Xbox Series X Specs Further Detailed: Smart Delivery, Backwards Compatibility

Coming this holiday season.

Ahead of an official price and release date reveal, Microsoft recently announced new details in regards to its upcoming next-gen console, the Xbox Series X. In a blog post, Xbox head Phil Spencer focuses on a handful of key areas: hardware power, variable-rate shading and ray-tracing, an improved quick resume function, and a brand-new feature Microsoft is calling "smart delivery."

The hardware will boast 12 TFLOPS of GPU power, which Microsoft notes is twice that of Xbox One X, based on an AMD Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architecture. A Variable Rate Shading technique allows the GPU to prioritize individual effects on specific game objects rather than focus on the entire screen. It will also sport hardware-based DirectX ray-tracing. The post also confirms SSD storage and 120 FPS support.

Now Playing: Xbox Series X Cross-Buy Includes Halo Infinite & Cyberpunk 2077 - GS News Update

As for what all that power will go towards, Microsoft shared some end-user features too. The Quick Resume feature promises to be faster without waiting through loading screens, and now it can be used with multiple games at once. Xbox Series X will be backwards compatible with all previous generations of Xbox games and accessories. A new "Smart Delivery"' feature is essentially cross-buy, letting you purchase a game once and play it on whatever is the best hardware available. Microsoft says that developers and publishers will be able to choose to use the feature on games that release first on Xbox One and then later come to Xbox Series X.

Finally, Microsoft is continuing to promote its Game Pass subscription service, noting that it will carry forward into the next-generation and continue including first-party games. This notably includes Halo Infinite at launch.

The Xbox Series X is Microsoft's first volley into the next generation, as the company has noted that it's switching to just Xbox for its branding going forward. That means we may see multiple hardware revisions within the Xbox family, similar to a smartphone model. We don't know a price or release date yet, but Microsoft may reveal those at its E3 2020 presentation. For more details, check out everything we know about Xbox Series X.

What I like is not what the consoles offer but a what amd has rumoured announced.

24gig hmb2e, meaning directly from the pipeline on the GPU, true dedicated memory allowing for marvels thanos to be seen in its true render in real time, all those polygons on 5100 core CPU, that's impressive for hackers, china has 300.000+ cores for their servers, soo you'll still not come close to hacking hi grade algorithms, if only the day a gpu shipped with 100.000 cores we all would work in cyber espionage stealing from each other on the street, sadly I doubt 100.000 would suffice given the dam price for 5100cores in 2020.

This is why you don't poke a sleeping bear. I have faith in both new console as of right now but this is a beast made from last gen as it will soon be and I think Sony at this point knows it. This console has specs that some pc's don't have even yet if you built your own that is. Hell I'm building my PC now but it's not really meant for gaming but it will be greater than this how ever for work. November can't come sooner as this is a day one buy for me.

So come on Sony and show me what you got because I'm still waiting but I won't wait forever.

@notafan: Everyone needs to stop worrying about hardware on any side, and start talking about the games. MY purchase will be on the games released. It is great if 9th gen systems can do more then top end current pc's but meaning less if that game is coded for 8th gen systems. It may have a few extras frames on PC, or this or that console, but really not support ray tracing, 4k assets, architecture collision, multi-path AI, and many many more things that 'require' 9th gen hardware. If all the games are dumbed down to the largest consumer pool - then few will be able to truly take advantage of..., benefit from...., or justify.... that new purchase.

Whoever showcases that newest must have games (exclusives) built for and toward the 'metal' then that is the console for me. Also any Dragon Quest platform as well.

@notafan: Xbox isnt really worth owning unless your form of gaming is all about the living room and you have extra money to shell out for more hardware later on and monthly services. You can play all their games on a good Pc and it will run better. Also I dont care how many tflops XseX has its not better than a Pc. The consoles will run mobile chips basically. Powerful mobile chips but mobile chips nonetheless.

Ahhhhh, they had me at full backwards compatibility and some of those XBOG & XB360 games are so much better than many new gen & Indie games... everything else is icing on the cake. I feel sorry for Sony fanboys who have to buy all their PS1-PS3 games all over again & perhaps even some of those PS4 games too.... power to the XBox players bee atches!

Eh, don't fret I am gonna buy a PS5 by 2023-24 and those exclusives at bargain bin prices ($10-15 each).

Try to play most of these awesome XB backwards compatible games on the PS4/5 man.

