Xbox 360 vs. PS3 Graphics Comparison Round 5

Six more games in the eternal battle between the consoles!

We're now getting onto our fifth installment of this feature, and with every passing year the differences between the consoles continue to melt away. When we first started this feature, the differences between some versions of games were astounding. Fight Night Round 3 looked drastically better on the Xbox 360 with its improved lighting and shadowing effects. The following year, the graphics on both platforms got considerably more even--Oblivion even looked better on the PlayStation 3. Every subsequent comparison pretty much ended the same, with the Xbox 360 getting the benefit of slightly higher-resolution textures and other marginal improvements that wouldn't be noticed unless the images were put side by side. We'll see if the trend holds true with some of the best games from this year.

We captured the following shots at 720p across both consoles directly over HDMI using the Matrox MXO2 Mini. We enabled full HDMI range on the PS3. Each game has six sets of rollover images. The first image is a full screenshot set resized to fit the width of the page, followed by a zoomed-in image set that we created by cropping the original screen grabs to show you how the games look at a 1:1 pixel ratio. The following images work in the same pattern. Mouse over the captions to swap the images back and forth.

Assassins Creed II

Assassins Creed II continues the trend we've seen with the Xbox 360 getting marginally better textures. You can see a bit more detail in Desmond's jeans, and the number 2 is considerably more clear in the Xbox shot. The Xbox 360 might also benefit from normal mapping, which gives the floor surfaces, the brick lines, and the door rivets a more 3D look.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman: Arkham Asylum is a fantastic-looking game on both platforms, and if you play it like we did (with Detective mode enabled 90 percent of the time), you'll never be able to tell the difference between the two versions. That said, from a technical standpoint the Xbox 360 benefits from higher-resolution textures, which you can see on the logo located on the guard’s arm in the first set of shots.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

Infinity Ward has done an excellent job with the game engine in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The game runs silky smooth and looks great on both consoles. Outside of a few blurry textures on the PlayStation 3, which can be seen on the gun stock and the ground textures, the two console versions look largely the same.

Dirt 2

Dirt 2 certainly lives up to its name. With the amount of mud, sand, and possibly even good-old dirt flying around, whatever difference there is between the two versions simply gets buried. As is usual, the Xbox 360 benefits from more-detailed textures, but the difference in this case is exceedingly minuscule.

Dragon Age

In a departure from the norm, the PlayStation 3 version looks cleaner because of its higher-resolution textures and the increased depth the textures get from bump mapping. While the Xbox 360 version looks worse, it definitely runs smoother.

Resident Evil 5

Much like the other games, Resident Evil 5 looks marginally better on the Xbox 360. The improved textures and shadow resolution give the 360 the edge, even if it is a very small one. Look at the last set of shots and you’ll see that the rag shadows are fuzzier on the PlayStation 3, and the basket (along with other on screen elements) looks more detailed on the Xbox 360.

My comments: Assassin's Creed 2: The colors on the PS3 are more vivid, other than that there's no noticeable difference. Batman: AA: The colors on the PS3 are more distinct, but it's slightly muddier. MW2: I don't notice any difference. Dirt 2: The shadows look a little better on the PS3. Dragon Age Origins: The colors are more natural on the PS3. Resident Evil 5: The 360 has slightly better dust in a couple of places.

I'm a PC gamer so obviously PC overrules all of these by considerable margins... With that said, if I could buy one, it would be the PS3 because it has a Bluray player. Granted it isn't the Silicon Optix Reon Chip that the videophile BR players have, but it works.

Xbox looks too blurry, kinda has a smoky, foggy effect on it but has more detail to it. PS3 has better colors and is smoother without the blur effect and the fog effect but is slightly less detailed. PS3 ftw

@Liam Eichbach Couldn't agree more, i'ts pointless to buy a console based on the graphics it can handle,PS3 is a great console, i bought 360 because of exclusive games and my taste for FPS games, not some sick fanboyism >:D

It is obvious that the PS3 has slowly caught up to the 360 in terms of the multi-plat ports. Would be interesting to see that next year, another 12 months in the dev cycle for both, you could say that PS3 might edge out the 360. This would be attributed to the ability to store higher res textures onto the PS3 Blu-Ray disc. Dragon Age was a prime example of that. The difference were either down to the texture resolution being bigger for the PS3, or the 360's compression a lot higher in order to fit them onto the 9GB disc.

So... Dirt 2 looks better on 360, Dragon Age looks better on PS3, MW2 looks better on 360, AA looks better on PS3. Assassins Creed looks basically the same. I'd call it nearly as even as it gets considering the game choices.

Each console have their strong points, whether it's textures or lighting, it really comes down to which controller and online features you like the best. Just stop the damn console wars already.

I own a PS3 and I have to say that I don't see anything noteworthy here. XBOX 360 has wonderful graphics as well. It's really pointless to judge on looks alone when the track record speaks in volumes. The PS3 is stable, it plays blue ray and is slightly newer allowing more technical possibilities... so thats why I would think it's a better buy. If you're going at it for graphics then its pointless, because much of that falls on the shoulders of a game's developers and how skilled they are versus how well they push the hardware. The people behind Assassin's Creed are just awesome, so the game will look great on both systems.

The PS3 is more difficult to work with, so many developers choose to put more emphasis on the 360. Doesn't change the fact that the PS3 exclusives look better than any other console game. Honestly, I don't see the point. If you look closely, yes, the 360 does look slightly better. So what? The differences are miniscule at best. And let's not forget that graphics aren't nearly the most important thing about games. Story, gameplay and replay value are all more important, and I might even go so far as saying that sound is more important too. If you look for inconsistencies, you'll find them. I, for one, honestly don't care about the difference.

For the most part, the ps3 graphics are better. It looks a lot richer @Great_Ragnarok what he meant was that most multiplatform games are optimized for the ps3 ergo, M$oft's inferior system forces those of us that made a more intelligent purchase to suffer. :/

Oh yeah, the 360 version by far looks better (more detailed and crisp). And don't blame the developers for using the 360 as the main developing unit..because Sony should've considered that before moving along with Cell technology which really isn't a necessity at this point in gaming.

I think PS3 is just not as good of a system as Xbox, but the graphics for Dragon Age do look a little better on PS3 in these screens. You can tell by looking at the sword in the second picture. But then again who cares? lol

visuals are just a tiny, TINY bit crisper on the 360 for 5 out of the 6 games they show, the textures and shadows are just cleaner, but just a little bit. during live gameplay i probably wouldnt notice a difference at all. but that's been the case about every year they do this comparison. for some reason the ps3 just cant get the textures right on multi platform games. it may not be the platforms fault at all but the developers. who knows. overall this was unnecessary since there was hardly any difference unless you flip back and forth continuously.

@wolfyrabbit shouldn't you be thanking Sony for tonning down the graphics? last time I checked Sony owned PS3 not MS. so how can you blame MS if PS3 has less than anticipated graphics? also keep in mind that sony themselves said they purposely made it harder for developers to unlock the full potential of the PS3. It's entirely Sony's fault. link>> http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10173656-17.htm

Those who are claiming there are no diffrences dont have a keen enough eye or just dont know what to look for, PS3 seems to have better lighting (not contrast) and smoother textures all in all... but its certainly close. It would have to be a close win by PS3 imo

i say ps3 looks a bit better and more defined, on some screens though it did look a bit blurrier on far off stuff, but overall id say ps3 wins by just a tiny bit. This just shows that developers are finally getting the hang of the ps3, i wouldnt be surprisched if in a year or two the ps3 version is much better.
