Xbox Creator Says Don Mattrick Had Little Faith In The Console

Never say never.

Microsoft, founded by Bill Gates, was--and still is--a hardware and software developer and distributor. Largely known for its Microsoft Suite of tools, the company ventured into the nascent gaming scene in 2001 with its Xbox home console. While it went on to sell a total of 24 million worldwide, former Microsoft senior vice president Don Mattrick apparently didn't fully believe in the hardware.

According to a tweet posted by original Xbox creator Seamus Blackley, Mattrick "nearly blocked" Blackley "from addressing the company" when he visited EA Canada (where Mattrick was working at the time) to talk about the first Xbox. Blackley, who was hired by Microsoft in February 1999, saw Sony's PlayStation introduction in the same year and came up with a console proposal for Microsoft: the original Xbox.

While Bill Gates approved the idea, Mattrick didn't seem to buy in. As tweeted by Blackley, Mattrick "didn't believe it was possible" and "it was tense," Blackley explained. He didn't go into further detail, other than replying "Yes" to a Twitter user praising Phil Spencer, who is currently heading up Microsoft's Xbox division.

Mattrick had a storied history in the games industry. After kicking his career off in the '80s, he began gaining traction in the early 2000s after joining Electronic Arts as the company's president of worldwide studios. Mattrick left EA in February 2007 to join Microsoft as one of the top bosses of the Xbox division. It was a notable move considering what he apparently said about Xbox years prior. At Xbox, Mattrick served as senior vice president, overseeing the Xbox 360 and PC divisions. He remained at Microsoft, jumping between roles throughout his tenure, until July 2013, two months after the company's Xbox One reveal. In the same month, Mattrick left Microsoft and joined Zynga as the company's CEO, where he stayed until his swift resignation from the San Francisco-based mobile game developer in April 2015.

Phil Spencer, who started at as an intern at Microsoft in 1988, gained his first prominent role at Microsoft as the general manager of Microsoft Game Studios EMEA. After working there for nearly 30 years, Spencer became Microsoft's executive vice president of gaming in 2017.

Don Mattrick is pure garbage.
Phil Spencer is the hero we don't deserve.

I can't wait to see all the work he's been doing the last couple years come to fruition for the neXtBOX

@skyhighgam3r: People were saying that years ago, but people are still making excuses for Phil the Liar.

The work came to fruition. State of Decay, Crackdown, Sea of Thieves. All garbage. That's what you get with Phil.

But surely...in a few more years!

@Thanatos2k: Except that Phil Spencer didn't assume his current role until 2017. He's been high up for a while, but it's only as of 2017 the he only answers to Microsoft's CEO. He has full control now. This is, relatively speaking, very recent.

Battletoads is undoubtedly the first thing to really surface from that - god knows he has wanted to see that happen for a long time. The studio acquisitions are another result - and we wont see what comes of their work for some time.

@skyhighgam3r: Fraudulent information. Spencer was promoted to the HEAD of the Xbox division in 2014 following Mattrick's departure. He got a title promotion in 2017, that's all. He had full control of Xbox and their games 5 years ago. His results speak for themselves.

Obviously Don Mattrick didn't care at all...and instead he sabotaged the Xbox One by approving (and possibly giving) all sorts of anti-consumer ideas that eventually killed the Xbox One on arrival..... And then he walked away like nothing.

Don Mattrick proves to each and every one of us that the one week left at a job "I stopped caring about any of this" mentality is alive and strong even at the upper echelons of businesses.

"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Xbox 360."
One week left at the company. This just shines an even bigger light on, exactly, what was going on with his brain processes.
He never actually cared about the Xbox as a whole. So when he pushed his "I stopped caring" button, he showed his true colors.

@vilified_signals: Oh why did you have to reopen that wound. I hope video game historians look back on that moment as one of the most damning for the Xbox One. Between the controversy over the design and that line about connectivity, things didn't look good for XONE at the start. I do personally think many current PS4 owners jumped the gun in "upgrading" to a PS4 in the first year it was released. I feel that even more so for the people that traded in an X360 and a hefty library of games for a PS4 back then. The two are more comparable than ever, and I can't help but wonder how things would have been if the Xbox One would have launched with the shape it is in today if PS4 would still have such a significant lead.

@Blade_Runner_07: Not really sure about that. Lack of first party games is kind of a big deal lol.
All I do know is that when Sony gets successful they get arrogant.

Look at what happened with the PS3 reveal. Boos and all. It's why it took the PS3 all those years to catch back up.
The PS3 reveal was fresh off their PS2 sales boom. They became super humble because of it... But they went too safe.

I really hope they don't go super arrogant with their PS5 reveal. I really hope they don't play it super safe. I hope Sony decides it's in their best interest to join hands with Nintendo and Xbox and give us a gaming utopia.

But I will doubt that.

Don Mattrick always came over to me like he hated Xbox (and gaming in general) and did everything in his power to destroy it.

He killed off a bunch of Microsoft Developers and just made the gaming industry a worse place alltogether.

To be honest,Don Mattrick was only the face on the stage as the whole team behind Xbox One was ok with the idea and policies.

Still,i wouldnt trust Don to walk my dog and bring it safe home ?

@sladakrobot: True. The fish stinks from the head and Mattrick only got away with what he did because that was the attitude he was able to adopt in working for the company at that time. Microsoft was kinda where Sony is right now. They didn't give a shit about the consumer because they didn't need to due to such a massive install base.

It was foolish not to think that the introduction of a new console generation wouldn't have that install base asking whether or not it was viable to keep buying products from a company that wanted to control how you consumed media because they had the impression you had already said yes to all this in the first place. All the PS4 needed to promise to be was a natural continuation of the brand. Weird though that XONE today feels more like a successor to X360 than PS4 ever has to the PS3.

