Wonder Woman 3 Is Being Fast-Tracked After Impressive Box Office For WW84

Wonder Woman 1984 opened to the highest box office since the pandemic began.

While the bar for a successful theatrical release isn't high in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 has cleared it, reporting a box office of $16.7 million over its three-day Christmas opening weekend according to a press release. This figure is the best any movie has reported since the pandemic began, beating out Tenet and The Croods: A New Age's COVID-affected openings.

While the numbers would be disappointing in a normal year, Wonder Woman 1984 has done better than expected given the circumstances. It currently boasts a total box office of $85 million, with $68.3 million of that coming from outside the USA. And because of this, Wonder Woman 3 is being fast-tracked.

Now Playing: Wonder Woman 1984 Review: Even Better Than The Original

"As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able continue her story with our real life Wonder Women--Gal and Patty--who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy," said Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Wonder Woman 1984 was the first of Warner Bros' movies to release simultaneous in theatres and on HBO Max, as the company will do with all its film releases in 2021. Warner Media revealed that over half of HBO Max's subscribers viewed Wonder Woman 1984 on the day it dropped, though the company hasn't said if the release led to increased numbers of new subscribers to the platform. Not all Americans have had the chance to see Wonder Woman in theaters, with over half of the country's theaters still closed due to the pandemic.

Wonder Woman 1984 has received a mixed bag of positive and negative reviews (GameSpot's was one of the former, with a score of 9/10), resulting in an ambivalent score of 59 on Metacritic. Gal Gadot is attached for the next installment, with Patty Jenkins returning to write and direct. The next film may be a while off, however, with Jenkins already attached to an upcoming Star Wars Rogue Squadron movie with Disney.

Just watched the movie. It was really bad......unbearably bad. Gadot and Pedro had some good acting performances especially when the script allows them to be emotional, but the CGI was downright awful, the fights are so cheesey and campy they just felt completely out of place. Cheetah had one fight. Yes, one, and it's another dark CGI mess. The 1980s premise is just a gimmick.Story is extremely cliche, climatic confrontation is non-existent (WW literally won by talking down the villain).

This just proved that the first WW was just a fluke. This movie may very well be the most incoherent and boring superhero movie from DC yet, yes even worse than Suicide Squad.

@Hardcoreehb: Suicide Squad was bad, but at least it was dumb entertainment. WW84 is not entertaining at all..........it had some glimpses of entertainment but it never delivered.

Saw the movie a couple hours ago and honestly it was ok at best. 6/10. It felt longer than it needed to be and the CGI really could of been better but it's was a ok movie. I think the first wonder woman movie was far better

Wonder Woman 3 is definitely gonna do worse. Basically everyone is saying the movie was crap. A shame considering the first was actually decent.

How this movie had the attention to detail to put a Minor Threat poster outside a record store in 1984 Washington DC and yet get everything else completely wrong mystifies me. Terrible movie in plot and the most unconvincing '80s atmosphere I can remember being attempted. The first one was pretty good but I will not watch the next one.

The movie was about an hour longer than it needed to be and was borderline OK. The post-production and CGI were mediocre. The only reason it did well at the box office is because it was one of the few movies at the box office. Not sure how making $85 million on a $200 million film is considered impressive and calls for the fast track of a third film in any event.

Personally I enjoyed the movie, it was like a 7/10 still being in the upper of DC. What confuses me about the movie is it's message - Accepting the truth? Accepting your life as is? Don't dream for something bigger just stay down? Female empowerment and equality but screw men? It was fun in the moment but not much of a game changer or thought provoker - though WW felt like more of a superhero than most, not focusing solely on the bad guy during fights to be able to save pedestrians where as most movies don't show that once the big bad is on screen unless its for the person to be captured as a hostage.

WTF was this movie even trying to say? Everyone was horrible in 1984 and now we're not? Thanks Wonder Woman?

Spoilers ahead: Over the course of the film we see 1984 portrayed as a time where everyone smokes, litters, steals, drives like a maniac, and wants only for themselves... this literally results in the world reaching nuclear holocaust when everyone on the planet's wishes are granted. You're telling me not a single person on earth was going to wish to save somebody else? or for world peace? or for this fucking movie to end?

When Kristen Wiig and WW woman first meet, all of 2 minutes goes by before they're talking about if they have any men in their lives. Then the wish stone comes along and WW wishes for her boyfriend (I think at one point she even says something like he's the only thing she's ever wanted and she can't give him up), and then the creepy bodysnatcher/manrape stuff happens. Kristen Wiig wishes to be like WW because she's pretty and every man we see is constantly, disgustingly hitting on her. How is that a positive, empowering message for women? How is that in any way respectful towards men?

