Xbox One Adds Two More Backward-Compatible Games

Slay some demons or pull off a heist.

The list of Xbox 360 games that can be played on Xbox One grows a little further today, with two new games being added.

No Caption Provided

Doom 3: BFG Edition and Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine are both now backward compatible on Xbox One, Microsoft's Major Nelson announced on Twitter today. BFG Edition is the enhanced version of Doom 3 released for Xbox 360 (as well as PS3 and PC) in 2012. Monaco, meanwhile, is a stealth heist game with support for four player co-op.

As with other backward-compatible games, if you own or purchase a digital copy of either game, it'll now show in up in the "Ready to Download" list of the Xbox One's My Games and Apps area. Physical copies can be popped into the system's disc drive and, following a small download, can be played just like any other game.

This isn't the first addition to the backward-compatible list this week, as several games were added on April 12. You can see the full list of Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One here.

@hotwog21: It doesn't matter what you call it. It's still the ability to play 360 games on XB1. A joke? How so?

@hotwog21: I'd really like to hear your lame reason why you think it isn't as you obviously lack the technical knowledge to understand why it is. So enlighten us with your "knowledge" as to why you think this isn't "true" backward compatibility so I can tear apart your argument with the facts.

It works on a system it was never designed to run for and uses the original code to accomplish it - that is backwards compatibility by definition.

@dlCHIEF58: i tried call of duty 4 and it didnt work, then i tried forza 2, that didn work either. doesnt sound backward compatible to me.

"someday" completely backward compatible is totally different to backwards compatible now :) and or backwards compatible, but!..

nice argument little kid, we should do this again sometime xo

@hotwog21: And there is a difference between "complete" backward compatibility and "true" backward compatibility which is what you said. Your attack is a straw man argument. But I see you can't be bothered to understand WHY only select titles are available now - and that is mostly due to licensing because of the way Microsoft had to implement the feature (i.e. - required redistribution of original game code on a system it was never licensed to be released on due to the basic design of the console that can't run games from the optical drive). That is the problem with you KIDS nowadays, you can't be bothered learning the facts.

And in regards to your lame attempt at insulting... HAH! I am probably old enough to be your grandfather as I have been around since the dawn of both home computers and home consoles.

@dlCHIEF58: 1. keep hiding behind your complicated merry go round of finger pointing :) and 2. if youve been round that long you wouldnt be supporting all these greedy business models, DLC, season passes, ingame currency, microtransactions etc.

so run along kid, you've got an update to fix your broken game that will eventually get fixed in the near future of patches and fixes, oh and i think the next round of DLC is ready (withheld content) for downloading for your favorite game.

run along.

@hotwog21: And you evidently aren't old enough to construct a valid, intelligent rebuttal for my statement or defense of your blanket statement. And I am old enough to NOT blindly bash every model you throw out there to deflect from the point at hand - none of those things are bad in and of themselves, it is how they are implemented. DLC is not bad if it is worth the price and adds to the game. Season passes are not bad by themselves as it goes fans of the games a discount if they get all the content. Microtransactions are not always bad, as long as the publisher remembers the "micro" part in the pricing, makes it non-game altering, and not necessary to progress. Making blanket statements that ALL these things are bad across the board shows your immaturity and lack of cognitive thinking. A mature mind however can differentiate between the bad models and the good ones, you seem to lack that ability to judge value or have an inflated sense of entitlement. But all this is completely beside the original point and is your lame attempt to deflect from the real topic, which is WHY you feel this isn't 'true" backward compatibility? It does let us know your level of intellectual maturity is severely lacking however.

So come back when you are ready to defend your statement with valid facts, logic, and common sense. In case your ADD kicked in, we were discussing why you think the backward compatibility on the One was not "true" backward compatibility (not complete, 'TRUE" as you said initially). I'll wait until they let you out of school, unless you have detention. KID.

@dlCHIEF58: forza 2 still not working among most other xbox 360 games so its still not backward compatible, the only thing backward here is you :) I love how much i make geniuses like you tilt. Truth hurts hey :) your so heavily invested with all your DLC and achievements, i hate to see you if your forgot your password to your account little lamb. Now run along your "update" and "free" DLC must be completed. Oh and your part of the "prisoners of hope" generation of gamers, living in hope and hype that the next update will add more games, fix more problems, and that the game will one day be complete (what older gamers used to play, you know? tested and finished games but a kid like you never played those games)

but seriously run along my little "DLC baby" generation of gamers :)

@hotwog21: And yet you STILL cannot defend your initial statement that this is not "true" backward compatibility. Trying to deflect to another subject and resorting to unrelated childish insults is NOT explaining or defending your initial faulty statement. I already addressed WHY the specific examples are not working YET, as well as why they may never work (i.e. licensing and developer permission). Yet you once again cannot be bothered with facts that counter your flawed statement

You are a sad little boy. Stay in school, you obviously need it. You can knock off the kid stuff already as I said I am more than likely old enough to be your grandfather (and have had more education than you would get in 3 of your lifetimes), especially since you are acting like an 11 year old.

