Wonder Woman 3 Is Being Fast-Tracked After Impressive Box Office For WW84

Wonder Woman 1984 opened to the highest box office since the pandemic began.

While the bar for a successful theatrical release isn't high in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 has cleared it, reporting a box office of $16.7 million over its three-day Christmas opening weekend according to a press release. This figure is the best any movie has reported since the pandemic began, beating out Tenet and The Croods: A New Age's COVID-affected openings.

While the numbers would be disappointing in a normal year, Wonder Woman 1984 has done better than expected given the circumstances. It currently boasts a total box office of $85 million, with $68.3 million of that coming from outside the USA. And because of this, Wonder Woman 3 is being fast-tracked.

Now Playing: Wonder Woman 1984 Review: Even Better Than The Original

"As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able continue her story with our real life Wonder Women--Gal and Patty--who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy," said Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Wonder Woman 1984 was the first of Warner Bros' movies to release simultaneous in theatres and on HBO Max, as the company will do with all its film releases in 2021. Warner Media revealed that over half of HBO Max's subscribers viewed Wonder Woman 1984 on the day it dropped, though the company hasn't said if the release led to increased numbers of new subscribers to the platform. Not all Americans have had the chance to see Wonder Woman in theaters, with over half of the country's theaters still closed due to the pandemic.

Wonder Woman 1984 has received a mixed bag of positive and negative reviews (GameSpot's was one of the former, with a score of 9/10), resulting in an ambivalent score of 59 on Metacritic. Gal Gadot is attached for the next installment, with Patty Jenkins returning to write and direct. The next film may be a while off, however, with Jenkins already attached to an upcoming Star Wars Rogue Squadron movie with Disney.

@brenhonian: Ironically (or not), the SJW part only goes one way in favor of women. Think of Steve... he got transplanted into some other guy's body, then that guy's body got used (even sexually) without the body owner's permission. The original owner didn't give any consent to that.

@CyberEarth: As if there are any double standards acknowledged by the agenda-driven grave fodder that make these complete wastes of money.

A person can have their brain separated by hemisphere surgically and can still make the common sense decisions that wouldn't even get this movie into story-boarding.

I'm encouraged by the fact that so many people that love the genre. Are giving this movie such bad or lukewarm reviews. I find it interesting that if I'm not mistaken, Gal Gadot is one of the producers. I'm not sure that stars of films, being producers for those films. Is a guarantee of a quality production, and could turn out to be vanity pieces. Personally, I'm getting bored with the Superhero genre movies that Hollywood is churning out. They are becoming as repetitious as the comic books, and are rarely targeted to people over 16. It took a film like "Deadpool" to show that an "R" rated superhero film could make a lot of money, and, be aimed at a more mature audience. I hope all superhero films in the future have better writing, less social commentary, and plots that don't rely on CGI to make them interesting. "I have spoken."😁

@tread33: Uh its not people love the genre its that we are getting NOTHING new. This "genre" sucks, hard.

If Dune was out I would have never seen this movie, because I would have just watched Dune again.

@ohmya337: I understand your feelings. As you know. The Hollywood Entertainment industry is a business.. and businesses are "risk averse". So that means that new and fresh productions are rare. The same list of movie actors/actresses is selected from, for every new "blockbuster" film. Fortunately, folks like yourself and younger generations won't spend their money on the same old tired stuff. Computers are producing lifelike images of people. They look totally real. As computer power increases and software gets more and more advanced. We will see computer created actors that won't need to be paid millions of dollars per film. The gaming industry already surpasses the film industry in profits. You folks are going to love the future that you are creating.👍👍😊

@tread33: Uh you are as just as much of a part of it as everyone else. I dont know if you know that FACT, but you are nothing special.

FFS you are telling a business graduate about risk management you are just as big an idiot as everyone else. Have a nice life!

"They are a business so they have an excuse" you are the same type of scum sh*tbag who defends Apples recent use of child labor, because it nets them more profits. The world would be better off without people like you. Sound like a f*cking bureaucrat.

