Xbox One Adds Two More Backward-Compatible Games

Slay some demons or pull off a heist.

The list of Xbox 360 games that can be played on Xbox One grows a little further today, with two new games being added.

No Caption Provided

Doom 3: BFG Edition and Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine are both now backward compatible on Xbox One, Microsoft's Major Nelson announced on Twitter today. BFG Edition is the enhanced version of Doom 3 released for Xbox 360 (as well as PS3 and PC) in 2012. Monaco, meanwhile, is a stealth heist game with support for four player co-op.

As with other backward-compatible games, if you own or purchase a digital copy of either game, it'll now show in up in the "Ready to Download" list of the Xbox One's My Games and Apps area. Physical copies can be popped into the system's disc drive and, following a small download, can be played just like any other game.

This isn't the first addition to the backward-compatible list this week, as several games were added on April 12. You can see the full list of Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One here.

please apply a correction, Doom 3 IS NOT available digitally, it is disc only backwards compatibility

this baffles me the publisher will do this and not provide online store with digital option, after all there's money to be made and they're just letting it slip through their fingers, this is just pushing sales of used games, it's not like this will cost extra to certify as the game was already made available on Xbox 360, it's not as if this will cost them anything more than industry standard 30/70 revenue splits which is easier to do through digital sales than paying out of pocket in physical publishing... so yeah, baffling, why no digital version?

@shortythepimp: All backward compatible games have multiplayer where applicable and it works. There just aren't many people playing Doom 3 online and I don't believe there ever were.

Monaco was a strangely fun little game... It was more like a puzzle-action game than stealth, per se. Pictures don't really do it justice.

Doom3 BFG was a VERY good game. Doubt I'll have time to replay it before Doom[4], but nice to know that I have the option.

I wish Microsoft still supported their original xbox lineup like Sony does for the ps1 and the ps2. Is there a working emulator for the original xbox yet?

@camou504: There isn't, unfortunately. However, you can buy an original Xbox for next to nothing these days. I got one for €10 (around $11) a few years ago.

@i_am_kesmonkey: Microsoft will since the original Xbox had an emulator on Xbox 360. Microsoft just needs to implement the Original Xbox emulator on Xbox One using the original Xbox emulator from Xbox 360.

@i_am_kesmonkey: I did that just so I could play Panzer Dragoon Orta. Would love to just be able to play it on my X1 though and not have to use those horrible wired pads.

@lamprey263: I really wish Sega would just update all the Panzer games and release them as one package. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

@emptycow718: Yeah I can understand that. The 360 pad was almost perfect. I personally don't like the position of the D pad on the X1 controller. Now the DS4 on the other hand is fantastic. I prefer it overall except for maybe shooters where the X1 pad really shines.

Yes, been waiting for BFG as I haven't quite finished it yet. The less I have to search for my 360 controller and put in fresh batteries when I get the urge to play a 360 game the better. Yeah, I can be pretty lazy at times.

Stoked to see Doom 3: BFG Edition make it to backward compatibility, though I'm bummed it never saw a digital release on X360. I hope that changes. Incidentally, it looks like Rage on X360 never got a digital release either, oddly.

@BigPrimeNumbers: With regard to Rage, it's a multi-disc game. AFAIK, there are no multi-disc Games on Demand games.

@i_am_kesmonkey: Oh wow, I didn't realise that. Such a shortcoming seems crazy since they could just package the whole game into one big download, and the fact that you can install multiple disc games to your console and leave the first disc in the drive to play the game. Bummer. Still weird about Doom 3: BFG Edition though!

@i_am_kesmonkey: Oh yeah -- it was like 3 discs... Gorgeous, responsive game -- excellent combat. John Goodman as an early NPC... I enjoyed it.

After playing halo reach and gears of war 3, I feel like I'm playing inferior versions since so many games seem to have framerate issues that are only happening on x1

@AssaultMonkey9: Reach was known to have major issues

But now it's fixed, frame rates aren't as bad as before

@AssaultMonkey9: I see it a lot on Gears 3 when playing horde on Sandbar. The higher the waves get the more unstable it becomes. Killing enemies helps it though so for me its playable.

@AssaultMonkey9: I'm playing through Gears 3 now on the X1. To be honest I haven't really noticed the frame rate issues. They are there, but they're not a significant problem. Know what you mean though, the actual 360 version works better.

@AssaultMonkey9: The vast majority of games do not have frame-rate issues. Having just played through the first hour of the game, I can say that it appears that Doom 3 BFG runs perfectly.

@AssaultMonkey9: It is only a few games that have framerate issues, and they are the ones that are more graphic intensive like the two you mention. This is an issue that Microsoft is aware of and working on a solution - whether they find it though is another matter. It is still an impressive engineering feat that they even got it to work as well as it has to begin with.
