Xbox Creator Says Don Mattrick Had Little Faith In The Console

Never say never.

Microsoft, founded by Bill Gates, was--and still is--a hardware and software developer and distributor. Largely known for its Microsoft Suite of tools, the company ventured into the nascent gaming scene in 2001 with its Xbox home console. While it went on to sell a total of 24 million worldwide, former Microsoft senior vice president Don Mattrick apparently didn't fully believe in the hardware.

According to a tweet posted by original Xbox creator Seamus Blackley, Mattrick "nearly blocked" Blackley "from addressing the company" when he visited EA Canada (where Mattrick was working at the time) to talk about the first Xbox. Blackley, who was hired by Microsoft in February 1999, saw Sony's PlayStation introduction in the same year and came up with a console proposal for Microsoft: the original Xbox.

Now Playing: Free Xbox One And Xbox 360 Games With Gold For March 2019 Announced

While Bill Gates approved the idea, Mattrick didn't seem to buy in. As tweeted by Blackley, Mattrick "didn't believe it was possible" and "it was tense," Blackley explained. He didn't go into further detail, other than replying "Yes" to a Twitter user praising Phil Spencer, who is currently heading up Microsoft's Xbox division.

Mattrick had a storied history in the games industry. After kicking his career off in the '80s, he began gaining traction in the early 2000s after joining Electronic Arts as the company's president of worldwide studios. Mattrick left EA in February 2007 to join Microsoft as one of the top bosses of the Xbox division. It was a notable move considering what he apparently said about Xbox years prior. At Xbox, Mattrick served as senior vice president, overseeing the Xbox 360 and PC divisions. He remained at Microsoft, jumping between roles throughout his tenure, until July 2013, two months after the company's Xbox One reveal. In the same month, Mattrick left Microsoft and joined Zynga as the company's CEO, where he stayed until his swift resignation from the San Francisco-based mobile game developer in April 2015.

Phil Spencer, who started at as an intern at Microsoft in 1988, gained his first prominent role at Microsoft as the general manager of Microsoft Game Studios EMEA. After working there for nearly 30 years, Spencer became Microsoft's executive vice president of gaming in 2017.

After the disastrous XB1 reveal at e3, he "left" MS to join Zynga as CEO. After that disastrous stint, he resigned two years later.

To me it just seems the guy is damaged goods right now.

He is a huge reason why the Xbox One started out rough. So glad Phil is at the helm.

@soliaired50: The last time I looked, he wasn't anywhere and had a resume on LinkedIn, lol. The guy single handedly caused so much irreversible damage to both MS and Zynga that I don't think anyone would want him as an executive in their company.

It almost appears like he's purposefully sabotaging from within for the company he's at's competition. But being unlikely, he really must be THAT dumb, lol.

He came from EA. I wonder if they'll take him back. He'd fit right in around there now.

Microsoft has a history of hiring turds. Mattrick was another in a long list. They have a small minority of genius who are constantly held back by MBA types.

Don even tried to wreck what the Xbox brand achieved. I can't believe he tried you know what. Suits are so disconnected from customers.

The guy wrecked everything that MS built with the original XBOX because it had loads of 1st and 3rd party companies wanting to come over and make games that was easy because it used a Windows Kernal system and was basically a PC in a box with no upgrade path. Its sold and made some great franchises like Halo and Forza until Phil Spencer relied on these 2 and then Gears for 360 and X1 because Don had killed off any 1st party and a lot of 3rd devs from it's console division.

Phil is a joke he hasn't listened to Xbox fans at all the 360 was dying slowly and the decent games where on decline Don showed a console which was opposite of what fans wanted they just wanted a new better more powerful gaming console not a media center system. Price was a joke and they didn't even learn after Sony's PS3 announcement but still wanted $500 for it

@Dav_id83: Phil is a joke? I play on a gaming PC and PS4 but you're clearly trolling? He's a good guy, and Microsoft is obviously still recovering from the Don. Gaming studios don't make masterpieces overnight, the next wave of AAA Xbox games wouldn't have started development until late 2017 if we're going off of when Phil was promoted. So if the average cycle of game development is 3 years, 2020 is when we should get a look at Xbox's new line up. I hope Xbox gets their shit together because the industry as a whole suffers when one is failing. I mean shit, Nintendo didn't figure it out till 2017 and Valve has their thumb jammed up their asses chasing trends like cards, MOBA's, and BR's. See my point? Do you think Sony's masterpiece's like God of War and Horizon had zero effect on Xbox? If Xbox doesn't bounce back it might be Sony you see making mistakes, like telling users to work two jobs to afford a $600 console.