@dlCHIEF58: Im happy to keep destroying you, my new favorite DLC baby, so i'll repeat myself

i put call of duty 4 into my xbone and it does not work, this means its not backward compatible, try to let that sink in.

when i put in a ps1 game into my ps2, guess what, it works this means its backwards compatible, i can even plug in my ps1 controller into my ps2 amazing right?

im guessing licensing and developers permission were not inventing back then as good bullsh#%t to baffle little kids like you. *pats u on head and says there there*

and i've been on gamespot 2 years longer than you, and yes ive noticed the irony that you have the letters DLC in your account name my little innocent DLC baby :)

oh and when a ps1 game loads up, i dont need to be online, download an update, be logged into an account or any of the other rubbish things expected from DLC babys like you, u mad?

on a scale of 1 to dlC(baby)HIEF, how mad are you right now? :)

@hotwog21: So you keep up with the infantile and unrelated attempts at insults, how old are you again? I can almost guarantee I have more gray hairs than you have pubes based on your responses.

So you did make a feeble attempt at addressing what YOU feel is "true" backward compatibility, yet are also wrong on that account. You allude to hardware based BC that was used on the PS2 - why couldn't you say that from the start? However software emulation is as much a valid and "true" backward compatibility solution - hardware based of course is preferred and better (but more expensive).

Backward compatibility on the One (and 360 as well as the 2nd gen PS3s) are all true backward compatible machines, regardless of your limited (and incorrect) definition. That all play games from the previous generation running the original code, hence backward compatible by definition. I've explained WHY the route was taken for the One, your dismissal and failure to acknowledge that are just further proof of your immaturity, lack of knowledge, and overall ignorance of matters like this.

So come back when you want to have an ADULT debate that deals with facts and data, not childish insults that are unrelated to the matter at hand. I am more mature and more than old enough to ignore your attempts at deflection since you have no defense for your statement. Back in my day we'd bend a disrespectful little pube like you over our knee and give them a proper spanking (after making them pick their own switch - and the swats would be worse if you came back with one too small) - and no one would bat an eye. It takes more than a little twerp like you to get under my skin, especially when said insults aren't even close to the mark (though I do seem to have gotten under your skin since you cannot form an intelligible response without childish insults - call me when you get out of the 4th grade or can pass that competency test).

Wake me up when next gen is finally complete when it get its millionth update and patch and when i can finally put in any xbox 360 game and it works, in the mean time you just keep living in the future that your "con" sole will one day be completed after its millionth update, i like to live in the here and now, things i can touch and hold and share, want to lend me one of your digital games? oh wait :O lol DLC babys cant share games like us older gamer do :) seriously live in the here and now dude, seriously u should try it. xo.

@hotwog21: I've back-pedaled on not a single point and you have yet to address the issue at hand in an intelligent and cognitive way or without childish, pathetic and unrelated attempts at insults. I am done dealing with children (meaning you since I obviously have to point it out to someone as dense and immature as yourself). Try again when you get educated of FACTS and are not a mindless drone KID.

Your insults are pathetic and rather funny since NONE of them apply to someone of my age, so don't bother me in the least. Keep making yourself look like a tool, but I am done with your immature antics. Go back under your bridge now.

@hotwog21: Actually those "kid" comments are very flattering for this old gamer, but you're still not going to get into my pants that way. Keep them hugs and kisses to yourself as I don't swing that way. Maybe you should spend more time after school to work on your spelling and grammar so you might aspire to reach a fraction of the success I've had in my long and fruitful life.

I also have games on cassette and 5 1/4" floppy to go along with my extensive Atari and Intellivision cartridge collection - nice try KID (though not really, it was a pretty lame attempt in all honesty). I've known how to care for my games since before you were an uncomfortable itch in your daddy's crotch, but thanks anyway captain obvious. Do you also blow on them and somehow think that makes them work better?

Now I am done with you CHILD. But please go ahead and keep making a fool of yourself after this for everyone else, the whole you are digging for yourself just keeps getting deeper. It's quite amusing.

