Officially, Microsoft has said that Windows 10--the company's next operating system--will launch sometime this summer. But now, a more specific release window has emerged by way of comments from AMD president and CEO Lisa Su.

As part of a wider response to an analyst's question about channel inventory, Su said during a recent earnings call (via The Verge) that Windows 10 will arrive at the end of July.

"What we also are factoring in is, with the Windows 10 launch at the end of July, we're watching the impact of that on the back-to-school season and expect that it might have a bit of a delay to the normal back-to-school season inventory build-up," she said.

Of course, Su's comments might not be accurate. But, as The Verge notes, AMD--a major worldwide force in the PC space--is likely well-informed regarding Microsoft's rollout plans for the new operating system.

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, “Microsoft has said Windows 10 will launch this summer. We have nothing additional to share."

Windows 10 features a new Xbox gaming app, which will not require Xbox Live Gold. Meanwhile, another marquee gaming feature for Windows 10 is that it will allow Xbox One games to stream to PCs and tabletsrunning the new OS. In addition, Windows 10 supports cross-platform play, starting with Fable Legends.

Predecessor Windows 8, released in October 2012, was controversial in that it introduced a touch-focused tile design that was markedly different to Windows 7. Microsoft addressed these criticisms with frequent--and substantial updates--including Windows 8.1.

The company isn't starting over with Windows 10, but Microsoft appears to be taking a more traditional approach with the new OS.

"We believe that, together with the feedback you provide us, we can build a product that all of our customers will love," Windows executive Terry Myerson said last year. "It will be our most open collaborate OS projects ever."

People need to get with the times and upgrade. I still get customers coming in with systems running Windows XP because they don't want to get used to newer OS. And they wonder why they get viruses or web pages don't display properly in IE. Maybe because you are running an ancient browser and an insecure OS?

Yeah Windows 7 was great. But, Windows 8 runs much faster. Just install Classic Shell if the UI bothers you that much. Same for Windows 10. You have to get used to a new OS sooner or later.

@alaannn@bdrtfm: That's true. But just because somebody likes their ancient OS, doesn't mean companies need to continue to support it.

@alaannn@bdrtfm: If there are people still using XP, then that in itself is an issue.

Considering it is no longer supported whatsoever by Microsoft, it's no longer being updated and as a result is going to end up with a bottomless well of security back doors.

That, and just sticking with the older OS is not a good idea in the long run, because it will ultimately end up unsupported and obsolete. Hell, Windows 7 is on the verge of obsolescence with Windows 8.1's faster booting and improved features.

I'm sure Windows 10 will be a good OS.

@alaannn@DanielL5583@alaannn: If you can't find stuff?

In everything on WinMin (the architectural concept behind Vista+) you simply... open the start menu and type whatever you need. Or something close.

Yes, it's add/remove Programs. But if you type "uninstall?" It automatically adds "Uninstall a Program" to the list. Everything's freaking tagged and in obvious places. The problem is that users are stupid.

@bdrtfm: If it doesn't have at least the same level of customisation as Windows 7 then I don't see the point. Their focus on unifying the operating system with mobile devices while sidelining the tablet API makes the whole thing really inconsistent, resulting in a severe lack or obfuscation of settings for PC users.

@pongley: because it runs using less resources, is more efficient. takes up less system resources while gaming.

there is no search bar because you don't need one. you just type from anywhere in the start screen and your search is already running.

most of Windows 8.1 is better but a few changes are just an annoyance. some of the PC settings have to be accessed through charms\metro screen and are not accessible through Control Panel. the folders are not customizable anymore: border width and other sizing and font options are gone from Explorer. etc...

mostly it is a better running and looking OS than 7 but I'm glad 10 is already coming out and MS has addressed much of the bigger problems\complaints.

@pongley@bdrtfm: Like anything else, its just a matter of getting used to. And the longer you go without upgrading, the harder it will be to make adjustments. People who jump from Windows XP to windows 10 are going to be completely lost because they skipped Vista, 7 and 8.

I disliked 8 immensely at first. Both using it and working on it for customers. Now I find it no different than working on any other Windows OS. People dislike change but, change is inevitable.

@bdrtfm@pongley: It's nothing to do with liking the style, I can't access things I want to. The file search is gone from the start menu, nor can you put menus on the right side of the start menu like you could in every other version. You can't even disable the network adapter.

@pongley@bdrtfm: Literally every single command in Windows 7 that you ever used (unless you're a network administrator) is still there.

The only way "the search is gone" is if you were stupid enough to click start, click in the box, then start typing. Heads up, bro, pressing the Windows key then typing has worked since... Vista.

Freakin' mouse newbs.

@pongley@bdrtfm: Everything is still there. Run commands and shortcuts are still working as usual. Power users have the least amount of difficulty because anything you want to do can be done easier with run commands or shortcut keys than they can with point and click.

You want to disable the network adapter? Right click on your network icon, choose Open network and sharking center, click on Change adapter settings and there you go. Right click on your adapter and click disable.

Just because you personally can't find a way to do something does not mean it can't be done.

I still have a separate hdd running the W10 Tech Preview that I use more than W7 and have to say I love it. Can't wait for the official release. Kudos for MS giving it away for nothing as well.

Hmm, I will upgrade one of my systems (probably my Windows 8.1 laptop as I really dislike the OS) and see how it turns out before I update my gaming machine and workhorse.

Will definitely wait and see what early adopters have to say. Nice to see it's just around the corner though. I've used Server 2012 for a couple of months now (for learning purposes, not production) and I still find the Metro interface to be utterly annoying and counter-intuitive to use.

This is a pretty pivotal release for MS as we can (and have) lived with skipping an entire OS cycle. We've yet to experience skipping 2 entire cycles though.

@jinzo9988: Same here. I might wait to see if someone comes up with a theme mod to remove that daft tile thing from the start menu UI.

@pongley@jinzo9988: Yeah, I'm not a fan of that look but I think it's something that would grow on me over time. I thought they should've expanded on their "Gadgets" functionality (or widgets in Android if you prefer) over replacing the entire desktop with the Metro UI. It's a shame that never really took off and it's a shame that it also seems to either be gone entirely from Windows 10 or understated to the point of obscurity... especially now that they've done what Linux distros have been doing for years with multiple desktops (maybe Macs started this feature? I'm not too familiar with Macs).

@jinzo9988@pongley: The desktop wasn't replaced with Modern. Metro UI was also a part of Microsoft products since... Encarta '95. Microsoft assumed users weren't too stupid to make the connection between the dozens of programs that they'd used for 20 years and a new product using the old interface. Terrible mistake.

Always assume your users are stupid. Because they are.