It's obvious he had no faith in the console. He did everything he could to kill it when he was put in charge of Xbox. The things he did are why the console is limping by to this day...

Closing all of MS's established first party studios in favor of timed 3rd party exclusives, wanting to put an always-onine webcam in peoples' homes until the backlash got so bad, making it more of a cable box than a game console, forcing Kinect as the primary functionality when nobody wanted it after the 360's, ect...

The guy was literally a wrecking ball through the Xbox brand and undid 20 years of building quality gaming studios that were in MS's portfolio. And after he was forced out of MS, then went on to wreak havoc at Zynga. And he WAS asked to resign from MS. He didn't just find a job at Zynga and left.

I'm curious WHY he was put in charge of the Xbox division being he wanted it to fail so badly, and more so, who let him close down all of MS's studios? That affected the PC market as well as Xbox. This is the what people mean when the say that big corporations are out of touch and do things ass backwards. Putting Mattrick in that role was the worst thing to happen to MS's entire gaming division.

As a gamer, there is nothing better than CHOICE. I'm fortunate enough to play on any platform I choose. I've never understood the the level of hatred that competing consoles have created. Some fans have some real insecurities and emotional issues that plague this industry. It makes some sports rivalries pale in comparison. Whether XBOX is your platform of choice or not, you simply can't ignore what Phil Spencer has done in the past few years. Knowing that he started as an intern makes perfect sense. Don was a corporate shill, whereas Phil was and always has been a fan/gamer/consumer. He's a tremendous leader and I think this next generation of gaming/consoles etc... is going to be the best ever. There has never been a better time to game whether your exclusive to Playstation-Xbox-Nintendo-PC.

Also........ How big of an idiot is Don Mattrick? LOL

@frizzkills: Console rivalries go all the way back to the Nintendo NES and the Sega Master System. I remember arguing on the school bus that the NES was better than Sega's Master System.

For some reason it has continued on and gotten worse.

As someone who has been gaming since the early days of video games, I have never sworn allegiance to only one console or brand. At the same time, I was really impressed when I got the original Xbox and my loyalty to it and the 360 was strong. When Mattrick did his E3 Xbox One reveal, he was saying "screw you" to me and all of Xboxs loyal fans. I instantly made PlayStation my focus after that. I still feel Microsoft has the best console, controllers and online service. I got a One a while ago, but have had trouble making it my #1 console again... Not having a strong library like the PS4 doesn't help though. I blame most of the failings on Mattrick though, so they are slowly winning me back more and more...

Mattrick is a serial failure and quitter. I'm not too surprised, he's unable to see past his own agenda.

I don't have much faith in it either, since you've shown you are unable to make quality games for it.

@freeryu: Still waiting on an exclusive RPG to justify purchasing their console. 360 had many. Xbox One doesn't have a SINGLE ONE.

@freeryu: I mean, if it was a good game. I bought a 360 for Lost Odyssey. I've bought all consoles for a particularly good game. But there's nothing worth playing on an Xbox now that can't be played on my PC. Their library has failed.

@Thanatos2k: Okay so you'd never buy an Xbox anyways because you'd just get the game on PC.

still the best console. 4 controllers. tons of split screen games. proper single player games, even the crappy ones like alias or project snowblind are masterpieces compared to many currwnt microtransaction hells and the moddability to the extreme. explains perfectly why mattrick helmed xbone to its doom

Thank you Mr. Mattrick for helping the PS4 be #1

I still remember the day the original Xbox was announced. Was sitting on the porch drinking a Bud when my friend Billy drove up in his pickup truck and told me the news. I got out of my chair, told him to hold my beer, then walked inside. Been posting in Xbox articles ever since.
