Xbox Live suffers holiday hangover

Microsoft's online gaming service ends 2007 with more than a week of on-again, off-again outages.

'Twas the night before Christmas when Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb updated his blog with the first of numerous bulletins about holiday hang-ups for Microsoft's online gaming service. Xbox 360 owners found the service suffering frequent and varied problems, from issues with signing in to problems in recovering accounts.

On December 29, Hryb updated his blog and said that "record numbers of new members signing up for Xbox Live and record numbers of players online" had contributed to the issues.

"While the service was never completely offline, problems like this are not acceptable," Hryb wrote. "The entire Live team has been working day and night to ensure that you can have a great Live experience. While we're not done yet, I wanted to let you know that things are getting better each hour and that no one on the team is going anywhere until the job is done."

A number of users reported continuing issues with the service today, from lengthy delays in performing basic Xbox Live functions to persisting matchmaking troubles. The last word about the outages from Hryb came in a Twitter post on his blog yesterday with an acknowledgement that things were still not working properly, but "appeared to be getting better."

A follow-up Twitter post this morning didn't directly address the Xbox Live problems, but did imply "As you can imagine, today is a flurry of meetings/activity etc." A Microsoft representative did not return GameSpot's request for comment on the issue or what, if any, actions will be taken to compensate Xbox Live Gold subscribers for the pay service's downtime.

i really appreciate microsoft for all this hard work they are doing because just like 09 said so many people said fix it now and having absoulotley no respect for a company thats working 24/7 to fix these problems. and another thing is the ps3 fanboys they keep laughing now look ms fanboys you pay for your live and you are still getting problems well i have four things to say to them 1.yes,we are paying but at least we are paying for something thats incredibly good and will crush "PSN" anytime 2.yes,live is sometimes going down but its because we have more and more users just like 09 said the people on PSN dont even reach a million 3.at least we dont have lag like PSN has 4.at least microsoft works hard to give us games like gears of war and halo3 ,but all that sony does is being cocky to luanching its console to price of 500$!!!! so my point is if you dont love the company at least show some respect.

It's too bad there wasn't better anticipation but even then LIVE is a complicated entity and problems are bound to happen. The timing, over the holidays, is unfortunate though. Maybe some free MS points would heal some wounds.

Yeah I noticed CoD4 was REALLY slow. I'm sure that and Halo 3 are probably the worst for Live right now. I've been playing Rock Band though, so it doesn't affect that.. the marketplace runs just as fast though, as I've been buying new songs a lot.

"record numbers of new members signing up for Xbox Live and record numbers of players online" had contributed to the issues. so they weren't confidant that this many people (whatever the record # was) would actually sign up for the service, therefore they don't have the proper servers running LIVE? you make me laugh m$...

@ skirlnik, You do bring up a valid point but the only reason that XBL is having problems at all is because there are SO, MANY, PEOPLE!!! I mean if PSN had maybe even a tenth you guys would probably be having the same issue's here but obviously, you don't because the PS3 sucks as of now. maybe toward the end of this year they can see a small speckle of light shine on them when the rest is shining on the 360 and Wii. lol

I love how Xbots are still trying to take this opportunity to diss PSN. Not as many subscribers? Does that mean I have trouble finding a game online? Oh wait - nope!

@ Gryfin29, That was hilarious dude but so true at the same time. The only games that look good for the PS3 this year is MGS4, Killzone 2 and God Of War 3 and thats it. Most likely GOW 3 will be out in 2009 and Killzone as well but most likely MGS4 will be out this year. thats it. See the 360's first alone released AAA titles like GRAW, Oblivion, R6V and Gears Of War. The PS3's first year was nothing but disappointments and constant system flops left and right. Its ok Sony fanboys, the death of system is almost over. shhhh, don't cry, is was basically imminent. (lol)

I had a little bit of problems on Christmas Afternoon. Mostly the game was so jumpy that I couldn't play it. i realized that was probably because of a bunch of new people playing COD4. I got off the Xbox and went onto my computer (or watched TV). I found out later my DSL connection was going as fast as it should have been. After I reset it, I have been find most of the week. (It has been slow on Live Marketplace, but I didn't sit around waiting for that).

