Wii U Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and 3D Mario all in next Nintendo Direct

The next Nintendo Direct will take place before E3 starts on June 11.

Nintendo has said on Twitter that its next Nintendo Direct will feature a look at Wii U versions of Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and the new 3D Mario title in the works at the Japanese publisher.

No Caption Provided

The Nintendo of America Twitter account wrote, "#IwataSays We will discuss new Smash Bros., 3D Mario game, Mario Kart and other Wii U titles in our #NintendoDirectNA before the start of E3."

Nintendo said in January that Nintendo EAD Tokyo, the team that made Mario Galaxy, Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario 3D Land, will be in charge of the new 3D Mario.

The new Smash Bros, meanwhile, is being developed by Namco Bandai.

No date has been given for the next Nintendo Direct. E3 2013 runs from June 11 through June 13.

Nintendo has opted out of a large-scale E3 press conference this year, saying it will instead focus its efforts elsewhere.

Last week's Nintendo Direct featured the publisher announcing a three-game exclusive Sonic partnership with Sega, a release date for New Super Luigi U, and new details about Pikmin 3.

people saying "this again?" and "same recycled stuff" need to go back to their broken xbox. the reason most got the WiiU was to play at least one of those 3 games when they came out. They have been consistently fun and I am super excited to see what they are going to look like at their next Nintendo direct.

More ignorant failures on the haters.

Nintendo is indeed milking their cash cow at an extreme level. But why do they milk it? Because they get money for it. How do they get money for it? People buy it. Why do people buy it? Because they want it.

Look at that and say Nintendo isn't doing something logical.

@craigprime It's like that for every popular game though. Look at CoD, people hate that game to death, but it makes money and people buy the game.

At the end of the day, if it sells, developers will continue to bring out more entries, regardless of how many people bad mouth it. EVERY major developer has at least 2-3 franchises that they consistently make games for. At least with Nintendo, you can be sure that each new entry of most of their franchises will be something very different from the last, that will exist alongside previous entries, not overshadow them.

More of the same, they should just make publishing deals with Steam, Microsoft and Sony and drop hardware making, they're basically just relying on their own stuff all over again.

@Daian Are you crazy? Another believer that great developers should only be publishers. Why don't you '...pull a Sega' and we'll see how long you survive.

@Celsius765 @Redsyrup @Daian I doubt they will. They're struggling now from a bad console launch, but they turned the ship around with 3DS, and if they make good on releasing games this holiday, I see no reason to think they can't turn the Wii U around.

And people like Daian seem to forget that Sega hadn't been a profitable company in the decade prior to going 3rd party, having squandered the fortunes that the Genesis earned them on the Sega CD, 32X and Saturn. They poisoned their brand name in hardware. Nintendo has yet to do that.

Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Mario 3D... how original, not only are they a generation behind from XBox and PS3, but they just release the same games over and over. I used to love Nintendo, but now I'm quite sick of it. Wonder how long can they keep up with this.

@zeusbark

Were you thinking the same exact thing during their January Nintendo Direct where they basically showed off several different games? It's okay, you (like many others) have convinced yourself that Nintendo only releases the same games, so that whenever something new or different comes out from them, regardless of how amazing it is, you'll just ignore it and continue to focus on their primary franchises.

@Yondaro I fail to see how it's that big of a deal when an established character makes appearances on an array of titles that span various genres. The only thing unoriginal about that concept is the character itself. I say better to have a multitude of gameplay choices that all contain the same character, than to have an overwhelming selection of games that are identical, save for their revolving door of forgettable avatars.

@Drkirk08 @Reality_Now @Strider8009 @breathnac Halo, GOW and COD don't have Tennis and volley ball games. Lmao. Nor do they have Halo Party 6, Doctor of Duty (doctor Mario) and GOW: Power Tennis of Doom. They do Milk COD like Disney did Mickey, but Mario takes the cake. Mario is actually more well known then Mickey Mouse cause he's been whored out.

Not that I dislike Mario, cause I find the Mario and Luigi games great, but they do over do it a bit. People complain about COD every year. Mario is released monthly like Android phones.

@Drkirk08 @Reality_Now @Strider8009 @breathnac You don't look hard enough then, CoD has a good share of haters and some with Halo. People that pick on Mario are just more open about it.

@Reality_Now @Strider8009 @breathnac I like the fact Mario gets ridiculed and such but not Halo, COD, GOW for the same thing. And if you say that it's because they sell or people want more of this or that...then don't ya think Nintendo has the same idea? That's the reality buddy. Don't deny it.

Nintendo needs some more variety. The thing is, the people that actually cared about Mario are the ones over the age of 20, who played the NES. Now, Mario is directed towards young kids and they don't understand that the demographic who actually liked Mario is gone.

Nintendo needs to realize that they have to use Mario's name sparingly and make games that everybody can enjoy. Get rid of the tablets and wiimotes and make normal games.

Only reason I would buy a Wii U would be for SSB and Zelda.

@kente10 "Kiddie" is such a vague argument. As a fan of platformers, I grew up with Mario and I still enjoy 3D Mario games (2D not as much, but they're still fun). Its lighthearted nature is mainly geared towards kids but there's no denying they are still one of the better platformers around.

@thetravman @kente10 I hate when people refer to Mario games as "kiddie." That implies that one's ability to enjoy them vanishes when they mature. Sorry, but unless you're some man-child and/or teenager screaming racist epithets to look "grown up," you can enjoy quality games no matter how bright and cheerful they look.

Just really getting tired of these rehashes of the same thing on every new Nintendo console that comes out. Geez, at least they could get rid of the "Mario" name out of it and dress it up differently like any of Gameloft games that are currently out.

Not trying to hate on Nintendo here, but not only are they milking Mario again, their milking Sega's old mascot as well. This is why I haven't owned a Nintendo console in a long time. The games are still good, but a little variety goes a long way.

@canuckbiker They JUST went exclusive with Sega.

HOW THE **** is that milking?!

I swear I don't understand all this bullshit hate towards nintendo. THEY DON'T MILK FRANCHISES. A milked franchise is a franchise that gets shit out every year with little to no gameplay changes and a new coating of paint.

Nintendo DO NOT do this.

****, I seriously don't understand why people hate on nintendo more than other developers (EA, Activision) and for milking! Of all things!

Nintendo are like one of the only companies left that are trying to actively **** their consumers in the ass.

Bloody hell.

@canuckbiker If Nintendo took Mario out and made a new mascot while still maintaining the same gameplay i can almost guarantee it wouldn't sell as well. He's been around for so long most people who he is, the 3D games still are always good so personally i don't think it matters if you have fun.

There is also the Wonderful 101, Pikmin, Xenoblades 2, Retros secret project, Bayonetta 2 with others on the way if you don't want Mario.

@HonorOfGod @Mimorpg @canuckbiker No, Mario was created to be marketable across genres, which would not make him a part of the problem. Without Mario, no standard would have ever been set for platforming (2d and 3d), cart racing, etc. The problem is Nintendo is having to use him more and more to make up for lack of unique 3rd party support.
