Xbox Scorpio Dev Kit Shown Off Ahead Of E3 2017

It has an additional 12 GB of RAM and other benefits.

Microsoft's new console, Project Scorpio, is coming out this year and it aims to be one of the biggest storylines at E3 next week. The console that Microsoft will sell is different from the system's software development kit, which is given to developers to use to make their games.

Today, Microsoft released a video in which Xbox engineer Kevin Gammill talks about the devkit, which is more powerful and doesn't have exactly the same form factor as the retail kit (which hasn't even been shown off yet). It has 24 GB of GDDR5 RAM, which is 12 gigs more than the retail unit. It also has an additional 1 TB hard drive. Also of note, the system has a front-panel display that can display frame rate and can even have light games like Snake programmed on it.

In other Scorpio news, Microsoft announced recently that the console will launch in China this year. It's notable since Xbox One wasn't released in China until after it came out in the US and other major regions.

More details on Scorpio will presumably be discussed at E3 next month, during Microsoft's briefing on the afternoon of June 11. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

All Xbox One games work on Scorpio, though the Scorpio editions can look and perform better, in some cases, if developers want to do that. It is a similar situation with PS4 and PS4 Pro.

@yukushi: It would run at at least $1000, and games would look exactly the same as on a standard Scorpio. But yeah, if I had unlimited funds .... why not?

I am thinking about abandoning Microsoft if they do not deliver some more single player focused games at E3. Sony has been delivering on the amazing single player experiences that our exclusive to their console. Horizon Zero Dawn was a graphical power house with a pretty great story. Nier Automata was a work of art that just happens to be a video game. Uncharted 4 brought a great conclusion to Nathan Drakes story. There are also great exclusives to look forward to. Uncharted Lost Legacy, God of War, Spiderman, Last of Us 2... Plus whatever surprises they announce at E3. Microsoft has zero games I am looking forward too. Sea of Thieves nope. Crack Down 3... not interested... another forza game...Yawn.... I have even lost interest in cup head. a indie game they have been talking about for 3 damn years. They have nothing and I am pretty easy guy to sell on a system just give me one or two great games that I can look forward to and I will be happy. They have not done this but I am crossing my fingers for E3... Maybe announce a cool new exclusive and for the love of god make Fable 5

@Legend_of_Link: You don't buy 3rd party games? They'll all be best on Scorpio, in terms of consoles.

How could you lose interest in Cuphead? MS has made significant investment and it's become a much bigger game than originally planned.

You said in another comment you've spent thousands on MS products...well if a bunch of that was in Xbox software, if you abandon them you won't see your library upgraded like Scorpio will do to it.

@Legend_of_Link: What your going through is pretty understandable and your not the only one thinking the samething.

Microsoft is in a weird place right now sure they have won back some of their previous clients with their backward compatibility and the whole play x1 games on pc jazz honestly does microsoft have any studios they are closely partnered with to make exclusives for them? Besides lionhead studios which is closed down now and bungie who are independent and well owned by activision imo. There is the coalition and 343 thats it unless Microsoft quits short changing projects like the phantom dust remake i dont see the situation becoming any better anytime soon.

@BlackBaldwin: I know it is a bad trend we are seeing of them shutting down projects and studios. Maybe there is a chance they have been working closely with a good studio out there but we just dont know about it yet... Anyways E3 will be a big deciding factor for me on whether I get a scorpio

@Legend_of_Link: Time to broaden your horizons, single player focused adventures may well be amazing but you are selling yourself short, there is a plethora of games available covering many a genre that are all amazing in their own ways. I have been gaming since the 70's and to just focus on one area to me as a gamer seems absurd. Dont dis a machine or a company just because the way they are going isnt the flavour of your month, the gaming world is dynamic forever changing they dont all get it right all of the time hiccups and missteps happen but they all keep on going forward and we all keep going with them, games as a whole are getting better and better all the time.

@metalion: I have every right to dis a company if I want to. I have spent thousands of dollars over the years on Microsoft products and have every right to voice my concern over their future game lineup. For someone who grew up during the civil rights movement you sure have a lot to learn about free speech.

I grew up in the 90's and I play a lot of different types of games. I play multiplayers, platformers, indies, and single player driven experiences. My favorite our single player games. My comment was on Microsoft's lack of good exclusive content. In MY OPINION they have zero games that look great to me and a tone of games that I just do not think look interesting. I feel they need a few NEW Microsoft ICONS. They have the Master Chief, Gears of War Guy, and Forza. Fable is dead for all we know and they have not released a new IP worth a damn in years. They last great exlcusive xbox game might be Alan Wake. Once again this is my opinion the I have formed over my years of gaming. I know your older but for God Sakes I am 27 and dont need people telling me how I need to broaden my gaming horizon and what I should really think.

