Xbox 360 tops April console sales, Kinect library to triple in 2011

Q&A: Microsoft product manager says system added 297,000 units last month, rules out price cut; Kinect Sports sells 3 million, Dance Central moves 2.5 million.

Today, the NPD Group issued its US retail sales report for April, revealing total consumer spending rose a sizable 20 percent. And though the firm did not release specific software or hardware sales figures, Microsoft followed up that announcement with one of its own, proclaiming the Xbox 360 as the top-selling console in April with an additional 297,000 units. That performance marks 11 of the past 12 months in which the Xbox 360 topped the PlayStation 3 and Wii.

Kinect Sports is striking gold on the Xbox 360.
Kinect Sports is striking gold on the Xbox 360.

Following the announcement, GameSpot spoke with Xbox Group product manager David Dennis, who said that Xbox 360 sales climbed a massive 60 percent sales in April. Total retail spend on the Xbox platform reached $310 million during the month, a figure which the company says beats out Nintendo and Sony.

"I think it's continued momentum coming out of the holiday for us," Dennis said. "We had a great run with Xbox and Kinect. It won 11 out of 12 months; we lost December by a small margin because we ran out of consoles because Kinect was on fire, and we picked that run up again in January. We've been the best-selling console so far this year in 2011."

Dennis also trumpeted software sales, saying that Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, Crysis 2, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters, and Michael Jackson: The Experience sold best on the Xbox 360.

With these strong sales figures in mind, Dennis said that gamers should not expect the Xbox 360 to follow the Wii's price cut. "You really only drop price when you need to, and with the continued momentum that we've got, we don't have any plans in the works," he said. "As long as we continue to bring great games and have good momentum, that isn't something you'll see us consider."

Saying Kinect sales are "as expected," Dennis also noted that Kinect isn't likely to see a price cut any time soon. "Not right now," he said. "The momentum around it is great. The games pipeline is a rich one, and I think we'll keep things where they're at until we see otherwise." As for that pipeline, Microsoft said that it expects to triple the Kinect games portfolio by the end of the year.

Dennis declined to say how many Kinect units were sold during the month. However, he did call out the performance of Kinect Sports and Dance Central, which have now sold 3 million units and 2.5 million units worldwide, respectively. "For Kinect games to be posting the numbers that they are, we feel great about that momentum," he said.

GameSpot also asked Dennis about the current turmoil at Sony surrounding the PlayStation Network. He said that while he didn't have information concerning Xbox Live usage, he could say that the outage hasn't resulted in any noticeable impact on Xbox 360 sales. Dennis also confirmed that Microsoft hasn't received any attack of its own and that the publisher did not take any extra security measures that weren't already standard practice in the wake of the attack.

@COPMAN221 What are these "years of turmoil" your talking about? How exactly was I ripped off? I bought a launch Xbox... it functioned perfectly for 2 years and then it RROD'd on me. I called MS and within 10 min they had sent me a box to return the 360 for repair or replacement with no charge to me. I was without my box for 1 week before I got a replacement. Again, all free of charge too me. It functioned for another year or so until It was accidentally dropped after shipping it across the country as I had to travel for work. I bought the original arcade and simply used my old HD and that has worked perfectly for over 3 years now. I also got the special edition Halo:Reach box from my wife for my birthday. So, I've never had to pay to replace a "defective" product as you call it. MS has done nothing but been helpful. Oh, not sure if you knew this truth, but MS spent a ton of its own money making sure that people didn't get stuck with a "defective" product.

@jcbullen Agreed. I have played both and I prefer Kinect much more.I think most people that bash it have never even played it, or gave it a chance. I prefer my controller but I think Kinect is actually pretty fun and I agree, that I'm sure Microsoft didn't purposely sell the consoles as defects, just to turn around and spend more $$ with repairs from their extended warranty.Yeah, they rushed it, and admitted it, and now most are moving on. Most.

@COPMAN221 "The Kinect is nothing more than a $150.00 PS2 Eye toy.." Yeah and a Porsche GT3 is only a $150,000 Kia. What is your point? Similar? Yes (they are both cars). But one is better than the other due to being more technologically advanced, powerful, useful. "I guess people like you don't mind getting ripped off by a company that knew and sold a defective product from day 1 just to get your hard earned cash" LOL, you think Microsoft released a product with a defect so they would get more of our hard earned cash? Yeah I'm pretty sure they would have made a lot more money if they would have released something w/o a defect and not had to replace some people's hardware. Truth of the matter is they released something with a problem, spent LOTS of money fixing it, and gave people a really good 3 year warranty against the defect.