He Who Must Not Be Named left Microsoft for a reason. He came very close to destroying the Xbox brand for good so it's not surprising he wasn't too excited about the console market from the beginning. He almost destroyed Zynga as well. He has the reverse Midas touch. Everything he touches turns to crap.

I wish it were Spencer who got that role instead of Mattrick back in 07, xbox would probably be in a much healthier state right now.

@fullyskully: You mean back then. Yes, compared to PS4 it's not doing so great, but compared to what Xbox was five years ago, it's the best it has ever been. Credit where credit is due. If Xbox One would have launched in the state it's in today, exclusives be damned, these consoles would be a helluva lot closer in sales that they currently are.

@fullyskully: its yet to be proven what Phil has done. Outside of backwards compatibility and the one x, the effects of whatever Phil is doing have not been seen yet. Sea of Thieves, terrible at launch. State of Decay 2, Dud. Halo 5, no split screen. Gears 4, pretty mediocre. Crackdown 3, terrible game even after the delays, and quantum break- trashed in reviews. Fable studio, closed it and doesn't even give them a chance to make another mainline fable game first to get back on the charts. Scalebound, cancels it. Within months of the one x launching, announces they have another system projected for 2020/21 time frame. Thus killing off a lot of their sales of the one x. I was considering buying one then decided not to when I saw they are making another system. Its a waste of money at this point. Game pass, launched to pretty much give everyone day 1 access for 15 bucks to try their mediocre games and realize its terrible then unsub, thus further hurting their sales. At this point the only glowing thing about xbox its its third party titles through gamepass... and even that is lackluster. The majority of the games on it are old games that we all beat years ago with the occasional newer one peppered in. Its not nearly as great as people make it out to be.

So, can you tell me again, beyond 360 backwards compatibility, what exactly Phil has done for this company since taking over for Mattick? Hes scrambled to get more first party studios in the past year because hes just now realizing that he hasn't done crap for exclusives since he took over in 2013. In addition, he is further burying the xbox brand by making every xbox exclusive also available on PC, thus making the brand of xbox a joke to begin with. Almost like they don't believe in the brand power of their own system and need the help from PC. What are the best xbox exclusive games and most unique on the system since launching? Sunset overdrive (exclusivity agreement launched under Mattick). Killer instinct, great game, development green lit by Mattick, and gears 4 while not the best game ever was a good comeback for the series and would have also been initially greenlit by Mattick.........

Mattick, during the 360 period, had almost as many exclusives and good games as ps3. Say what you will about him, he at least knew how to build the 360s brand and recognition, something that Phil has so far failed terribly at.

The bottomline is that the state that xbox is in now is BECAUSE OF SPENCER, he never righted the ship, he just took over for someone that accidentally tanked the company with a poor always online idea... its hard to look bad when the only place to go is up since your sales started so poorly. That doesn't mean that what hes done has had any meaningful impact beyond 360 backwards compatibility, which is literally the only thing that I use the system for now.

@darkhunterix: Probably more like Nadella knows what a turd W10 is and has forced Xbox division to prop it up. Everybody answers to somebody, even Phil.

Also, SoD2 is great. Maybe a little buggy, but zombie fans like it. I'd say the market for zombie games has perhaps shrunk a bit in recent years, just look at Dying Light 2 comments and you'll notice some burnout, but for the zombie lovers the game has been a boon.

@darkhunterix: Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's been perfect. I am also very disappointed in the lack of first party content compared to PS4, still pissed that they closed down Lionhead. I'll give credit to Don for KI and Sunset Overdrive, but that's about all he did positive for the XB1. Besides two titles, all I saw from Don was the downfall of Rare, Kinect, ruining Halo and Gears, and a very anti consumer XB1... then he left it in that state instead of fixing it. Phil had to come in and reverse all the anti consumer stuff, thankfully got rid of Kinect, created the 1X to help fix the power gap, and in 2017 he became the head of gaming, not just xbox, and he acquired a bunch of studios and created one to hopefully fix the first party content problem. I personally love the fact that he's pushing PC gaming now and I think GP is amazing value, that's subjective though, as are the games we've gotten. For example I know the general public doesn't care for SoT, but it's a very niche game and Rare at least got to make what they wanted to instead of being forced to make Kinect Sports and avatar clothes.

So I guess to summarize, Phil in my opinion is definitely not perfect but I still much prefer him over Don.

By the way in the case of Gears 4 (which I loved), I don't believe Don had anything to do with it. He created Black Tusk to work on a mysterious IP but when the Gears IP was acquired from Epic, Phil needed a studio to continue the franchise. Since they didn't have very many at the time he asked Black Tusk if they wanted to continue their project or become the Gears guys and now we have The Coalition. I hope they at one point return to it, would like to see what it would've been.

@darkhunterix: by the way the comment above is not an attack at you but rather my disappointment in the xbox's brand recognition since Phil took over. The 360 just had so many more interesting IPS created and exclusives to the point that the xone is just pathetic at this point. It is imo the worst system in the history of gaming for brand recognition. I loved my 360 when i had it, because there were so many good first party titles that I could be proud of owning and believing in. With the xone, I am legit embarrassed to even own this system. Its literally the laughing stock of everyone I know. If it wasn't for gears I would have never bought it in the first place. The next xbox really needs to have a better lineup to redeem their selves or I won't be purchasing it.

He can't even use the timing of when he became president as an excuse anymore. its been nearly 6 years, yes 6 years since Phil took over. He could have had two entire 3 year waves of development and good games to spit out during his tenure and we have received nothing but terrible first party games in that time. Meanwhile, sony has been spitting out AAA high rated first party titles like candy from a candy machine and they still are not done yet!