I enjoyed the first WW movie but this one was complete trash (I won't even get into the plot holes) and I think Patty Jenkins should not be allowed to make the next one... and now I'm really worried about her making the Rogue Squadron movie.

Not as good as the first one and way too cheesy.

Took inspiration from GET OUT? GET OUT is horror satire but what is Wonder Woman 84 getting at? Rape is OK?

BTW the CGI is pretty awful...

What a disappointing movie. The whole cheesy 80’s theme was terrible and a far cry from the serious tone of the first.

I have HBO Max and I have no interest in rewatching this movie, any time soon.

Fingers crossed for Suicide Squad. After Captain Marvel, Birds of Prey, and WW84, I have low hopes for Black Widow.

WW84 is proof that any movie is a cash cow as long as there's a known superhero attached to it.

I put aside my hatred towards the first WW movie being a blatant copy of the first Captain America movie and after a whole year of nothing coming out due to covid, I was excited to see a blockbuster coming to life.

At the end of the movie, i had only one question:

WTF was Gamespot thinking when they gave this crap 9 out of 10?

I know it's a matter of opinion and opinion varies, wildly, but there's no way to sit through this and came out thinking it was great.

The special effects alone were ridiculous to the point that it was easy to see the bits where Gal Gadot was clearly suspended by cables. There's no fluidity to it and the whole "Spiderman riding the lightning" BS was some of the most awful looking effects I've seen since Flash Gordon.

And don't get me started on the story. The hollow Dreamstone back story, the bastardization of both Crysis and the George Perez books to the ridiculous Hallmark moment that culminated a story that should have ended with Wonder Woman snapping Max Lord's neck is a real joke.

@eli150: Ahhhhhh Here we go!!! I didn't like a movie made by a woman. I must be an old misogynist.

It's funny how you can call me that and you see no problem with it. It's almost like the oppressed has had enough time and protection that they can become the oppressor. Funny how that works right?

While you're here wasting time, can you elaborate on why you think this movie is "Stunning and Brave"? I'm sure my old, male brain will have trouble understanding, but don't be discouraged. You may inspire a whole new group of youngsters to be better people.

I only watch a movie in theaters once a year, maybe once every 2 or 3 years. I was excited to watch this movie in the theaters. Then COVID hit, and my local movie theater shut down. So I haven't been able to see this movie yet. How can they consider this a profit? Power Rangers 2017 made more money than this. Furthermore, I believe they should just slow down on making movies until we can fully open up movie theaters again. It's not fair for small business owners to take 100% of the hit for COVID-19.

@WarGreymon77: It is not like we do not have a guide path via history to show us. From the deadly pandemics 5 yrs ago, 20 yrs ago, in the 80s, 68', 18', and countless times throughout history. Everyone should slow it down and help each other.

After most have been vaccinated, and things return to normal. We can then forget all about it and get caught off guard once more. I mean in parts of the world, they are ethnic cleansing, earthquakes killing ten of thousands, Japans Tsunami, millions being displaced by war., and never being allowed to go home ever again. We here in the USA can avoid covid, and suffer through for one year. Then go back to letting people sneeze on us in crowded theatres once more.

@WarGreymon77: The movie was mostly finished before Covid (I think). It was delayed almost a year. HBO paid a lot so that people could watch it at home on Xmas, so it probably made a profit (just not as big as producers hoped).

To your similar point, movie production HAS been slowed down. Batman production stopped. Black Widow and other movies are pushed back at least a year.

Also, I'm not a small business owner, and I took a "hit." I'm not sure what your final point is, but I def get the frustration.

@WarGreymon77: While I don't disagree with you, and I haven't seen either movie, they can't 'slow down' on making movies. Some movies, like WW84, start production 2-4 years before they come out. Smaller, independent films might be able to push off movies, but only for so long before money/interest dries up. And that down time can cause people to lose jobs.

The box office is just that, box office. It made 8 times what the next film did. Meaning that's how motivated people were to see it. Also it doesn't account for those watched on HBO Whatever.

This movie was terrible. The only reason it got "good box office" is because people were expecting a sequel on the level of the 1st movie. This isn't it. I would rank this movie slightly above Justice League.

Seriously, it's bad. For an "empowering" movie, it sure takes tons of liberties. Hey - I know! Let's rip the soul of a guy, replace it with another guy, then use his body (sexually) without permission. What happened to #metoo? Oh, that's only for women, right?