@ohmya337: It would feel good insulting you in return for your extremely offensive comments. However, I think that it is obvious that it wouldn't make a difference with your apparently negative personality traits, and possible anti social mind set. So, I will just wish you a Happy New Year, if that is at all possible for you.😏

@tread33: I didnt like the movie, but those around me young and old had a fine ole time. This movie was not targeted to me specifically, but to a younger female, maybe also.... old enough to remember the 80's which is hip now. Point is , regardless of my feelings, others really enjoyed that 1980s fun A-Team like romp where no one gets hurt, and red herrings abound.

I have been spoiled by some amazingly good 'comic' movies that are not just good superhero movies but damn good movies period. Great movies and entertainment regardless about what they were about. And also tempered by some incredible piles of shit, like BvS, suicide squad, JL, first Hulk, New Mutants, etc.

WW 84' was a good movie, but that was about it. No violence, body count, almost no sex, ... a very safe movie that easily inspires young girls and ..... I guess old men who want to be little girls. And that is just fine. Like people claimed Nancy Drew was a bad rip off of hardy boys, so what, ND inspired millions of young girls and that is sometimes ... just fine enough.

@jenovaschilld: I don't disagree with what you have said for the most part. I have four daughters, two of which are adopted and could be considered "older Millennials" if there is such a thing. American films and TV productions have been "morality plays" for decades. Note that the 1930's Film Industry established a censorship board. One of the guide lines not to be crossed was that an "evil doer" would have to be punished in some way, by the end of the story. I am old, but I have been a fan of Sci/Fi etc. for decades. I would like to be able to continue to enjoy Sci/Fi and Superhero oriented films and TV productions. I understand that the Entertainment Industry is more interested in productions targeting younger demographics. I understand that there are those that want to see current social issues addressed in films and TV today. Personally, I prefer that entertainment be "agnostic" and just tell stories that are well written and acted. Basically, I am fortunate enough to have a reasonable amount of funds that I can dedicate to entertainment. If the Entertainment industry doesn't want my money. That's fine because I won't spend my money on their offerings. Just as I "cut the cord" decades ago, because Broadcast and Cable productions were of no interest to me. I can say the same for movie theaters, where audiences tend to be very annoying. Now I get my entertainment from streaming services, and occasionally playing PC games. The last resort will probably be reading some of the hundreds of books in my library.😲 Oh.. the horror!🤣 Happy New Year! "I have spoken" (you have to be a Disney+ subscriber to get that reference to a character in their Mandalorian series). 😊

@tread33: We have so much choice now compared to the 80s an 90s. More channels, streaming services, and even more movies that come out during the year, across a wide range, not to mention the excellent works that are coming out of Korean, spain, India, china, and well just about everywhere.

I do not think we will see WW84' sandwiched between the deadpool movies or following a suicide squad anytime soon. This will be on ABC family, or disney chanel, or nickolodean or even daytime cartoon network. And that is fine, I am not saying it is a childish production, it was okay, but at least not a horrible smolder like BvS. It was well designed for who the writers directors and producers wanted to inspire. It is not like WW#52 ripping heads off, blood flowing, and her only weakness is never able to back down.

I like the teen titans, the airbender, the harry potters, that are amazing works of art clearly made for people much less my age. These are not the first goto shows for me or probably you, but they have their place and audience. And I see that WW 84' was made for a certain audience and that alone does not write it off as terrible to me. It was not a badly made movie just one whois decisions were made for a different set. Meanwhile a movie like say 'suicide squad' was a badly mad movie target to a specific audience that really hated it. I mean, how do you screw up the 'suicide squad'?

