascots. As it has done for years, Nintendo continued to dip into its well of icons in 2015 to satisfy the desires of its biggest supporters with new sequels and spinoffs. But more than any Wii U game in recent memory, Super Mario Maker sent a meaningful message to fans: this is for you.

Super Mario Maker isn't the first great Wii U game, but with near-universal appeal and easy-to-use tools, it's one of the best reasons to own a Wii U.

Like kids in a candy store, Wii U owners pounced on Super Mario Maker and quickly started crafting the 2D Mario levels of their dreams. In the weeks following Super Mario Maker's release, social media networks were flooded with posts from people sharing their favorite creations, and in a rare turn of events, people without a Wii U expressed genuine envy. Super Mario Maker isn't the first great Wii U game, but with near-universal appeal and easy-to-use tools, it's one of the best reasons to own a Wii U.

Nintendo Launches Splatoon and Reinvents Shooters

No Caption Provided

Nintendo has flirted with new characters and franchises over the past few years, but with Splatoon, it pulled no punches. Inklings, the game's human-squid hybrid characters, were plastered across all forms of media, and Nintendo confidently released a Splatoon Wii U console bundle on launch week: a bold move for an untested product.

Apparently Nintendo knew what it was doing all along. Splatoon was one of the best reviewed games of the year, and Wii U owners purchased 2.5 million copies in six months, making it the fifth best-selling game on the system (Nintendo Land excluded). It's a competitive shooter, but by trading bullets for ink, Nintendo opened the genre up to people who couldn't warm up to the violent and intimidating nature of games like Call of Duty or Titanfall. Splatoon overflowed with charm, redefined a genre, and cornered the hearts of a younger generation by tapping into youthful tastes and trends. All of a sudden, Splatoon made Wii U fresh.

A Steady Stream of DLC Keeps Old Wii U Hits Relevant

2014 was a big year for Wii U owners, with major releases such as Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Brothers, and Hyrule Warriors arriving on the scene. In 2015, Nintendo continued to support these games--and Splatoon, notably--with a flood of downloadable content, diving headlong into a practice it's historically ignored. While not all of Nintendo's DLC has been free, or a must-buy, it has been significant enough to keep people interested in games long past their release dates.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo nailed DLC on Wii U in 2015, extending the life of its most popular games without charging consumers an arm and a leg.

DLC is a divisive topic, but Nintendo's approach is far from nickle-and-diming its fan base. In the case of Splatoon, everything released post-launch is free. By everything, I mean: over 30 weapons, 8 stages, and 6 multiplayer modes. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U shipped with a huge cast of characters, but Nintendo continues to dish out more, at a very reasonable price of $4. For Mario Kart 8, it released 16 new tracks, 6 new characters, and 8 new vehicles. The grand total? $12. Nintendo nailed DLC on Wii U in 2015, extending the life of its most popular games without charging consumers an arm and a leg.

Amiibo Are Still Popular, Still Disappointingly Hard to Find

Many Nintendo fans had to import hard-to-find amiibo from Japan, where supply doesn't seem to be an issue.
Many Nintendo fans had to import hard-to-find amiibo from Japan, where supply doesn't seem to be an issue.

Nintendo is the undisputed king of fan service, and nothing represents its efforts better than amiibos. These well-made statuettes of characters from Nintendo's pantheon of personalities have proven to be a big draw for fans: over seven million amiibo have been sold in the US alone.

Unfortunately, due to exclusivity deals with retailers and incredible demand from fans, a large number of amiibo are becoming increasingly hard to come by. It's far too common for amiibo to sell out before they're released, and most fans have to resort to paying well-above retail prices in order to secure their toy of choice on second hand markets--which are typically fueled by resellers looking to make a profit.

Whatever the cause, fans are audibly frustrated that Nintendo is pushing amiibo so hard while at the same time failing to make them easy to acquire. Most new Wii U games made or published by Nintendo feature some kind of amiibo functionality, and while very few of these games have made amiibo an essential purchase, they are characterized as an important part of the Wii U experience. Nintendo clearly loves amiibo and how well they are selling, but in 2015, it failed to make amiibo fun for Wii U owners.

