Xbox One Getting Windows 10 Universal Apps - Report

No word on which apps will be available on the console.

The New Xbox One Experience, which released last year, made it possible for Microsoft's console to run Windows 10 apps. Now, it looks like it will be getting those applications soon. The news was reportedly confirmed by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella at a Madrid event in front of thousands of developers (via Windows Central).

No Caption Provided

Nadella announced the news, but he didn't say exactly when, where, or which apps would live on the Xbox One. It has not been confirmed whether the console will get its own version of the Windows 10 Store or if apps will be added to the existing store's app section.

Two of the possible apps could be Microsoft Word and Excel, and if you're thinking they probably wouldn't be too easy to use with the Xbox One controller, then you might be happy to know that Xbox head Phil Spencer mentioned keyboard and mouse support might happen.

The Windows 10 personal assistant, Cortana, made its way to Xbox One with last year's NXOE update.

Wow what a great idea because when you turn on your console the idea is not to play games instead you have a strong desire to do an excel report.

So what apps does Win10 have that someone might actually want on Xbox that Xbox doesn't already have?

@Mirimon78: They can just use MS Edge to visit downdetector.com and laugh at how even with the terrible week Live had last week, PSN has still had more outages than Live in 2016.

@suicidesn0wman: lol... you actually look at downdetector?????? Do you even know how it works? Where their "data" comes from and how they allegedly calculate and then represent this soncalled data?

But, if you really want to use them as your foundation for argument... in the last 55 days both networks were allegedly having issues for 50 of them (both magically are missing the sane days...)

Lets show the real difference.... since 1 January 2016 down detector has this:

77,846 incidents of issues with xbox live

13,287 incidents of issues with psn.

Get that.. in the same time from, and while havi g nearly 9 times more users than xbl, and almost twice as many different platform types to deliver to, xbl had 6 times as many issues????

Neither of which accounts for claims during scheduled maintenance, which there were much of (guess who does scheduled maintenance more often????)...

Anyways... even using the poorly contrived and absurdly represented data from your own source, xbl has no less than 6 times as many issues as psn.......

Don't ask for a link again... that was your own source, unless you want to ignore that also... you might have better getting more solid evidence from the aether.....

@Mirimon78: How convenient it must be for you to ignore the 300,000 reports on Jan 4th for PSN. It's ok, I get it, you love Playstation so much you can't even imagine the idea of saying one singular truthful statement ever.

I seriously don't get why you have to constantly lie, what does it benefit you? You make The Boy Who Cried Wolf look like fucking Honest Abe.

@suicidesn0wman: lol... wow.. now you just make stuff up when your own "sources" don't support your delusions..

Why do you bother posting links when they don't support your claim? Why feign ignorance every time? Do you like being wrong an looking like an ass?

@suicidesn0wman: lol... you can't even do a good job of making things up....

300k issues in one day, when the total this year so far isn’t even 20k????

Go ahead, link a copy of that "report"...

So, accept that every story you have been inventing here has as always been disproved again, ir get pissy and infantile when you get caught yet again....

I would laugh were you just trolling, but you are simply being a petulant child.

@suicidesn0wman: If Win10 got an official Spotify app, I'd use that on Xbox.

Though Xbox still wouldn't get Spotify for a while because of PS4 exclusivity.

I'm sure it will have mouse and keyboard support. In fact, it probably already has, but it's the game devs that disable it.

Very cool! I think most of the younger gamers won't find this attractive, but I think having access to all types of files and apps across all platforms can be very useful. I think by the time the Next Gen game system comes out Microsoft will have worked out all the bugs and really hit it's stride, by carving out a unique space in the gaming world. I have been gaming since the Atari and owned almost every console since then. I really applaud the risks they have taken and continue to take, in order to do something different. Really excited for Augmented Reality!

@Myron117: No, she didn't. Here in Holland we can't even talk to our Xbox through Kinect (doesn't support Dutch, but we can't use English either; so a paper-weight) or use Cortana on Windows 10 (not eloquently solved either as it is greyed out stating blatantly that the Dutch are screwed). Microsoft deems the Dutch speaking nation (60 million native speakers around the globe) too small and not worth the trouble. So basically, they say F*#K YOU DUTCHIES. Hence the fact that PlayStation and Apple reign supreme here (and not the other way round, Microsoft).

How is this news... We've(developers) known for ever that the Xbox was getting UWP apps. The idea is you'd buy an Xbox with Kinect and put it in the office conference room to run the TV. Not bring the Office to your living room.

@Barighm: Not 'just' another Windows 10 device, Microsoft simply decided that it's not enough to simply seek being the 'center of your living room' they are seeking to make Xbox (now synonymous with Windows10) the electronic 'Center' of our work/entertainment lives... 'Xbox Everywhere' if you will.

The thought goes like this... When you, the gamer, aren't conveniently playing Xbox games on the One you can play also them 'on the go', on your PC, Tablet or Mobile Windows 10 devices (streamed or even played directly) when you're away from the primary console itself.

Windows & Xbox... Two juggernauts once attempting to ride each others' coattail's, now fully empower one another as two sides of the same 'two-headed' coin.

Windows 10 is Xbox and Xbox One is Windows 10 in your Living Room, being the same hardware it was intended to be, with renewed power through the now greater list of things it has to offer, which includes its newfound mobility!

Their hope is to have users ever engaged with their products, just as much as when you look at the person next to you wherever you go, always with their heads buried in their electronics... i.e phone or tablet. For the newly engaged consumer... Becoming an Xbox user is to become a Windows 10 user, and to become a Windows 10 user is to become an Xbox user. This is where all this is headed... If they succeed.

@theteaface: They never said that at any point when mentioning the One... In fact, it was 'hinted' this would happen from the very first reveal of the system and so was Cortana on the One. The problem is many simply missed it. Watch the first part of the Xbox Reveal Event (the very beginning) and pay attention, you'll catch it...

"keyboard and mouse support"

Considering certain developers create games for consoles which are more suited to keyboard and mouse I am surprised this has yet to happen for consoles. I mean lets look at all those RTS's and how intuitive they were with a controller. I loved Halo Wars and the like, but controllers were just terrible for it.

Interesting to see that MS platforms are bridging the gap between PC and console.

@Smosh150: creating additional ui features and alternatives for sers simply means more time, thus more cost, as well it crosses an issue for many games of controller vs kb/m in a competative gamerype (kb takes less skill, thus dominates a controller user in games like an fps and mmo, while controller would win for vehicular controls. It would devide their audience.

@Barighm: Neither did I, but it is not ideal and severely reduces ones Actions Per Minute, the control over the camera(Such as changing the angle), inability to select units without moving the entire screen, etc. Then you are also locked into certain control schemes. Assigning squads would be very limited if not non-existent(Lump in all hotkeys which are very important to RTS's). The most ideal I had played out of the bunch was RA3, but I also got it on PC a few months down the line and my performance as well as ease of use was drastically increased. Having a problem vs less than ideal is different(My view is on the latter).