@COPMAN221 Look. MS got behind the 360 and did something about it. That is #1. They care about what they are putting out. I have no idea where you get this MS knew is was gonna happen before it came out crap. That is not true at all. I own a PS3, a 360, and wii. I play the 360 more than any of them. I like 360 only games better than the PS3 only games. I'm not telling you it is a fact that 360 games are better, it is what I think. This year 360 will have more 360 only games than PS3. Just about every dev wants to do something with the Kinect and they are. Kinect by the end of the year will have 60+ games. MGS5 will suport it and move as well. Yes. MGS5 kids. The only for this or that days are over. Dev's want to get there games out to the masses and get a return. Fact... The best games is in the eye of the beholder.. Not what you think. If gamers were hurt so bad by MS, the 360 would not be here today.

@elancion You really haven't read up to much about that issue, there is a difference between a company who lacks in the network security department than a company who has always accelerate at Internet Network Security. It doesn't matter who attacked it.....if someone wanted to steal your car...they would steal your car. Same goes for any attack, what you can do though is always be on alert and take preventive measures. Sony failed miserably to take such action and they have shown their Negligence publicly to their own consumers.

the only difference as far as problems with network go is that Microsoft , didn't have an individual or group of individuals so relentless/determined to hack into their online system. im pretty sure this is a wake up call to many big companies including Microsoft who are no doubt improving upon their own systems albeit behind the scenes (keeping it hush hush) as to avoid media or public questioning about how secure their systems truly are.Who wouldn't ? No system is 100% hack proof. where there is a will there is always a way.

@garland51 Yup, this is the year of the game, not the year of the console. Mass Effect, Skyrim, Rage, Duke, Deus Ex, LA Noire... those are the biggest games of the year. I would bet Mass Effect, or Skyrim win GOTY, maybe LA Noire. I doubt Gears or Infamous are going to even come close to GOTY compared to those games. So, to everyone out there wanting to bash the 360 and go on and on about exclusives..... My position is this is not the year of the PS3, or 360(however 360 will in my estimation beat PS3 in sales every month) it is the year of the game. We all win this year! Except of course PS3 owners that want to do some online gaming.... you guys have been hit hard and I would like to ask for a moment of silence. LOL Seriously that really sucks though

@demonkingx5 I love this argument. Ok, let me say it loud and proud for everyone... MASS EFFECT WAS NOT EXCLUSIVE TO 360 BECAUSE IT WAS ALSO RELEASED ON THE PC. But PS3 didn't get it now did they? LOL Yeah, I know so many PS3 owners that also are PC gamers. That is such a joke. Look my point was that if you had a PS3 it was more likely than not that you didn't get to play Mass Effect because you generally spent 4-6 hundred on your console and didn't have 1200 to spend on a gaming rig. But keep telling me how wrong I am about Mass Effect being an exclusive on the 360. Don't address the fact that I've stated the exclusives this year on either system are less than stellar. LOL I swear, read only what you wanna read huh?

@thebeachguy90 Not at all, I know it is coming back. But this article talks about 360 sales going wild in April and I would bet you that next month the sales for May will show the same trend. One reason I think will be because currently, as in right now, Sony does not have an online service and MS does. I don't need to relax, I'm stating facts. If facts hurt you so, you shouldn't read these stories. Sony is taking a hit from this fiasco, yes brought on by a hacker, but allowed by their poor PSN support, implementation and business model. Sony messed up big here.

@monson21502 Well I also really love the offerings from Xbox this gen. And I agree that for years the Xbox versions of games have beat the PS3 version. But last year the balance of power in that area has balanced out. Dev's are learning how to program for the PS3 hardware so the games are coming out about equal. Move is a joke and I think everyone know that, Kinect is special and I'm excited to see what new games come out for it. I've had some ideas on how to integrate Kinect with the standard controller to add functionality to FPS's like a lean feature and such, so we will have to see who figures out ways of utilizing the tech in HardCore games. I have also really enjoyed the 360 exclusives however their aren't many this year, and I'm not super excited about the ones coming out this year on either system. As I've said, Rage, Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Duke, Deus Ex are the games I'm excited for and they are launching on all systems. So give credit where credit is due, but PS3 is not the king this Gen, it is the Wii.... and If you go with just hardcore systems, it is the 360. Sony messed up this gen and they should learn from it and move forward.

