Xbox Series X Specs Further Detailed: Smart Delivery, Backwards Compatibility

Coming this holiday season.

Ahead of an official price and release date reveal, Microsoft recently announced new details in regards to its upcoming next-gen console, the Xbox Series X. In a blog post, Xbox head Phil Spencer focuses on a handful of key areas: hardware power, variable-rate shading and ray-tracing, an improved quick resume function, and a brand-new feature Microsoft is calling "smart delivery."

The hardware will boast 12 TFLOPS of GPU power, which Microsoft notes is twice that of Xbox One X, based on an AMD Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architecture. A Variable Rate Shading technique allows the GPU to prioritize individual effects on specific game objects rather than focus on the entire screen. It will also sport hardware-based DirectX ray-tracing. The post also confirms SSD storage and 120 FPS support.

Now Playing: Xbox Series X Cross-Buy Includes Halo Infinite & Cyberpunk 2077 - GS News Update

As for what all that power will go towards, Microsoft shared some end-user features too. The Quick Resume feature promises to be faster without waiting through loading screens, and now it can be used with multiple games at once. Xbox Series X will be backwards compatible with all previous generations of Xbox games and accessories. A new "Smart Delivery"' feature is essentially cross-buy, letting you purchase a game once and play it on whatever is the best hardware available. Microsoft says that developers and publishers will be able to choose to use the feature on games that release first on Xbox One and then later come to Xbox Series X.

Finally, Microsoft is continuing to promote its Game Pass subscription service, noting that it will carry forward into the next-generation and continue including first-party games. This notably includes Halo Infinite at launch.

The Xbox Series X is Microsoft's first volley into the next generation, as the company has noted that it's switching to just Xbox for its branding going forward. That means we may see multiple hardware revisions within the Xbox family, similar to a smartphone model. We don't know a price or release date yet, but Microsoft may reveal those at its E3 2020 presentation. For more details, check out everything we know about Xbox Series X.

My, my, this is getting interesting....

The ball is in Sony's court now, and with the lack of information, all the convention cancellations, reports of PS5 cost going through the roof, and high level management disagreements, they need to come out with some info stat.

I’m most excited for Smart Delivery. Buying an Xbox One game and being able to play the upgraded version on the gen 9 console is one of the most pro-consumer moves I’ve ever seen in gaming.

@GalvatronType_R: "developers and publishers will be able to choose to use the feature" so it's not a universal functionality. no guarantee how widely it'll be used.

@Lamesy:

Yep and any dev who doesn’t use it and charges gamers more than once for the same game will be vilified by the gaming community.

At least that’s what should happen.

@gamerbum: They are going to release the game for the new console first, then after a few months they release it on current gen with SmartD enabled. Problem solved. And they will say something like "we have to downgrade the game and it wasn't easy" or something like that.

@midna: Microsoft is fully vested in the PC platform. Whether or not the games will come to the PC isn't the thing to be concerned about. Will the games come to Steam and hopefully GOG is the more urgent question.

@MigGui: Sure if your PC is from 2017-18. Those who have something more up to date don't have to worry about besting a console where graphics and performance are concerned.

@lonesamurai00: Actually, the technology used on Xbox AMD GPU (RDNA 2) is still not available to consumers. You can't have it now on PC. Watch the DF video posted today if you want more info.

@sealionact: Oh I already read that hours ago, and it said "on paper" which means that it's conjecture. Why does who has what GPU matter anyway. That has no bearing at all. Nvidia doesn't base the number of GPUs, or the kind of GPUs they make on how many PC Gamers buy them. This is about what is possible and a console can't be upgraded, which his why consoles age so quickly.

Anyway we're waiting on Ampere. Turing is a year and a half old now.

@lonesamurai00: XSX at 2080 super levels? Of course it's conjecture... you speculated that any PC built after 2018 would best an xsx which is conjecture too, as well as somewhat laughable.

Think I can safely say there's more chance of the former than the latter.

@sealionact: Look man, the GeForce RTX 2080 released in 2018 - 2018. We already knew that the GPU new consoles would at least be as powerful as the GeForce RTX 2080, and there isn't a lot of difference between the 2080 and 2080 Super. I know that you're excited, but chill.

PS5 won’t match the power of Nvidia’s RTX 2080

@lonesamurai00: Well "man", when you make off the cuff remarks like any PC after 2018 will best a console graphically, dont be surprised if someone asks you to back up that claim.

A minority of PC gamers have a 2080 card. We know this from Steam...therefore the majority of PC gamers will either have poorer graphics, or they'll have to upgrade.

That's all there is to say really.

@sealionact: No, there is more to be said, unless it's all that you personally have to say. Yes PC Gamers will surely upgrade to Ampere, because it's Nvidia and they rule the roost in terms of desktop GPUs.

Steam Hardware Surveys are speculative at best since the surveys are no prerequisite for using the service. I myself have a very very powerful PC, and I always make sure that I do, but one thing that I never do is opt into Steam Hardware Surveys and I can assure you that I am not the only one who doesn't. It's simply all that you and other console gamers have to cling to, oops I mean go by really.

Even beyond that, any PC gamer (no matter his hardware or setup) has an upgrade path, and that is a path of which no console gamer has at all.

@lonesamurai00: I'm trying to stay civil here, but you're honestly floundering around trying to justify your comment. Could you answer these questions for me please?

1. Given that MS has stated that xsx is using a 12tflp gpu, can we agree that this is at 2080 level? Not even a Super?

2. Do you honestly think that the majority of PC gamers who have bought or built a rig since 2018 are using above a standard 2080 card?

