Xbox World to reveal next-gen details in new issue - Report

The magazine will reportedly use its penultimate issue to reveal details about the next-gen Xbox; the console is said to include Kinect 2.0, Blu-ray discs, and more.

The penultimate issue of Xbox World magazine will reportedly reveal new details about Microsoft's new Xbox console, according to CVG.

Get ready for more details about the new Xbox.
Get ready for more details about the new Xbox.

The magazine's editor reportedly told the site that the next-generation Xbox will most likely be called "Xbox" instead of "Xbox 720", and will ship with 8GB of RAM and a quad-core processor.

Other details about the new console that will reportedly be revealed by Xbox World include Kinect 2.0, Blu-ray discs, directional audio, a TV output and input, an "innovative" controller, and the possibility of augmented-reality (AR) glasses to be used at a later stage in the new console's life.

Microsoft has not officially confirmed that it is at work on a new console, but speculation about the new Xbox has been circulating for some time. In June, a 56-page document allegedly from Microsoft indicated that the company is planning to launch an Xbox 720 in 2013 at $299. An updated version of the Kinect was to be included, and AR glasses support would be added sometime after launch. The document has since been removed at the behest of Microsoft's legal team.

Earlier this month, Microsoft filed a patent for a new tech system designed to monitor viewers while they watch TV.

Problem with PCs in Gaming that we actually have powerfull GPUs and Good CPUs that a lot better than Current Generation Consoles ...

So, Why GTX 580 which is more powerful than NextGeneration Consoles still cannt play every game at 60FPS on MAX and 1080P ,,, I know that on paper that GPU is monster ...

I think that Developers are too lazy to get benefit out of current high end cards ,,, they may only utilize less than 30% of their abilities !!!

If this problem solved, I think we only need 8800 Ultra to maximize every game on this generation without AA at 720P !!!

wish that their a developer that can eliminate the wast of resources

on PCs games ...

But there is a hope in NG consoles ,, because they are PCs but with deferent OS ...

As I remeber the emulation of the first XBOX was so easier compared to PLAYSTATION 2 ....
This may happen in NextGeneration Consoles !!!
Especially with current so fast PC revolution in hardware and the strong upcoming Competition on OSs side ,,, Those factors will make PC future more bright ...

One as I think of Performance drawbacks in PC gaming is Windows enviroment !!
Windows focus mostly on business side not in gaming ,, they should know that we are forced to use windows not Because we like it !!!
It is just because our favourite games are only working on Windows !!!

So I am waiting for Steam Platform ,, I heared they can port PC games into other OS ...

All I can say is the Xbox better have more than 4 cores at this point, otherwise Sony will have a huge advantage over Microsoft with its 8 core architecture.

@cantnj690 I still think they will be the same ,,, both will be 8 cores !!

In fact , if PS4 platform is based on bulldozer ,,, it is not going be perfect on gaming , although it is a monster on multithreading applications ,, it is still below some of intel's Quad Core CPUs (((in most of games ,, NOT ALL ))

But this situation can changed if developers really want to get the power out

of bulldozer ,,,

@thequickshooter I read they were thinking of having 2 models of the console. One would be a cheap arcade version where all you get is essentially a media machine to play Blu Rays and Arcade games, while the more expensive version will be for the next gen gaming.

That would completely bite MS in the ass. Honestly I can see a lot of disappointed kids waking up on Christmas and finding out their new Xbox doesn't even play any of the new games they want. It would just be a complete mess.

I wish that Kinect tech is not used to videotape us and send it back to Microsoft.

Smart move for Bluray disc support and high spec upgrade.

@victorlamy Most computers nowadays come standard with 8GB of RAM, some with 16. I think this is why the PC gaming community always laughs at us when it comes to video games. We end up with something completely standard and call it "next gen gaming."

I won't be buying it anyway. My 360 had to get repaired 4 times. Rings of death. (not like i was a heavy user). Very frustrating. I'll let Microsoft know how unhappy i am by not buying their new machine.

And suddenly they decide to embrace Blu-ray.. I have a HD-DVD add on gathering dust in my living room. I'll never early adopt again. HD-DVD could have won if Microsoft supported it better. It should have been the main player. This switching disc's caper is nonsense.

@jsmoke03 The last is the one who laugh louder. Sony is still the best of the three in my opinion. At least for two reasons: Blu-ray reader and no XboxLive fee.

@jsmoke03 Seeing as Nintendo have only just released a console on par with Sony and Microsoft's offerings this generation I'd say they were around 6 or 7 years late joining the current party.

Look, I know nothing about computers. Hardware is everything when it comes to the longevity of a console. People think Nintendo are painting themselves into a corner by courting hardcore gamers with current gen specs and failing them down the line when the 720/Durango and PS4 hit the market with overwhelming technical power. WIth multi processor technology, and multi threading yada yada... why can't processing power be upgraded along the way? So the 720 will have Quad Core, with 8GB of Ram total. If the ability currently exists to run a device with multiple processors, why can't these devices be fitted with additional processors down the line? The WiiU would have benefited from this model by being cheaper now and technologically on par with its competitors, and being capable of expanded capability down the line to remain competitive. I am sure there are technological challenges to this approach, but they seem surmountable, easily so with current tech.