@Legend_of_Link: They put out new single player IP last year. Recore and Quantum Break, to mixed reaction. But they were released and were new single player IP exclusive to X1 on console.

@NeonicTrash: I did not like Recore or Quantum Break. I play 3rd party games as well. They have been talking about cup head forever when it just seems like a indie title to me. I am just saying that I want some new game announcements at E3 to get me excited about the scorpio because as it stands right now I dont see a reason to buy one..... I am also excited about what the Scorpio is capable of... I just need to see some games that they are working on that I am interested in.

With console getting uber-ized I really wish in the future they would start supporting multiple monitors. Can you imagine buying two Xbox Scorpios, chaining them together for multiple processing power and gaming in ultra resolution on a triple display with racing games? Forza in 3 panel surround? That will quickly convert some PC gamers.

I think if both console makers can just get their best hardware out there to get games running at 4k/60 they can easily go back to to the longer life cycles of 5-10 years. Microsoft announcing the under powered Xbox One with the majority of early games running at 720p just after consumer 4K TV's starting becoming affordable was so stupid and short sighted. PS4 still not hitting 60fps either.. We need a complete refresh where both party's are at 4k/60 to catch up with the rapid adoption on 4K and let the games sell the consoles like they use to. I've already got 3 4K tv's in my house and now Optima has announced their sub $2000 4K HDR projector. It's foolish for any new hardware, gaming or otherwise, no NOT be full 4K HDR ready in terms of ALL it's features, that includes gaming.

@khanwashere: What consumer level 4k TVs were starting to become affordable in 2013?

I didn't even hear about 4k till 2015 when I was looking to buy a new TV.

And I paid thousands for the large set I got. Similar TVs now, 2 years later, I see selling for like half of what I paid. And with the delay in 4k blu rays not starting to come out till early 2016, and proper 4k capable consoles in Pro and Scorpio just now coming to market, I actually regret my early adoption of 4k and feel I could've just waited and gotten an even better TV for less money. Also your forgetting that the first few waves of 4k TVs lacked the HDR specs that are becoming the standard now, and HDR/wide color gamut is one of the most important features of new TVs.

MS would've been way premature thinking about creating a 4k gaming console to release in 2013. What PC graphics cards even supported 4k back then? I feel just since mid-last year, 4k is really starting to catch on, take over physical store stock, and has become affordable for most. I think Scorpio is coming at the right time.

@jergernice123: o i see, why i don't have a HDR monitor so i wouldn't know what it looks like, i bet it looks good. New tech always takes time to mature. It will be the thing or it will fade out like 3D.

I like frame per second, the more the better. If this console supports 4k 60 fps i should be able to get 1440p at 144hz. I like smooth gameplay over resolution. I really hope they just support games on windows more. I would like to use my games from my Xbox One on my PC, i would keep my Xbox Live if i could.

Man, I just want the little programmable LCD screen on the front! SO MANY USES...

#1 practical need: Have .mp3 ID3 tags scroll while media player is running, so you can leave the TV off and amp on.

Example gameplay use, ME:A: Pop up blinking characters for cues / prompts from SAM, similar to how rumble-for-scanner is used.

...not to mention all the "just make your system say funny things" uses... No way I'm springing for a devkit though -- the original Xbone unit works just fine for testing.

(yes, I know it's not in the consumer builds)

@khanwashere: They won't be "much" better. They will hit 4k more often, and framerates will be better. If you absolutely want the best visuals on a console for the biggest selling games (COD, BF, Destiny, FIFA etc..) then it might be worth getting a Scorpio. If you prefer the Sony exclusives over the Xbox's....then probably no.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind giving the devs twice the power of a normal console. Wouldn't that make it harder to design, since the console the customers are getting would be scaled back?

Anyone know?

@Daveof89: Debugging and tracking with the core specs takes away from the the developing game. If you are to track or monitor any aspect of the game you need to take away processing from the game. With the additional head room less processing is deviated from the game. Giving the developer more real world feedback of the final game without the game being fully optimized during production.

@Daveof89: For the same reason construction companies require roughly twice the area to store all the piles of masonry, wood, and materials they need to build stuff. The final product is contained to roughly half the space, but until then, they need to put that stuff SOMEWHERE.

@Daveof89: im gonna take some wild guesses....also 2 times the memory and hdd space is not 2 times the power. just more room. not faster. perhaps during development they have more software running on the dev kit to analyze performance, log issues monitor performance etc. also maybe to speed up development devs turn off compressing textures and uncompressing them and just leave them loaded?????

@Daveof89: Allows you to build above spec and then use optimization to bring the game back down to the required spec. That makes it easier to get certain elements working w/out having to struggle with the fine tuning right away.