Half-life orange box, Crysis 1-3, Dead space 1-3, Mass effect 1-3, Alien vs predator, Star Wars force unleashed 1-2, Ace combat 6, Hawx, Lost planet 1-3, Ninja Gaiden 2/3, Left 4 dead 1-2, Prince of Persia series, Zone of enders, EDF OG series, Midway arcade series, Capcom arcade cabinet, Pacman museum, TimeShift, Peter Jackson's King Kong, Asura's Wrath, Call of Juarez series, Dirt 3, Dirt Showdown, Split second, Stuntman ignition, Sonic all star racing transformed, Toy Story 3, Metal Gear rising, Red faction series, Far Cry OG series, Hard core uprising, Virtual on OT, Assault Heroes 2, Alice madness returns, Shadow of the damned, Duke Nukem series, Triggerheart exelica, Sega bass fishing, Hydro thunder, Frogger, Nights into dreams, Panzer Dragoon, Crimson skies, Fuzion frenzy & many more (more than 600++ BC games)!

@just1mohr: I support your comment, but also, the purchase of a new consoles is to play new games. Why buy a new system to play a 6th, 7th ,or 8th gen game with a few extra frames if even that. Not many will be shedding their old systems, do not have access to these games on PC, or even wanting to revisit certain old games.

The ps2 was BC with psone, the ps3 was not compatible with any system back or forward (cell processor), and the ps4 BC with ps2, ps1, and many ps3 through emulation, ps5 with one, 2 , 4, and some 3 through emulation. None of this Hardly matters to the 110million 8th gen ps4 consumers who bought that console with out a care in the world to Backwards compatibility.

To some folks BC is important, but currently as it stands 8th gen console owners do not put this as the most pressing issue.

Say what you might, but I think Sony fanboys will go nuts if Sony announces PS1-PS3 & PSP/Vita full backwards compatibility on PS5. Heck, I would even buy one on launch day alongside my XB1 if that was the case.

@just1mohr:Oh yeah, of course they would and it would move consoles. But if they also released Horizon Zero Dawn, NieR: Automata sp?, Death Stranding, and Legacy of Kain new games--- and/or a few new IPs, that would really move console units way more then BC. Same for Xbox.

@troystevens5: No one has put forward a set amount, we have heard 1tb at launch of ms.2 pcie ? but no set amount. Some have reported embedded m.2 ram with a larger slower sdd. And support for more. That is both new 9th gen consoles.

Specs will be set pretty soon as pre production is very close. We will know more then.

@troystevens5: Reports indicate it's a 1TB SSD at launch. Think anything bigger than 1TB would drive up costs too much right now

But there also appears to be a slot for an additional SSD on the back of the console

@lonewolf1044: Though that expansion slot might only support officially branded proprietary drives from Microsoft, likely to be overpriced :/

Might end up being a bit like the Vita in that regard

I would need a reason to buy the thing aside from Halo and that one thing with the Danish woman. Because I'm going to buy a new computer next year anyway, and that hardware will be just as good.

The beauty of ray tracing is, you don't need a 4k TV for it, not even a 1080p.all you need is money lots and lots of money to buy the feature, or you can go outside and look.

Can't wait for human physical deformation with body parts and organs inside, who needs brushing curtains or cloth, just gimmee persistent human deformation so I know my scares still there in 16k textures.

Ray tracing buhh.

@Crazy_sahara: Agree with lack of activity of humans, as i sit here at work typing on forums. But that is not what ray tracing does. And while it is a nice feature, it will not change life in video games as we know it. Simply, it allows the pathway of light from many sources to produce many more natural and prettier graphics on what it lands. ALSO, sound. They are working with using ray tracing with sound also.

None of this is important to a gamer until they really start to implement it in games as we know them. Both system will support it, both can be updated easily enough through API, this is not a physical function, but a coding one. And like any API, which is technically what RT is, it will be much cheaper and easier to use and implement after a few years.

Remember when everyone though Direct X 12 was going to change the world???? Meanwhile those APIs were rolled out for everyone before X12 was even implemented and that much longer before developers began to use.

HDMI 2.1 is honestly the biggest thing I've been hoping to see on new consoles.

Having a G-Sync monitor for the past few years has been amazing & I've really been waiting for both consoles & TVs to support low-latency high-framerate variable refresh rates. So many games don't manage a locked 60fps, but this will make a huge difference in those cases.

G-Sync is Nvidia only and consoles use AMD GPU.

@Shebuka: All true, but having TVs that support it will be great. The higher bandwidth standard should allow for better framerates than we're currently seeing anyway.

To be honest, I have no interest in an Xbox. I already have a PC. I'm looking forward to Playstation delivering a more powerful console so I can play their exclusives. i just hope they're up to par with some of the features that Xbox are offering.

The cross buy needs to be adapted everywhere. I bought GTA 5 on release for PS3, then had to buy again for PS4. Then year ago on XB1 cause my friends love console hopping. But yea as someone who owns both, I’ll probably get the X Series first then PS5 because of Sony’s exclusives.