Two of the Year's Biggest Wii U Games Slip to 2016

At E3 2014, Nintendo stole fans' hearts by announcing new Star Fox and Zelda games coming to Wii U in 2015. Star Fox is a beloved series that Nintendo infrequently revisits, so the announcement of a new game was a pleasant surprise. And then there's the new Zelda: a cel-shaded, open-world epic, and the follow-up to the divisive Wii game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Star Fox may only have niche appeal among Nintendo's fanbase, but when a new Zelda game comes out, everyone pays attention. It's one of Nintendo's golden-children, and the first trailer for the new Wii U game didn't disappoint. With sweeping landscapes that stretched to the horizon, and an exciting battle between a fresh-faced Link and a big, energetic monster, fans were hypnotized once again.

Unfortunately for Wii U owners, hopes of playing either game in 2015 were eventually dashed. In March, Nintendo announced that Zelda was pushed back to 2016 in order to realize "several new possibilities" for the game. Star Fox, initially intended to release this past November, was pushed to Q1 2016 so that Nintendo could refine the game's use of the GamePad and improve things like cutscenes and level design. Nintendo has said in the past that it would rather delay a game to improve it than rush one out the door before it's ready. It's hard to argue with that logic, but Wii U owners expected a new Zelda and a new Star Fox in 2015 and were ultimately let down.

It was fun while it lasted.
It was fun while it lasted.

Club Nintendo Shuts Down

For years, Nintendo offered incentives to fans in the form of Club Nintendo points. Every game or system sold included a code that could be registered to a profile, and when enough points were accumulated, they could be traded in for free games, accessories, and other Nintendo goodies. By hitting certain thresholds, some people attained gold or platinum status, and access to exclusive offers in turn.

In a move to streamline its online, cross-platform ecosystem, Nintendo decided that Club Nintendo had to go. Between June and September, Nintendo shutdown its rewards program across the globe, promising that it would be replaced with something similar down the road.

Nintendo is undoubtedly in a state of flux, but in 2015, Club Nintendo is an example of how this transition had a negative impact on Wii U owners, who lost a unique opportunity to have their loyalty rewarded with exclusive games and gear. It's not surprising that Nintendo needs to update its dated account system, but it's disappointing that it couldn't have made the transition without disrupting a beloved service like Club Nintendo in the process.

Verdict

Nintendo is unique among console manufacturers in that it lives and dies by its ability to produce its own games and keep fans, young and old, enraptured with series the like of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. To its credit, Nintendo did an amazing job of giving fans what they wanted in the form of DLC, breathing new life into months old games at little-to-no cost.

For a console to stay afloat, however, it needs a steady flow of new games, and while there were some amazing games for Wii U released in 2015, three or four hits over a twelve-month period isn't enough. Similarly, Nintendo's inability to supply enough amiibo to meet fan demand, and the shuttering of Club Nintendo, left Nintendo fans and Wii U owners deprived in small but meaningful ways. It should have been an amazing year for Wii U, but 2015 proved, once again, that the system could only be loved by someone with the passion and patience to cope with Nintendo's unpredictable whims during a period of transition.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo managed to keep Wii U afloat in 2015, but it couldn't elevate it to greatness, despite releasing a handful of incredible games.

The GoodThe Bad
  • Great DLC made 2014's best Wii U games relevant again.

  • Nintendo created an innovate shooter in Splatoon, redefining the genre and itself in the process.

  • Super Mario Maker captured the minds and hearts of the gaming community at large.

  • Amiibo shortages put a dent in Nintendo's relationship with its fans.

  • Delayed games thinned an already anemic release calendar.

  • Club Nintendo closed without a viable replacement.

As A long time Nintendo fan, the Wii U failed this generation. Anemic 3rd party support, Exclusives take too long to be released and not having the ability to use 2 tablets. I would love to see Mario go in a new direction such as Super Mario RPG. No new Zelda or Metroid. I wonder why Nintendo can't revive its old properties such as Kid Icarus. I love Nintendo and they are what made me fall in love with games. To me the SNES was its best console and they need to revisit what made it great and apply that to the NX.

