WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW '09 suits up

THQ and Jakks bringing retooled editions of its popular World Wrestling Entertainment franchise to X360, PS3, PS2, PSP, DS, Wii, and mobile this fall.

The ebb and flow of petty in-fighting is one of the primary characteristics of any good World Wrestling Entertainment story arc. The same can be said for the gaming franchise based off of the popular pastime, as its history has taken more than a few cues from its fantasized counterpart.

Tag-team takes a front seat this year.
Tag-team takes a front seat this year.

In the three-way cage match that is the WWE-THQ-Jakks alliance, the game publisher has come out on top the most in recent months, with a United States District Court judge dismissing a WWE racketeering lawsuit brought against the two gamemakers in December, and THQ touting a court decision against Jakks over royalty rates earlier this month.

Luckily for fans of burly men grappling with one another, the entertainment label along with its game-making partners still manage to put aside their differences long enough to produce a game every year, and THQ today announced WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2009 will take to the ring this fall. As with last year, THQ will be releasing editions of the game on nearly every current platform, including the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Wii, and mobile.

As is customary of annualized franchises, Jakks has performed a number of adjustments under the hood of its latest game. On the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, and PSP, Jakks will be revisiting tag-team play, revising mechanics, and implementing a number of new ways to eliminate opponents. The franchise's character customization will be further expanded with a new Create-A-Finisher option, and the Road to WrestleMania career mode will feature co-op storylines. THQ also promises downloadable content to be available in the future.

With the Wii version of SmackDown! vs. RAW debuting last year, Jakks will be amping up the game's offerings with an expanded suite of modes, including online play. On the DS, SmackDown! vs. RAW 2009 offers a number of alterations to the formula, including a redesigned Season mode that takes more of a role-playing tack. The roster of superstars has also been expanded, with the Create-a-Superstar mode now added to the DS edition.

I still have yet find a next-gen wrestling game (even though Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain came close) that can hold a candle to those old N64 wrestling games. WWF No Mercy was and is still king.

Hmm, didn't read about a graphic upgrade. Bummer, the PS2 and Xbox 1 versions don't look much worse than on next gen systems.

They need to stop making these games for the older systems. Really now, how do they expect me to buy a game for the 360 that can run on a PS2/Wii? Different versions, sure, toned down effects, yes, but same crappy engine they've been using since 2004. Tag team enhancements might be nice.. if it's an actual AI/concept boost, and not some lame mini game being touted as an 'update'. What would be nice is if they put in the same counter system from HCTP. Simple and efficient. Custom Finishers? When will they bring my custom entrance music back?! Ah well.. I know I can just play it off the HD, but that's lame. I hope I can finally make my characters' super cool version of the Russian Leg Sweep.. Mmmmm.. Co-op story mode ftw. I'll never understood why they removed that post-HCTP. That's the entire reason I played in the first place. I had a character, my buddy had a character. Maybe they'll have storylines as diverse as in HCTP.. ..And please, no voices! Leave those poor wrestlers alone! You can TELL they don't want to do them!

These games suck seriously, bring back Aki Corp. The N64 Wrestling games and Def Jam Fight for NY were the best!

"matter of fact just create a new engine instead of using the same Japanese engine that has been used forever." Ummm...how about reviving the DOR engine? There's really nothing wrong with it, all it would need is some tweaking and updating, and it's much more solid than the SVR engine.

So this is like the Madden of wrestling games huh? Although I guess that isnt saying to much considering this is about all there is. Best wrestling games Ive ever played were on the Nintendo 64, those were great games.

Another typical crappy Smackdown game with the updated roster. When is this Franchise going to let the development go to another team? Are these people stuck in 2005? Same graphics, same robotic animation, same moves, same everything. THQ doesn't care cause they know they're going to cash in anyway. Let Sega take over and you'll see a revolution in wrestling gaming.

I love it! Tag teams have always been my favorite part of wrestling and I always seem to have a few stables with friends when I get a wrestling game, so I think this focus on tag teams is LONG overdue. I mean, they haven't done a tag team storyline since the N64's No Mercy, let alone anything co-op. I hope they deliver on their promises because if they do I will buy immediately. Oh, and here's to hoping they don't pull a fast one with Wii owners again. Check out my user review if your curious what I mean by that.