The fact is here that MS is working hard to make up for the lost time. Think about how they feel, the fact that so many people are ragging on them and demanding it be fixed in a day or two shows arrogance. Most people who say "fix it now" and nothing else shows that they don't understand anything. The fact is is that XBL has more than 8 million Live subscribers and more on the way thanks to the holidays. How many does PSN have? I doubt even close to a million. (LOL!) Plus the fact that MS puts all their extra time into things like providing DLC and demos as fast as they can and that they can offer DLC 3 to 4 times faster than the PS3's online proves they are better. Sony's online may be free, but they put almost no effort into it like MS does into theirs. People need to realize that compensation is asking to much. Like i've said in previous posts is that They are working around the clock to fix this problem and that means giving up their free time as well as time with their family that we are fortunate to have. STOP PLAYING ONLINE SO MUCH AND FRIGGIN' PLAY THE GAMES STORY MODE FOR CHRIST'S SAKES!!! Learn about the game instead of just playing it.

I've had a lot of problems connecting to live lately, but the odd thing is when i start a game, it connects, when i end teh game, it disconnects, and no movie access or download access for 2 weeks now. 2 WEEEKS. Yes, tey are fixing it, and i'm glad they are, but thats like half of my monthly payment wasted on a non working service and THAT is why compensation is recommended. How about one free month or half price for one month. It's only fair. Otherwise, when it's working, it's awesome! Blows PS3 serivice out of the water...

I wasn't happy about this, microsoft should have been prepared for a barrage of new people signing up for xbox live.... I mean, we do pay for this service, and any little amount of inactivity is kind of annoying... Im still getting problems today, but it is getting better, I did expect alot of issues but it was far worse than I precieved...

This year will be exactly the same as last year Xbox 360 will shine and the PS3 will flop because every big game comin out for PS3 is comin out for the Xbox ,and this is one of the first issues xbox has had and the PS3 is havin so many problems why cant they just stick with one model

I am not sure what I like more about PSN... the fact that there are only 5 things to download in there store or the fact that every time I turn on my PS3 I have to sit through a 45 minute update................ xbox live is worth $100 a year compared to Sony's free, junky service. mangojuiceboy... you are ripping on Live, but your the fool that bought an HD DVD drive for your Xbox... PS3 for games may be bad, but Blu Ray is definitely the future

Why are people here still whining? Jesus Christ man, seriously! Why does everyone here think they deserve some kind of special compensation for whats going on? Most of the retards in this room don't even realize that MS is working around the clock, giving up all of their time to fix the problems and such so you little *****es can stop whining. @ Kiaininja, You know, I'm getting real sick of you PS3 fanboys running your mouth, acting like your system's better when its not. It truly isn't. The reason for all the problems with live has been stated that there were so many NEW live subscribers than the system can handle, meaning that the fan base of the 360 grew even larger thanks to the holidays. In one years time of the 360's release, The 360 had a huge array of AAA titles that sold millions. In the PS3's first year - 1. Constant Model changes and getting rid of models, 2. No good games, 3. Disappointing push backs because the companies are lazy, 4. Late game releases. I mean seriously, do you really want me to go any further, I think not. So basically all I'm saying is is that when you guys actually get a good internet service and some actually mildly decent games, then maybe you can boast just a little, but until then, keep your mouths shut.

Last post before I go play some xbox... To all who have issues with my opinions or who's feelings I have so easily hurt... Arrogant? No. Paid by M$? Again, No. An adult that knows there are much worse things that can happen in life, than my $50 dollar a year XBL account not working for a week? Yes. Grow up children, you could be sleeping in a cardboard box, in the dead of winter, here in Minnesota, but you go ahead and just keep screaming about the injustice of your live account not working for a week.