@jenovaschilld: Sir? Madame? Once again I agree with what you've said, and understand your family's entertainment choices. Your correct about quality film and TV coming from countries outside of the U.S. I am fortunate in that the streaming services that I subscribe to offer some really good foreign film and TV productions. Much of my viewing entertainment has been focused on European Crime/Police dramas. Since American productions rarely interest me because of the socio/political slants, and/or that they are just basically subpar in my opinion. Viewing Foreign productions has increased my understanding of a few foreign languages. Some productions are reflections of the tastes and cultures of their native countries. That can effect how people of other countries and cultures view the merits of those productions. As you point out. There are so many productions on offer, it is hard not to find something of interest to watch for most of us. Personally, I like a productions with good CGI, sex, nudity, action and a certain amount of gore. All mixed in with good writing, directing, and acting. I am not above feeling tears forming in my eyes, during particularly touching scenes. There have also been instances in shows like the great "Ripper Street" TV series. Where the violence is particularly impactful and I have to say "That was pretty grim." Thank you for your kind and intelligent comments. It was a pleasure reading them. I certainly wish you, and your loved ones the very best of the coming New Year, and those that follow. 😊

@tread33: SAme to you, I do love the series from BBC that have came out over the years like River, Luther, Broadchurch, and my all time favorite Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency -perhaps 2 of the greatest seasons of TV this millennia. So amazing, that and River. And the IT crowd also. And Benny Hill, old school awesome.

And this https://vimeo.com/70478549 watch it, just a couple minutes long, dare you, life changing.

@jenovaschilld: I accept your challenge, and thank you for the link you provided. I watched all of the productions you've mentioned and enjoyed them all in varying degrees. Of the titles you mentioned. I have to say that Luther is my five star out of five, and two thumbs up👍👍💖😊 favorite crime series. I have an unhealthy affection for Ruth Wilson's character "Alice" in that series.🤣 I have Alice as the home screen photo on my Chromebook. Should you ever be interested in a wonderful foreign language police drama. I highly recommend - Rocco Schiavone: Ice Cold Murders - Season one & two on Amazon Prime or PBS (Walter presents). If you have Amazon Prime Video or another way to watch it. The audio is in Italian, with English subtitles. It's a lovely, family friendly Police drama. Lastly.. If you're interested.. Here's a live link to a CCTV camera at Times Square in New York City. Getting ready for the New Year's Eve celebration there. The link --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ7ZkQ5TC08 It has been a pleasure chatting with you. Once again.. HAPPY NEW YEAR!😊

@CyberEarth: Understood, and I agree that you make a valid point. However, in some productions producers have a lot of influence as to how a production is designed. Some producers just provide funds, while other producers are very active in deciding what writers and actors to hire etc. Many times the actors, directors and writers are blamed for poor productions. However, it is the "money people" that are often to blame. I have a feeling, but no proof. That Gadot as a producer, and star of the movie. Had a lot of influence as to the important things that went into making the film. Personally, I really have very little interest in seeing the movie. I may at some point decide to watch it when there is nothing else I would prefer to see at that time. Happy New Year, and of course.. "I have spoken".😊

Watched it last night and I was honestly very disappointed. I thought Pedro Pascal did a great job but I felt that everything else was lacking. Especially the CGI and special effects. The first movie was way better than this. There were a couple cool moments which I won't spoil, but overall, I wasn't happy.

Still haven't seen 1984 (stayed up too late getting my PS4 house in order, as the 5 is supposed to arrive today), but those trailers looked horrible, and people I know said it was like cable porn without the porn, so maybe it'll be deliciously bad. If so, I'd prefer Robert Rodriguez directed the sequel. No reason if the central plot revolves around a wishing stone and an amazon fighting a tiger woman that we can't have some machine gun tits to go with the cheesefest.

@id0ntkn0w7: The movie features characters and central plot points that have existed in WW comics for several decades. The "amazon fighting a tiger woman" theme is something that was created in those comics in the 1940s that got ripped off six ways from Sunday by other writers.

I'm not defending the movie but the shallow thinking kind of creeps me out.

@id0ntkn0w7: No. It drags on in places, and some of the effects were horrible.

I really liked the first movie. This one almost seems like it was produced by a complete different person even though it wasnt.

Its ok if you want to kill some time, but this movie isnt anything special.

@zerojuice: Whaddya ya'll talking about? It's a GS 9/10!

...

Seriously though, it's pretty bad. Didn't advance the DCU at all. Hardly advanced the character. Dragged on (2.5 hours of trite). Ham-fisted overarching theme. Filled with nonsense that even suspension of disbelieve cannot explain (i.e. bad writing).

And it wasn't even fun bad. Just bad.