@austi722 LOL yup you are right, PC release = non exclusive on platforms LOL... Tell ya what, let me know how bad PC sales are effecting console sales. Look you have a valid point, Mass Effect did come out on the PC and 360, however when viewing it from a console wars perspective as we are doing here, 360 had it and PS3 did not. It was too bad too because for me, it is one of the greatest Sci-Fi franchises of all time. And you attack one point where you are semantically right yet you avoid addressing my point that the PS3 exclusives are nothing to go ape over. Their is no Halo level game that is a must have. Now last year was the first year that an exclusive really caught my eye on PS3, Black Rain or Heavy Rain or whatever the name of that game is. Definitely got me interested, but one game does not make me want to save up forever to get a new console. As I said, all the games worth anything are coming out on all systems. Even Gears 3 isn't all that interesting too me. Exclusives this year are not where its at.

@HGAT I'm not doing this to sound "cool". I just speak my mind that's it. When I said, "Anything can be hacked" that's true, not speculation. When I said, "Both consoles have games that people enjoy" that's also true, also not speculation. Your brain cells processing such ridiculous ideas is not my problem.

@Pokemon18986 I really hope you're not trying to pass that comment as facts. And that money you pay for Xbox Live goes towards DLC. Those deals cost millions, where else would that money come from? Whoever told you you pay for security obviously isn't a trusted source. What happened to PSN could happen to anyone. We thought it was secure too. Hackers have proven us wrong. We PS3 owners learned that no network is completely secure, there's just no such security system that exists yet. So please try to get your facts straight next time. People have their opinions on which console has better games. I think PS3 games has quality over quantity, and Xbox the opposite, but that is my opinion. I'm not passing it off as facts like you seem to be doing. Both systems have games that people enjoy. Period.

Sorry, nothing impressive about second place. If you didn't win, your a damn loser. PS3 and 360 got demolished in sales. Get over it. You don't get bragging rights for not winning something. At least Sony can still brag about having the best selling console of all time.

@IceJester45, Yeah, i agree although to be fair i think the PS2 had far wider range of exclusives mainly due to the competition comprising mainly of Nintendo & Sega (until the XBOX came along), which comprised mainly of 'Family' and 'Arcade-esque' titles, whereas the PS2 in addition to having an already massive following due to the success of the PS1 catered for a more serious gaming audience (dont mean that to sound patronising) which meant that developers would make games for the PS2 which simply wouldnt be considered for the Sega or Nintendo systems. When MS introduced the XBOX, developers quickly realised that they now had 2 platforms with which they could develop more serious game genres therefore potentially doubling their revenue. Now, we have 2 fantastic consoles which generally obtain the same games and Exclusives have become the 'Golden Fleece' of the industry, i think manly due to the profits made on a 'Multiplat' being much greater than that of an Exclusive title. Manufacturers understand this, which is why they constantly strive to develop new and exciting 'background' technology e.g. Online support & facilities in order to compete with their competitors.

@thenephariouson, Yep, E3 should be interesting this year. And, yeah, it's going to be good for all consoles because multiplat games are where it's at nowadays. It's incredible how similar the two main consoles are in terms of game selection. Honestly, one of my consoles could break, and I wouldn't have much of an incentive to repair or replace it as I get pretty much the same experience from the other console. The fact that people are getting all hot and bothered over the dozen or so first-party titles coming the PS3 this year sort of underscores how bad things have become for exclusives. Seven or eight years ago, a dozen exclusives on a console--especially a Sony platform--in one year would have been considered pitiful.

@COPMAN221 Yes my 360 RRoD'd and was replaced within 10 days for free and yes MS shouldn't have released it but that was fixed in end of 08 and beginning of 09. What has happened on the 360 since then? My PS3 bricked twice and was held hostage for 3 months because I wouldn't pay $150 because they broke it with a firmware update. Ms spent $3 billion to fix RRoD and it did and it's gone and has been gone. Stop beating a dead horse please.

I have to say that I am a fan of the PS3, but even I think that Sony needs to start accepting some responsibility and stop making jokes and excuses. The jokes were funny when the problem happened the first time, but humor doesn't make me feel like they want to fix the problem when it happens month after month. This is part of the reason that I don't mind paying for xbox live. As for the article...I'm glad to see that consoles are increasing sales. Kinect will definitely have to get better before I invest any money into it; although I might break down and get it for my wife since she loves the dance dance style games.

@rasterror, please show me where that is mentioned in the link. It's nothing more than your opinion. Just look at the time line of failure after failure from MS and the 360. You want to talk about "smear campaigns" well how about MS knowingly and willingly releasing a broken console to the public and then denying that there was ever any problems until the media got wind of the story and only then did they start changing their tune. Yeah MS handled it REAL good and didn't try to shaft anyone who bought their system. Keep drinking the Kool Aide my friend but some of don't forget so easily..