I see that over 60% of the people here still whining about downtime for Live. Go do something else for godsakes. Clean your bathroom. Dust your house; whatever. It's not like it's the end of the world, and M$ is going to jump to a all-in-one peanut solution anytime soon. Network congestion like this takes time to resolve because you're all loggin' in at the same time!

DonutTrooper has a really good point... BUT, to say Microsoft isn't working the angle they've been boasting about since day is a lot of fibbin. Online gaming is what they want to offer and the Live service with all its videos and arcade games makes for a nice alternative. I'm not saying I totally support online only gaming, but I'm definently happy to see all the success its had for Microsoft in the console world. Take away that online element and we got problems! Not only would DL content be a short lived thought, but most of the games that are available and soon to be on shelf are mostly structured for Live action... not a good place to be no matter how much a early jump you got on the competition

i agree with whoever said that if hanging out on Live all weekend is all you do... you need a life. I love playing on Live but it's not the only thing I do to release the stress that i have from work. you lazy SOB's need to get a job or a hobby and not just zombie out on Live or video games in general. better yet, quit being a geek and get a girlfriend to pass the time with instead of holding a controller in your hand for 8 hours. also, for those complaining that this should never happen: it's real the world, shhhh like this happens and not just to MS. i am not so worried about Live being down as much as I'm worried some databank in LA will get hacked and a haxor will be able to get my credit information. now that, is a serious problem... Live being down, not so much. so all you crying and whining need to grow up. if you want something to complain about complain about this: we, the USA, are ranked 16th in the WORLD in broadband output availability. South Korea is number one in the world because citizens can get 64Mbps+ broadband delivered to thier homes. In the USA the highest, non-trunk, is just over 8Mbps. So, instead of complaining about Live being down complain to your Congressman that the Baby Bell's are doing a dis-service to us by not allowing greater broadband output speeds. There are way more important thing's to complain about that effect everyone, Live is not one of the issues.

I was worried that both my consoles had something wrong with them! While its annoying, its an understandable growing pain and as long as its resolved soon I am fine with it, I have had no issue downloading patches for any games I bought over the Holidays and I can live without a week or so of live,

A company of such size, not realizing that their own network can't hold this amount of customers, should either hire someone to do some load-testing or get out of the industry. What would have happened if the Xbox would have actually sold a lot of consoles? This is as bad or worse than Ninny not thinking they would actually sell their Wii's and have two Christmas' of hardware shortages.

I work customer service for an internet service provider, so I know about how things like these can go. When there is a big outage affecting a lot of people for a long time, don't expect a credit or refund for down time right away, especially while the issues are still occurring. Microsoft is going to wait till they have the issues cleared up before they decide what to do about compensation. It would be dumb for them to compensate anybody before they have the issues fixed, so people should wait it out instead of just dropping the service. If you just drop the service, you definetly won't get any compensation. I hate you people that think that yelling at customer service reps and threatening to cancel your service will get you better service. Most customer service reps aren't paid enough to care whether you drop their service or not. But someone who acts nice and not like a baby will get a lot better service as the customer service rep will want to help that person. Finally, why in the world would you want to waste your life getting mad about something as trivial as XBox Live going down. Who the heck cares? Find something else to do!

This is totally unacceptable. MS needs to stop being reactive and become proactive. They should have know that with all the consoles sold and with the upcoming holiday, that a lot of people would be online. My son doesn't go back to school until next Monday. It's not a matter of cost, the service is pretty cheap. But it is a matter of public perception and reliability. Even though the company is responding to the problem, it could have easily been avoided just like the RRD. I love my XBox but MS will lose a lot of people if it doesn't get it together.

METALZOMBIE is a Microsoft fanboy who's obviously been paid off. Or, he's an arrogant snob. Definitely the latter. Also, he plays Counterstrike. I get it now. Everyone who plays that game thinks they're higher than everyone else for some reason. Right. A war game whose mascot is some little kid. Wow. I feel bad for you. Oh wait. No I don't.

While no time is good for Live to go down and have problems, just after Christmas would have to be one of the worst times for it to happen. Lots of people want to play their new games online, and they can't.