I don't think they should drop the PS2 version at all. And I have a 360. I am glad to see Sony is still putting some games on the old system even if it is not all. I would have liked that for my poor xbox but such is life. And create a brand mode is a good idea. Also another grave problem I had. A wrestler rated at 83 should not beat a wrestler rated at 100. It is preposterous. Even if your huge, if your a weak fighter you should automatically be able to beat a smaller more skilled character(AI vs AI)

Going multi-platform was the core mistake. With that decision, their resources are spread much thinner. Few developers can pull it off well. EA is huge, and has enough manpower to cover so many at once. This team doesn't. My opinion: 06 was best on PSP, 07 was best on 360. I've only played the DS 08, so I can't comment on its other versions.

yeah, i would get more excited if they would stop "tweaking" the current system, and announce that they're starting from scratch. they also need to just drop the PS2 version. i do like the sound of a create-a-finisher mode, though, and i hope Festus is in it. :D

I want to see a create-a-brand mode. That way we can add TNA iMPACT! to RAW, Smackdown!, and ECW plus anything else we can dream up. Create-a-finisher sounds interesting though.

Why is it a Grandpa game on a grandpa system like No Mercy is still cutting anything in today's wrestling game arena's ass? They had Legends in 08' Where were all the rest? Why only one costume? The create an entrance is glitchy, bugged and a bit to complicated for it to be fun. Why is there only one belt you can fight for in 24/7 mode? Why was there no targetting? The story mode lasts one year and repeats over and over. Every year I try to amp myself for when wrestling comes out and every year my effort is for nothing.

09 needs to bring Street Fights back and add some new Tournaments and add more spots to Create-A-Title. 08 had more flaws then ever before. also THQ needs to work on the online and get it fixed. 08 had horrible online and it showed.

There is a lot this guys can make better in the game starting in the Road to Wrestlemania mode. There are tons of features they can add to make the game more re playable. I can make a huge list of things but I don't have the time cause I am in work. If the producers of the game open to the real gamer public for emails and opinions it can be one of the most important steps in the gaming history. I am sure that we have tons of good ideas for tons of games out there that can be implemented in sequels. But well it seems that it is hard to read emails from real gamers this days.

Why make it more of a simulation like Tony Hawk's is doing? Just make it alot more fast paced and arcade like, whilst implementing body damage, stamina and momentum. Make SvR 2009 kinda like Here Comes The Pain and SvR 2007

The career mode better get a huge facelift as that 24/7 in 08 was just garbage. Also make the career more then 1 year long and then just repeat basically as that is totally gay. Add in a ton of more options also in the GM Mode as that seems to be the best way to play this game long term I find.

I'm with "Sins-of-Mosin" on this one. Please redo the controls for the DS. Using the stylus only was a complete failure. We want to mash buttons not draw our moves. MY daughter is a big wrestling fan and couldn't wait for the first wrestling game for the DS for XMAS. Long story short, she traded it in for Hamsterz2, sad.

Anyone else far from excited about 'new' smackdowns these days? The Smackdown series hit its peak with the first few PS2 games...everything after that was downhill all the way and 08 was the absolute pits. Ironically, this is exactly how Smackdown came on the scene in the late 90s...lackluster WWF (Warzone and Attitude anybody?) and WCW (Nitro was plain horrible) titles flooded the Saturn and PS before the Smackdown series became the new rising star. Now I'm wondering if the new TNA wrestling game is set to repeat that feat...except this time it's Smackdown that's being smacked down. History does tend to repeat itself...

Hope they get most of the bugs fixed before release this time. Although it is funny to try to jump over the ropes on to someone outside the ring and end up taking a 180 degree flight back in the ring, but some of the other bugs were very annoying. Also, hope they bring back targeting.

Wii version was such a disappointment last year. Couldn't they just make it more the gameplay more traditional like Day of Reckoning was on Gamecube. Who cares about waving the Wiimote and nunchuk if the responses aren't precise? Probably rent before buying it.

Here's a bit from a Cory Ledesma interview about this game: "The other big feature is that we're overhauling our tag team match. What's really exciting about this is that we've pretty much had the same tag team match in there for a while, and it really plays like a single match with a legal partner waiting on the side." ...that's pretty much what a tag team match IS DUMBASS!!!! Wow, this guy really needs to get off whatever the hell it is he's smoking.