I'll be entirely honest even if to some what i say will sound like nonsense, it is 100% bull when you guys say (gamespot staff) that the games are coming out not just at the end of the year but also "at the end of the Wii U's life span", the only reason this is true is because all journalists are saying the same unrealistic bull, you think Nintendo and their investors don't care at all about gaming journalism? You have been saying the same thing for a long time with every breath you draw and now Nintendo rushes their next gen console, gee i wonder if there is a connection there. *puts on thinking cap*

The people who are influenced by your views and claims are not just gamers, its also the companies you speak about, when things are in a grey area like right now with the Wii U still not catching up with all those years of not selling, its unconservative reviews like these that put the last nail in the coffin for a console, just how do you think the investors react when they hear everyone involved in some sort of gaming journalism is saying "yeah its over for the Wii U, i wonder if Nintendo will jump boat over to their next console"

I know, I'm exaggerating, and it sounds crazy, but does it really? Wii U isn't doing great, everyone knows that, why remark it, i think you guys (gaming journalists, not just gamespot) are not aware of the full weight of your reviews.

You guys are like Yelpers in South Park's "You're not Yelping", its a different industry than it was 10 or 20 years ago, now every company in the gaming industry is teeming with investors that expect the developers to add microtransactions to single player games like Ubisoft with AC and Konami with MGS, season passes, day1dlc, and now even episodic releases..... the companies that own the IPs and their investors are now simply expecting a bigger return than they were before. So i wonder how do they push to get their money when all the voices won't stop saying the Wii U is sinking...

Just put two and two together, you guys pushed Nintendo to release a new console earlier before their competitors.

Nintendo isn't desperate because Wii U didn't sell, Nintendo is desperate because all everyone in gaming journalism is doing is repeating articles about how bad the Wii U sold until now.

The Wii U is an awesome console with great exclusive games...the Wii tablet is perhaps the best controller ever invented...it makes multiplayer games during local play amazing...no shared screen, no split screen...its like playing online with a person in the same room as you...the joint is vicious...

The graphics aren't PS4 or XBOX1 level but they are far from horrible and they're lack of 3rd party support is disappointing....only because it's great to experience as many games through a system that you possibly can...

Still...what the Wii U lacks in graphics and 3rd party support, they make up with a solid 1st party library and exclusives, unique controller, great local play multiplayer, DLC, backward capability, if you do have kids they have great rated everyone games as well as mature outlets for grown ups....

I mean seriously...all the systems are awesome and each contribute different gaming experiences to the market...PS has a stacked library with great games, saturated with 3rd party support, Xbox has the best online gaming experiences ever...for a fee...but it works amazingly well....and my favorite Nintendo...is a first party monster with gaming system that centers around great local play experiences with friends and family...the way they make their system always capable of using their old systems controllers, games, etc is just devine...everyone enjoy...its a great to be a gamer...

I knew trolls would be in here venting their frustration and jealously for the Wii U. Just buy a Wii U and stop bitching about the PSWhore's online shutting down and only having one good game to play.

@black_attack: Nintendo has close to 40 full fledged games and many indies for the Wii U. Most of the full fledged games are ports from previously released titles, and there are only about 5 or 6 exclusives worth your money, after 3 years on store shelves. If you already own a Wii, or don't care much for the titles on Virtual Console, there is very little reason to recommend a Wii U, and this is coming from a guy who owns a Wii U and very much wants Nintendo to succeed.

I'm really curious what Nintendo is doing these days. I seem to recall they were a bit more "guns blazing" back in the days of Gamecube than they are now with Wii U -- when they really need it. I'm sure they're a bigger company now than they were in the Gamecube days, so they must be hard at work on something...

@Princess_Rectum: The NX. Nintendo has so much talent and a keen eye for making fun games. It really should focus on new IP and farm out their successful franchises to talented developers, we could at least get a new Zelda, Mario, Pikmin every 2 years and whatever else Nintendo dreams up. Sad to say, but, Nintendo may eventually cease making consoles because of how the business is run overseas.

@Princess_Rectum: Well, there is a new console manufactured by Nintendo that is set to be announced and even possibly launch next year. Nintendo has actually gone on record to say that they would keep supporting old hardware despite new hardware shipping and doing the complete opposite. What they really mean is that there are still a few games being developped internally and elsewhere that will release on Wii U after the NX launches. It will be interesting to see, they may have a console like product that is completely completely unique... If so, I'm betting it's built from the ground up to be a toys to life platform, to compete against Disney infinity and Activision's Skylanders.

@consolehaven: They've tried this before and got burnt badly. Although, lately they've been using outside developers for creating specific in game resources. I suppose if enough trust and oversight is built up in one of these developers we could see them being used for full games.

