Officially, Microsoft has said that Windows 10--the company's next operating system--will launch sometime this summer. But now, a more specific release window has emerged by way of comments from AMD president and CEO Lisa Su.

No Caption Provided

As part of a wider response to an analyst's question about channel inventory, Su said during a recent earnings call (via The Verge) that Windows 10 will arrive at the end of July.

"What we also are factoring in is, with the Windows 10 launch at the end of July, we're watching the impact of that on the back-to-school season and expect that it might have a bit of a delay to the normal back-to-school season inventory build-up," she said.

Of course, Su's comments might not be accurate. But, as The Verge notes, AMD--a major worldwide force in the PC space--is likely well-informed regarding Microsoft's rollout plans for the new operating system.

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, “Microsoft has said Windows 10 will launch this summer. We have nothing additional to share."

Windows 10 features a new Xbox gaming app, which will not require Xbox Live Gold. Meanwhile, another marquee gaming feature for Windows 10 is that it will allow Xbox One games to stream to PCs and tabletsrunning the new OS. In addition, Windows 10 supports cross-platform play, starting with Fable Legends.

Predecessor Windows 8, released in October 2012, was controversial in that it introduced a touch-focused tile design that was markedly different to Windows 7. Microsoft addressed these criticisms with frequent--and substantial updates--including Windows 8.1.

The company isn't starting over with Windows 10, but Microsoft appears to be taking a more traditional approach with the new OS.

"We believe that, together with the feedback you provide us, we can build a product that all of our customers will love," Windows executive Terry Myerson said last year. "It will be our most open collaborate OS projects ever."

@realone2005: Well, Halo 1 and 2 didn't come to PC until after the 360 came out, and there's still no word on whether 3, 4 and the others will follow suit; if they do decide to release 5 and 6 on the PC it probably won't be for several years, certainly not until well after the next system (XBOX Two?) comes out. Unless of course something happens to cause Microsoft to completely change their business model, but that seems unlikely.

well, just spent an hour trying to install it. kept looping on the internet connection screen. I would enter the network info, then windows would ask you to go through some setting options. it would test for the internet connection, then it restarts the computer, and goes back into the internet screen to start all over again.

Im not sure why it doesnt just connect to the internet after i set it up. but instead waits for you to go threw settings then tries to connect.

Im also not sure why in 2015 a "tech preview" from a company that made its name in OS's would be so awful.

We are in desperate need of some competition here.

@deth420: It's a tech preview - there's all sorts of things that aren't in yet. Lots of drivers aren't around yet, either. It's not meant for actual use yet.

@Zloth2@deth420: No one even understands what a "Beta access" game is anymore. Every single one I am in is loaded with constant complaints and rants about bugs and missing features.

Used windows 10 for a while in a virtual machine. Its much better than Windows 8, I think. There is nothing exciting about it though.

@bfa1509: I really don't see what all the hate against windows 8 was, I had serious reservations against upgrading from 7 for ages because of the amount of complaining being done about it. Been using 8 now for 6 months and its grand once you've got use to it, if anything it feels much smoother, faster

@UltimateBastard@bfa1509: Windows 7 was great, but windows 8 with the metro stuff added to it does not make sense and it was useless...unless you have a touch screen, tablet or know your way around with shortcuts keys. it was worst when you have a laptop and have to use the touchpad because every corner calls an action so you have to be careful...and many people dont even know how to remove this actions. Windows 8.1 was a fix for many of this problems. Windows 10 as i see it is just a huge patch with "day one remove widgets" what im happy about is that they at least change the icons to something more modern not same windows millenium icons.

The more I hear about this new platform the more excited I am about it. I'm glad they went to a completely unified platform.

@rasterror: Completely unified platform... it would mean to play Xbox games on a PC...sadly, it is just a streaming functionality, like we already have... with some mods and tweaks... If they really want to unify, they should start thinking about getting such universes as more open they can... Windows only reached because it was more open than Mac OSX, back in the days..and Windows will never win the Android market because Google is simply doing what MS did many years ago... to not care about the hardware, but simply, to focus only in the software...

@Gamod@rasterror: you won't see Xbox games play on PC. I know, it's truly awful that Microsoft probably wants to sell Xbox consoles, but the unity between all platforms should open things up for developers, which I'm sure is the aim for MS here. A streaming of the PC to Xbox would be a great addition and they are looking to bring that, which could stand against Steam machines and the like since you'd essentially be able to play all of your PC and Xbox One games on Xbox. Allowing developers to create one app/game that runs on all platforms is truly the work of a unified OS. However, there is always one of you that has to find something to b1tch about.

@cvantu@Gamod@rasterror: Also microsoft wont stand a chance to compete with Steam and the lower prices. If he do he will crash the console market. There is a xbox game store in the metro chimera windows 8 app store with xbox games logo. Most of them are on android/ios some are just link to the publisher website.

They should let us play xbox games on the PC with cross platform multi-player. Now that would be revolutionary.

Streaming from PC to Xbox would be more beneficial to MS as I'm sure they want to sell consoles

Meh, I tried windows 10 latest preview in a virtual machine. It is okay. I still like windows 7 better. Probably will take the free upgrade and keep it in a VM then run windows 7 till 2020 end of support date, then will go to zorin.

I just really dislike the direction microsoft in general has been going.

@cvantu:

Then you must not have the latest update.

The control panel is being swapped to a full screen tablet like interface, pc settings. They have 2 different settings in 2 different areas and that makes no sense at all. Instead of having one universal place to do everything its all mixed and you have to hunt down the setting your looking for.

The fact it still looks like something from the 90's with the ugliest icons and layout I have ever seen, combined with the microsoft junk store and apps and all that other crap thrown in. Yes I know you can remove it and customize it and all that. It is just my opinion and annoyance with it.

Just like 8, It is a good OS underneath all that crappy weird visual and design changes.

Again, my opinion.

@129260@cvantu: Did you, you know, try turning tablet mode off?

Also, they are CONSTANTLY updating where things are in control panel right now. Legitimately, every single update has completely changed how it's worked.

As someone with a roll-your-own Linux box, the idea that you want to go to something as stupid as Zorin is hilarious. "Hey, I want something that loses out on the power of Linux, while losing all the compatibility and gaming of Windows! I just love the worst of every world!"

@129260@cvantu: I have the latest build released (10049), but I guess I just don't care about stupid sh1t like that. I think I've only had to open the control panel once. Also, the OS is unfinished, and something like icons could be a later part of the build for the OS. I normally just access my PC settings through the notification tab, which I find quite easy and efficient to get to. Overall, I like the OS, and it feels pretty complete since we are still several months away from release.