3.Given that I will upgrade my x1x to an xsx for less than the cost of a 2080 PC gpu, how is that no upgrade path?

Let's be sensible. You replied to a jokey comment with a statement that you cant back up, but cant bring yourself to admit it.

@sealionact:

1. I have already pointed you to an article dated August 2019 that blew the whistle on this GPUs power, an RTX 2080. I've already told you this is nothing new.

2. I still don't understand why that would even matter, and you have yet to explain why.

3. Upgrade path every 4-5 years, okay. Can you even call that an upgrade path. that's even if you see another console again seeing as they are struggling with losing money from producing them. And of course an RTX 2080 costs more than a console. Consoles are after all, cheap for several of reasons.

I was actually wrong when I said you'd be under next generation consoles if you have a PC from 2018 since the RTX 2080 was released in Sept 2018. I should have said 2016-17.

You're doing all of this talking and you still don't know what you're getting for sure, or what to expect. As far as anything that I have said the upgrade path is the only thing which could be open to interpretation.

So what? You think you're doing me some kind of a favor by staying civil?

@lonesamurai00: It matters because you made the ridiculous claim that any PC after 2018 can outperform the xsx.

I cant believe you seriously want me to explain this to you...again. It's like explaining to a 2 year old why they mustn't put their hands in the fire.

In order for a PC to outperform an xsx, it needs to have at least an rtx 2080. You follow me so far, or do you need to read it again?

So again, is it your claim that the majority of PC gamers have bought better than rtx 2080 since 2016-17 (updated)? Lmao.

"Of course an rtx 2080 PC gpu alone costs more than a whole console with a rtx 2080 gpu?"

Wtf? Are you being serious right now?

Even if Steam is inaccurate, their figures are that 0.6 percent of PC gamers are using an rtx 2080 card. Go ahead double that figure if you need. Still isn't "Every PC since 2016".

Lol.

@sealionact: Don't tell me things that I did or didn't say.

As long as you have something more up to date, is what I said.

Now, do you even read what you type before hitting the little Post Reply button? You have twice shown a bizarre, absurd, irresponsible, ludicrous, and very odd interest in what PC hardware that people are running, then I literally ask you to explain why it is important and what is your reply - duh "In order for a PC to outperform an xsx, it needs to have at least an rtx 2080. You follow me so far, or do you need to read it again?"

Boy you don't make a lick of sense (and that's not an insult).

Now, when did I say verbatim that majority of PC gamers have bought better than rtx 2080 since 2016-17. Where did I say that, point it out please.

@lonesamurai00:

You're desperately trying to justify what you said, when you actually should have said "A PC can beat any console if it has more powerful components"....not "more up to date..."

My PC was bought in 2019 and it has a 1060, so hey....theres a more modern PC than 2018, right?

Where did you say it? Again? Amnesia run deep in your family?

Uh....right after somebody said "Plays best on xsx".

Your reply;

"Those who have something more up to date (than 2017-18) don't have to worry about besting a console where graphics and performance are concerned."

Remember?

So embarrass me. Show me a study that says that PCs after 2018 have better than an rtx 2080...because that would best the console being discussed.

If not, take the L and move on.

@sealionact: Something more up to date means at least an RTX 2080 dummy. I already knew the score probably before you. I showed you the article that I found way back last August. It won't beat out current high end GPUs from Nvidia which shows that AMD is still woefully behind Nvidia when you also factor in the Nvidia still hasn't released a 7nm GPU and they are still beating AMD.

Ampere is going to take that pride that you feel about the upcoming Xbox machine and run circles around it.

Oh and don't forget third-party devs, they see a console as just that - a console. Then also look at how telling the GDC 2020 Survey is, where 4000 developers were asked their interests, an Xbox Series X hasn't changed their perceptions one bit. Interest for the new Xbox was behind both PC and PS5, PC was first over all platforms as usual.

Enjoy what will undoubtedly be your last console release as you know it kid.

@lonesamurai00: lol...I've seen a lot of excuses in my time on these boards; shifting goalposts, semantical arguments and plain old trolling, but I've never seen anyone redefine the English language before....hats off to you.

More up to date means exactly that...the clue is in the word "date". It doesn't mean better or more powerful, which is what you were trying to say.

I think this conversation has run it's course, but you seem to be the type who hates being proven wrong, and has to have the last word.

Knock yourself out.

@sealionact: No, you saw my first comment and went on to press me about who has what in their computer over and over. The strange thing is that you couldn't explain why it is so important to you. That's weirdest part of this whole thing.

It doesn't matter what any PC Gamer has in his rig because many PC Gamers will move along from Turing and on to Ampere increasing the performance gulf between this new Xbox and an Ampere enabled PC even further.

Hell as a PC Gamer I'm more excited for the PS5 more than Xbox. Playstation and Steam share all the great Japanese titles, and they'll be even better now.

@Utnayan: 120Hz TV's have been around for awhile. My LG has to be 10 years old now and its 120Hz. Maybe even much older than that. Can't quite remember when I bought it but it was a loooong time ago.

The top comments will likely be something along the lines of "what about games", and I do hope some more get announced at E3, but it looks like Xbox are going all in on making sure their console is beefy on the internals, which is an improvement on the Xbox One *shudder* announcement.

But at least we know Halo Infinite, Hellblade 2, Project Mara, Everwild and Playground Games RPG (Fable) are on the way - so there are games on the (Forza) horizon.