Third party publishers are hesitant to support add-ons. It is really that simple. Do you make a game for the 10 million System X owners or for the 4 million System X + add-on users. It will almost always be the former.

How many 3rd party Motionplus games are there?

@deathstream I get what you are saying. I ignored the hard drive add on for my PS2. I ignored the motion + for the Wii, I ignored Kinect for my 360. But if I had a console that could have the processor upgraded, I would be all over that. Who wouldn't do it? It would be like getting a new console (in terms of processing power) for a fraction of the cost). It would be the smart thing for Nintendo to do at least, because Casual gamers have short attention spans, and when the 720 and PS4 get released and have time to infiltrate homes, the Wii U will only be a few years old, and will be neglected by hardcore and casual alike. unless they could upgrade.

@SolanOcard @deathstream I would love to drop in a new processor or ram or video card into a console just like you could a pc, but there in lies the problem. Making a game for a system with quad core 3.1 and a dual core 2.4 is almost like making a pc game that has to downgrade its graphics, it is prohibitively expensive.

@SolanOcard Your dream above is shared by me and many others. But just like you intimated technological challenges is overwhelming.

It is more than just being able to adding component and being able to play new games. Lets take a look at PC compared to Console.

PC- You have two options produce a game that works with as many pc/mac on the market (there by more people who might buy your game), produce a game to a niche market that you know will buy your game. (Usually high end gamers/heatseekers) Tech hurdles are you spend an enormous amount of time and resources making a game that will work with as many different components and specs even if you make a game for high pcs only. "with many pc makers consolidating- this has become easier fewer different components, os more of the same architecture being used."

CONSOLE- A set hardware, software, input, output device that you will not have to worry about changing over the years. Once the studios buy their dev kit - you know what you make will work with all the machines sold. 50-70 million of them. Also consumers usually get a gaming machine at cost or at a loss who would never be able to afford higher end gaming pcs, but get to play games that only the highest end pc could play. But here is the problem - you can not change the device or it will confuse or even alienate your consumer base.

Take spiderman for the psone. It sold millions, one of the best selling games for the psone. But they added some code or something in it that would not allow it to work with some of the oldest models. It scared the shit out of their consumer base- you would think the world coming was coming to an end. Mothers upset, gamers confused, even big enough that the game journalist would have to cover. Cost - nothing could be done about it, refunds by activision.

Even today take the kinect, psmove - Kinect sold very well penetrated the market well, ps move - not so well.

While those of us here know the difference between a kinect game and a non kinect game - well the service calls on why this 50-60$ kinect game will not work on my machine (non-kinect) is alot. And also many a mother wondering why all the games my kid wants does not use the kinect at all.

PC is more flexible but still limiting. You make a pc capable of playing skyrim (skyrim was made for next gen console specs btw and devs pissed the console makers didn't get the machines out by now) full HD super high settings costing 1k easy. Well you are in the minority very few of the population has that kinda machine. Still you know those that do will buy your game. Can not compete with farmville, that almost every pc can play. You get the picture.

The sega genesis I believe had a 32 mb adapter or 16mb adapter that would allow a few new games to work with better colors and graphics. Needless to say it didn't sell well because of the same problems. Not enough of them sold to bother making a game specifically for it, confused consumer who did not buy.

So the only way nintendo could make a console that could be upgradeable would be to require its base to buy the upgrade when it came out. Not gonna happen.

You know the only thing i can think of that worked was the ps one dual shock controller- new games supported it - but you could still play those games even if you didn't have one. Even if consoles did that with processors, the complicated backward compatibility would be huge cost many would not be able to take on.

I'm all for a new Xbox. That said, my PRIMARY hope is that they don't sacrifice raw power for a Kinect 2.0, in hopes to keep the costs down. I'm fine with a quad-core, and 8gb RAM on a console, since they're more optimized for gaming in the general sense.

It still won't be as powerful as my PC, but I couldn't care less. I don't expect nor want a home console to be released at a $1,000+. Online would be horrible for it for far too long. For starters, how many people have that kind of money to throw around for a difficult-to-mod proprietary home console gaming device?

Yeah, 4 cores and 8 gigs should be OK. It's mostly the graphics chip that worries me. NVIDIA-style PhysX really works well but I don't know if this AMD CPU/GPU combo thing is going to be able to do stuff like that.

It looked like a xbox media box, which explains the new name "xbox"

@sk8oridie44 I will guarantee that everyone will be just as happy and just as sad with the next gen as they have with all the other generations before it. I still think the 32 bit psone, nin 64 or the fifth gen was the best or most innovative one. Others feel the xbox with online was the best. There will be people happy and people who wish games were like the good ole days. I see no reason why this next gen will not be just fine.

@Lane_McNair That is why devs keep saying that it is so hard to develop for sony systems at the start - since asia and western developers use different tools, coding, and such.

I just hope they leave alot room for as many developers to implement their graphics engines and toolsets as possible.

I agree with lane- hope it is easy as pie to bring some old xbox games ported to the new consoles as well as old 360 games.