@dlCHIEF58: u said you were going to stop messaging me 10 comments back, but u secretly love the void this fills in your already "fruitful life" ur tirades are full of lies and contradiction and very entertaining for all. my DLC baby keeps coming back for more and more destruction and dismantling and eats up all the bait i keep throwing out, your "con"sole still is not backward compatible (remember the original discussion u keep back-peddling on?) the cleaver and deceitful headline says that (and gullible lambs like u defend it) but anyone thats been around for more than 10 years would know that there is always a catch. u tried to defend with the classic merry go round of finger pointing of "its licencing, its devolpers its blah blah blah" At best the "backward compatible" side of this console should be called a "classics collection thats still growing and wont be completely compatible ever" or completely compatible someday but how do we know it will? its all future speak and hype so its something we cant touch or hold but oh wait microsoft love doing it on their terms and DLC babies like u dont care they love buying consoles purely based on promises hahahhahaha the prisoner of hope generation of gamers, enjoy kid, and im looking forward to your next message further confirming your butt hurtness and accusing me of things that your biblical like cries are full of and further projecting all your insecurities and self loathing on me for all to see :) :) :) xoxo :) :) :) *pat on the head* "there there"

@dlCHIEF58:

truth burns but it will pass ;) i'll repeat myself for the 100th time Forza 2 does not work on my bone so its not backward compatible. i feel sorry for kids like you that never played a console before ps3 and 360 and all you know is being strung along for periodical updates for perceived progression, i feel sorry for so many kids like you that never got to play a finished console and a finished and tested game :) I can see your shakey little hands fire up for a reply hahaha look up a ps2 or even better a n64 and tell me how many updates they “required” XD XD and then you jump on gamespot and share your opinion without any real perspective or view of the bigger picture or even a little bit of gaming history knowledge and when i say history, im only talking 10 years but oh yeah, u were only 5 years old then or younger hahaha i dont expect you to understand any of this, just make sure your mom and dads credit card is ready for Call of Dutys DLC, thats if you havent already destroyed it on Fifa packs XD oh and and all your massive tirades just confirm where your at ;) xo All the best :) :)

@hotwog21: OK, one last time since your feeble, immature mind cannot comprehend facts and logic. I've already explained WHY that game is not backward compatible yet and that example in no way shows that this is not "true" backward compatibility. Backward compatibility BY DEFINITION is playing games from a previous system on the new one utilizing the original game code...PERIOD.

Also, I have played games longer than you have breathed air on this Earth, have more gray hairs than you have pubes, and more schooling (with degrees) than you could dream of with your limited intelligence. Your insults mean nothing since they in no way apply to me and roll off my back like water off a duck. You have a lot to learn if you want to get under someone's skin. 10 years gaming history? HAH, I was there from the beginning near 40 years ago with the Odyssey, Pong and Atari VCS. You are the one going on tirades with insults and totally unrelated BS because you cannot defend your initial statement and rely on the same argument I've already destroyed. You'd make a fine Democrat or socialist since you slander and attack what you cannot refute. You are clueless and ignorant, and no longer worth my time. You are a sad little child. So I say good day KID.

I leave you with this thought - stay in school, pay attention, and seek help from the counselors there at your junior high (and I am being generous in that assessment since you are acting like a 11 year old).

@skyhighgam3r: Well this is a good sign for that since this game never saw a digital release and the vast majority of original Xbox games never got the digital treatment on the 360. So technically it is more possible now, but licensing permission would be a much bigger headache for those (if they use the same approach as they are on the 360 games) due to the age of those games and many of the developers and publishers no longer exist. But I do hope it does happen, even if it is somewhat limited.

Well for everyone's information, Doom 3 BFG will not show up in your ready to install queue because there was no digital version of the game, it was only sold on disc. This is a good sign as it shows future releases will not be limited to only Games on Demand/digital versions (or is a sign of an impending Games on Demand version of the game to be released). It should silence some of the critics of backward compatibility, but probably won't.

@skyhighgam3r: There are also no digital releases of Mass Effect 2 or 3 on the 360, but are present on the PS3. One of the few areas PSN was ahead of Live last generation.

My guess is at the time it was released that there were still limits on the size of games released on Live. They didn't even start offering same day digital releases until fairly recently, and they were limited as the new 360 releases have slowed to a drip. Mattrick and Witten were really behind the times on a lot of the things that should have been done on the Live marketplace and alienated a lot of people in the process.

The next thing Microsoft needs to address is multi-disc games like Mass Effect 2 and 3 for backward compatibility. It is something they have been working on, but no new news about it.

@dlCHIEF58: This was a HUGE shame.

I always re-buy multi-disc games digitally so I don't have to switch them around. I HATE swapping discs.

It was one thing back in the day when halfway through the game you did it ONCE to play the other half...

But games like Mass Effect and Splinter Cell Blacklist have you doing it constantly.

@iammcgruber: No, there is no digital version for sale at all (at least not yet). A friend of mine reminded me that the Japanese version of Lego Batman also had no digital/Games on Demand version but works fine with BC so we may not see a digital version of the game (but still could happen). This being a higher profile game that was only released on disc should help quell some of the hipster haters trying to find any fault they can with the initiative as they have one less argument to fall back on now.