And I can’t help but like Sony’s exclusives

The only thing that sucks is saving $ for both

@jumalan75: Yea that’s what sucks, saving for both. I’d get the second console during a sale to save some money. If both consoles had true crossplay, where every game was supported then I’d just get the PS5.

Other than that, this still sounds a like a solid upgrade for both systems. After using an SSD external drive on my Xbox, that made a huge difference. Now imagine the system being on that. It’s the load times that is getting to me, especially GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption, the worst loading times for any game.

@Ice-Cube: Cross buy is probably not going to happen for PlayStation seeing as Sony only has one active platform, PS4.

Sony has very little to gain from cross buy.

Again, if the gen 9 consoles are as capable as advertised, $500 is an absolute bargain.

I still don’t understand how people think $1000+ smartphones updated annually are acceptable but $500 consoles with advanced technology are considered a ripoff.

@GalvatronType_R: Completely agree. The only one problem with the 'too soon' thing is that my wife usually gets me the newer Xboxes for an xmas present. So when she heard about the series x, she mentioned how she only just bought me the XBX1 Scorpio. I'm Hyped for this massively, just hope my TV can support it properly!

@GalvatronType_R: because we got a bunch of idiots all over the world. I don't understand it either. People out here buying a new iPhone paying on average $800-$1100 a year but complain about a game console (that comes out every 6-7 years) costing $400-$500. Truly insane but what can you do in this world.

Personally I'm a Xbox guy and this just make me want the console more at this point. I don't know what Sony is doing but I think that they are just buying their time on this because they know that they are in trouble this gen. We know way more about the new Xbox than anything about Sony's next PS system which I think is a crisis on Sony's part. However if the rumors are true that Sony's console is going to significantly weaker that than the new Xbox and that the console will be higher as well it's just a doomed console.

@notafan: I

I’m an Xbox guy first as well, then Ninty then ps. The ps won’t be doomed although it will be a lot weaker than XseX there’s no doubt about it. That’s exactly why we haven’t heard a peep out of the ps camp.

Even so I think it’ll still sell more than XseX. Ps has a larger fanbase and is in a lot more markets than Xbox.

XseX is monstrous though it shits on mehstation 5 from a towering great height.

It’s XseX day 1 for me along with my Gamepass Ultimate subscription which I saved $288 on and have it right up until November 2022. Won’t have to pay a scent for any Xbox exclusives right up until then. Awesome deal.

Will get mehstation 5 when the first good discount arrives like I did with mehstation 4. I got that jet engine console for $250 AUS.

@jumalan75: It does and I will be listing as well because it's been awhile since I had a PlayStation console and to me the ps4 was attractive but then Microsoft dropped the 1X and well the rest is history. I do like like the ps4 pro but it was the weaker choice graphically and if I was going to drop $400 US on it would it would have to be at the same level of the X1 which it wasn't.

If the 9tf rumors are true, it will be oitright dissapointing. In any regards MS seems confident in their product, and thats a good sign.

I’m telling you now mark my words XseX is way more powerful than mehstation 5. It is only 9 tf using RDNA 1. The XseX is 12.18 tf which uses RDNA 2 which is more powerful and more efficient at the same time. It’s a wider gap than what the 1X has over the piss poor pro. So yeah you are going to be outright disappointed as is the entire SDF lol. So come over to Xbox mate your more than welcome. ‘Jump In’

@ballis: You are telling the truth here, but if all the leaks are true like I said sony would be doomed this cycle. Plus with all the trouble over sea's with this so called virus many electronic companies expect the ps5 to be ridiculously expensive now and plus the parts they are using to build the console are limited which in return will drive cost up as well. I'm expecting this console to drop in at around $599.99 US as of this time unless something changes real soon, Plus Sony can't afford to take a real hit console selling it at a $200.00 loss it would be the end of the PlayStation as we know it unless they sell it off.

Microsoft is going all out with this release, correcting all the mistakes of the last release and adding some nice new features. Now if we could just get a price and a better idea of what they mean by multiple sku's. I want to buy the best version they will have, not buy a launch version and then find out 6 months later there's a better version out and then a better version a year after that.

Sony needs to start throwing out some information soon. I mean what do we know about the PS5? It's called the PS5 and current gen games will load much faster on next gen hardware, thanks to the SSD and the fact that they are old azz games running on new hardware..... Oh and something something ray-tracing. Come on, Sony. Throw us a bone. You have no upcoming conventions so there's no time like the present.

@bdrtfm: I think multiple SKUs as in higher and lower versions with different GPUs, storage capacities, and price. We'll want the high spec'd machine (and maybe skimp on storage space if we want to save a couple of bucks).

There won't be a new version our for a couple of years and that will likely be a slim with better cooling and maybe an upgraded HDMI spec.