And who the hell thought of setting a movie in 1984 WITHOUT using any music from the 1980s? Didn't Guardians of the Galaxy teach you anything?!?

DC Universe is a train wreck. This movie simply proves that the first Wonder Woman was a lucky shot. Take the DC Universe out back, shoot it, and bury it 12 feet under. Not 6 feet... 12. Don't want any stray dogs thinking they can dig up anything related to DCU.

@CyberEarth: Yeah there is nothing else to watch. No marvel offerings, fewer fall tv shows, and just a handful of awful B movies.

Not a horrible movie, not a good one either. Worse then the first one, better then almost anything WW has been in, in other DC projects. And no wear near as good as anything Marvel.

One breaking 1984 bad FX reference, when Max Lord takes over the radio communication particles.....blah blah blah, all of those 1984' processors apple II e computers are somehow !!! able to show a high speed color picture... lol. Amazing what green dot matrix could show back then.

@jenovaschilld: Oddly, you could get an Apple II/e to show color if the software you used supported it by connecting to a tv rather than the computer monitor. I did this for the games Ultima 3 and 4.

"Color" though, was limited to maybe 4 colors if I remember correctly. Blue/Red/Green/White. But that could have also been the limits of those particular pieces of software...

PS - yes, I am old.

@CyberEarth: OMG, that is pretty cool. My Apple IIe monitor was built in, and much like a tv that I could remember. Yeah I remember programming for the apple IIe using basic language when i was in like grade school, allowing you to make a bars a certain color and go in directions. And when we got a copy of something like Karateka to work.... mind blown. https://www.youtube.com karateka

I was referring to WW 84' apple Macintoshes or lisa or apple iie for like business processing and bookkeeping were you would see,.. in say offices. As this was also before internet. I thought it was funny- as me and my boss watched this same film, as it then started showing a live color broadcast. My boss is 71 (who used to buy and work on them), and I look over at him, and before I could even say something, he instantly said, "pornhub looked that good to".

This is the STUPIDEST movie of 2020, by far. It's a neuron killing, coma-inducing, 2 and a half hour, cheese-filled, snooze-fest, bad episode of Smallville. Complete with 1984-era CGI (ridiculous Cat villain, filmed in the dark, that makes Cats - The Movie - look good in comparison --- Terrible shopping mall CGI that makes WW look like she's floating on the surface of the moon, etc), stupid magical, wish granting crystals, and Pedro Pascal doing a goddam Power Ranger villain, with the villainous HA HA HA's and everything.

The first WW movie is the best DC film since the Nolan trilogy, but this sequel is THE WORST. That's right, worse than Suicide Squad. Worse than Birds of- okay, maybe it's the second worst. THE POINT IS IT SUCKS! lol

I gave the movie a 5/10 score. Basically two in half hours of just boring movie. The whole story was bad and terribly thought out. What the heck Steve Trevor was doing there? The guy looks out of place, like he should have never been there and even worst forcing him into the movie to be there when he should have never been there in the first place. The whole story behind the characters in the movie was bad.

Very disappointed that i had to wait nearly two in half hours, nearly to the end of the movie to see Cheetah fight wonder woman for just 2 or 3 minutes. I'm a action fan and this movie lacked action and the whole thing was badly put all together. I wish they would have added a few more actions scenes between the Cheetah and wonder woman and all they were able to mustard was one scene and another short minor confrontation just before the real final fighting scene at the end of the movie

Patty was giving two chances to do justice to wonder woman and she failed miserably both times. Replace patty Jenkins and anyone that is working with her with the writing and put someone else at the helm, and let someone else do the next movie and don't let Patty Jenkins blow it again.

SO I'm confused. I guess EVERYONE at Gamespot loved this movie?. How are they not touching on the fact that probably more than half of the audience says it sucked. I literally thought the beginning scene was a homage to 80's superhero "cheesyness". NOPE, they whole thing was like that. How do they actually let those old school close up scenes where it's not even close to really looking like she's running pass the test?.....and the dialogue...Holy shit the dialogue...She is amazed at Trevors flying skills then moments later she's casually swinging from lightning bolts(a potentially cool idea wasted and literally shown for seconds.) I really liked the first movie, this one is just plain bad. Yet everyone that works at Gamespot or IGN is pretending that its the best superhero movie of all time, one of them gave it a 9...9!!!!..Are you serious??.Why is this not being called out? This is really weird...

Honestly, myself and my friends saw this movie on the basis of the great first one. It was a let down. We will not be seeing the 3rd movie. Mistakes were made!