Can you imagine the sales Nintendo would have gotten had Super Mario 3D World, DK Tropical Freeze,Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Yoshi's Woolly World, and Smash Bros. released on PS3,PS4,Xbox 360 and Xbox One? They would have been swimming in cash. I know they are hardheaded and will keep making consoles.

@creepshow2: They may be taking cues from Sega who slipped into obscurity when they did the same. Also, Nintendo designs their consoles and peripherals around whatever games Miyamoto and teams are developing. The Wii Mote is, in my opinion, the best controller on the market, and it never would've existed if Nintendo had thrown in the towel after Gamecube.

Profit margins for 1st party games >>>>> 3rd party games. Also look at the best selling games of those platforms, clearly most users of those systems could give 2 shits about anything bright and colorful that doesn't stick a gun in your hand.

Nintendo has already been swimming in cash and will continue to swim in cash. Just because people like you know nothing about how business works in the gaming industry doesn't mean that companies like Nintendo are hardheaded.

@creepshow2: well those titles you listed would be their exclusives. the idea would have been to make a more powerful console and get 3rd parties to make GTA 5, Fallout 4, Metal Gear, Dark Souls, BattleFront, etc for the WiiU. reggie is a fukin moron, hoping Iwata's replacement does a good job with the NX. without 3rd party support Nintendo will always struggle though, but i feel they will address that with the NX (hoping). IMO WiiU is a good second console, just too many good 3rd party titles out there to limit yourself to cartoon games (most wiiU titles are cartoons). i have all three consoles and a PC. hoping nintendo can bridge the 3rd party gap with the NX.

Look there will be Star Fox and Zelda on Wii U. I am sure they will also be on NX with more bells and whistles and possibly a bit better graphics. That being said Nintendo already reiterated many times that they were going to continue supporting the Wii U after NX launches, for how long after is the big question. I personally love my Wii U and especially the Gamepad. My only gripe with the gamepad has been the relatively weak distance signal it has. I would have loved for a 3rd party to have made a wi/fi or blue tooth range extender whatever it uses. That being said I am ready for NX and will get one. PS4 has a similar use with the Vita used like the gamepad with the PS4. Tempted to by a Vita just for that!

I had to look it up, because I don't remember Splatoon being "one of the best reviewed games of the year." Sure enough, it got 8's and 8.5's. Maybe the content added post launched raised some opinions, but that's hardly "best multiplayer" game of the year. ugh.

The Wii U is a great console and well worth getting if one of two things is true about you, either you have a PC/PS4/Xone or you have limited game playing time. I would guess that the only reason it didn't do better was down to its image from release and with the third party companies abandoning it so early on being devastating to any hope of a comeback - it was unfortunate that most the games pushed out by EA, Activision and the like were games that had already appeared elsewhere months ago.

Despite everything that went wrong with the console I will still look back on it with the same fondness I do for the Dreamcast and the Gamecube. Given Nintendo's recent experiments with DLC and free to play games I worry that the Wii U may be the last machine to put the gamer first and that the NX will be homogenised to be another Sony/MS console, but we shall see.

Agree with just about everything written here. I should say that I'm fairly certain it will wind up being my favorite console of this gen (though admittedly I only have the ps4 outside of the wii u) simply by virtue of it being unique and memorable (my ps4 and pc experience blur together in my memories at times). It's really been a lot of fun, and while the software has been scarce that which released has often been wonderful.

I have a feeling this will be a console that's looked on with more respect once time has passed, much like the gamecube or the dreamcast. With the lack of third party support and terrible marketing, though, nintendo can only blame themselves...

What's frustrating is even as late as this year there was an army of fans on YouTube just dying to provide free promotion for Splatoon, Mario Maker and other games that might have moved a few more consoles, but even in the console's failed twilight years Nintendo is shutting them down. It's as if they look at the practices that are working for Sony and Microsoft and decide to do precisely the opposite of that.

That said, being that this is a year end review I should finish with the biggest nintendo event of the year... RIP Iwata, thanks for all the wonderful games and for bringing nintendo to such heights that it's safe for years to come. :)

No mention of Xenoblade Chronicles X? Alongside Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, its one of the best Wii U releases of the year. Anyway, with the NX on the horizon, there's going to a lot more focus on the new console at the next E3 than the Wii U, but I hope Zelda and Star Fox definitely make it to the console in 2016 to end it a high-note.
