Xbox Scorpio Dev Kit Shown Off Ahead Of E3 2017

It has an additional 12 GB of RAM and other benefits.

Microsoft's new console, Project Scorpio, is coming out this year and it aims to be one of the biggest storylines at E3 next week. The console that Microsoft will sell is different from the system's software development kit, which is given to developers to use to make their games.

Today, Microsoft released a video in which Xbox engineer Kevin Gammill talks about the devkit, which is more powerful and doesn't have exactly the same form factor as the retail kit (which hasn't even been shown off yet). It has 24 GB of GDDR5 RAM, which is 12 gigs more than the retail unit. It also has an additional 1 TB hard drive. Also of note, the system has a front-panel display that can display frame rate and can even have light games like Snake programmed on it.

In other Scorpio news, Microsoft announced recently that the console will launch in China this year. It's notable since Xbox One wasn't released in China until after it came out in the US and other major regions.

More details on Scorpio will presumably be discussed at E3 next month, during Microsoft's briefing on the afternoon of June 11. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

All Xbox One games work on Scorpio, though the Scorpio editions can look and perform better, in some cases, if developers want to do that. It is a similar situation with PS4 and PS4 Pro.

The editing in this article is terrible. The writer posts about E3 next month on June 11th, in an article posted this month, June.

The only reason for M$ is doing this to show what can be, as a last roll of the dice. If this flops they will pull out of the console market...so in the future the developers and CEO at M$ can not whinge about not what coulda, shoulda have done as this is it...a console with big specs...

I’m trying to understand what their target audience is, I could understand if they were the market leader and wanted to capitalize on expanding the gaming experience to their existing customer base, but they’re not so I don’t see how this is going to gain any ground with Sony. They better have some killer exclusives otherwise this was just a waste of time

I trully dont understand the whole "give them higher specs so they can come in high and tune down" WTF Microsoft if at the end of the day we will end up with half the console you are presenting here. What this will do is just create an unprecedented amount of broken title, mark my words. This is their chance to level the scale and they are blowing it up , all they want is attention and ppl thinking they are getting a beast of a console on par with mid-to-high PCs and in reality all we are getting is just a slightly more powerful console than the PS4 PRO.

@yazman666: Well from I've read in the past they always done this even with generations of the past, it's part of how they make games. Also a "Slightly more powerful then the PS4 PRO" your kidding right ? Also don't compare consoles with PC's I'm in a position that I could game on PC but I don't for many reasons and I'm sure others have the reasons to not prefer gaming on PC.

@yazman666: SDK's usually have higher specs so devs can run debugging tools alongside the game. While I never touched one of those SDK's, I think the actual game running inside the SDK is restricted to retail specs.

@yazman666: It's actually quite a bit more powerful. Adding the computing grunt of a vanilla Ps4 to a PS4 pro still doesn't equal the 6 tflps that Scorpio handles.

@yazman666: lets see. the actual developers are asking for what makes their life easier to develop games for, and of course people that code are in agreement, and people with any sense understand the logic. Its also fully explained in the video, yet you disagree....

if you actually had a mid or high end pc you would realize the forza testing done by digital foundry proved its easily a mid range pc actually it proved its at least a fairly high end pc.

i compared their testing to my tital pascal on the same settings in forza i was about 20% faster. my pc is worth $2000 easily.

How Scorpio can kill Playstation:

1. Give Scorpio access to the Steam library.

2. Ensure Scorpio has mouse and keyboard support.

@alexander_mark: It wouldn't kill Playstation tho. It would just be the first slightly successful Steam Box. The only way to truly compete with Sony is to focus on bringing more quality exclusives to Xbox. The reality is Sony continues to look more and more attractive to gamers who want exclusive games they can't get anywhere else, which also brings more devs to Sony. This is something that never stops. More games, bigger install base, more games, bigger install base...etc. Bigger install base attracts third party devs, when those devs make games for PS4, more gamers want the console.

This happened towards the end of last generation. All of a sudden gamers realized just how valuable Sony's system was. MS has some great exclusives, but the games just aren't as unique. I'm the type of gamer who will buy an Xbox just for Forza, and some would buy for Halo or another shooter, but when it comes to action/adventure, RPG, EXCLUSIVE SPIDER-MAN GAME!!!, foh. Sony will always take the crown at some point. They figured out that part of the business. Getting great and unique games from talented devs on their console is just something Sony does better than the other guys.

@alexander_mark: Only chance in hell I’d consider getting 1 since you already know it’ll be hurting for good games… There might already be Steam Boxes but at least Xbox’s OS has already been proven etc

@sealionact: No, it would kill PS. It wouldn't hurt Scorpio in any way. Mouse and keyboard support are coming to X1 anyway, but are optional. If a Steam store was put in that too would be optional.

@NeonicTrash: It would hurt scorpio, because when I go online I know that I am playing on a level field - apart from TV size. Some players having kb/m would have an advantage over those that don't, which will leave those who don't with a bad taste. Hence, it would most certainly damage Scorpio. MS would never allow a competitor to have a store on their consoles.

They got it wrong. You put less RAM in devkits and make them less powerful to encourage developers to optimize their games.

@SingletreeAve: Erm...no...they heavily upgraded the RAM from X1 to Scorpio...they want devs to have full access to every bit they added, and the additional devkit RAM on top of that is needed to run other tools/programs while games are running. Basic devkit stuff, are you new to gaming?

I hate to say that its going to take at least 3 years before developers even get to use half of that power. Hell they havent fully ustilise the current console fully yet. Microsoft needs to focus on supporting games for their current consoles....

@spluxman: No...it won't. Architecture is still similar enough to X1...we will be seeing 4k native games within weeks/months...how is that 3 years? You get a game going in 4k, that is the max res of the console right there. And the CPU while upgraded is similar enough to X1 CPU, that devs know what they're dealing with.

@alaskancrab: Because their investment funding comes from the current consoles by volume. It will take at least 3 years of selling the consoles to hopefully get a volume of users to the current levels which takes time. Yes same code but still have to develop and optimise for both systems to keep profitable until the new one is profitable, it dosent happen over night. I dont see ps4 users coming over to it.

@spluxman: Also Sony will bring out another one in 3 to 4 years and this Scorpio will look old. Xbox one has a image problem that started from launch and now dumping it says to owners our product hardware is a failure when it is not so. Its the old fuddy duddy seahunts that tried to sell at the begining failed.....Need Hipsters to sell the product to the current gen...Parents are not going to be happy buying another console just to play games...

@spluxman: Obviously a new Playstation will release at some point, and have higher specs than Scorpio. And at some point somewhere on Earth, it will rain. Quite the revelation there.

Every console's specs age after YEARS....

They're not dumping the X1...that's why Scorpio only runs X1 games.

X1 will get at least another 3-4 years of game support, that's a lengthy lifespan for any console.

@joshrmeyer: I honestly think Sony are done with the generation thing also. Sony execs have never talked about a ps5 (as far as I can tell).
"In his conversation with Sony’s president, he asked him “What does the PS5 look like?” Shuhei Yoshida responded simply by saying, “You mean if…”"
"After Shuhei’s comment, Lorne asked him “Are you willing to say that on stage?” and Shuhei nodded, “Yeah, it’s an if.”"

Of course there will be another Playstation - but I honestly believe the days of definite generations (PS1, PS2 etc) are over. PS5 and Xbox 2 will have enhanced versions of PS4 and X1 games.
Just my opinion.
