Xbox World to reveal next-gen details in new issue - Report

The magazine will reportedly use its penultimate issue to reveal details about the next-gen Xbox; the console is said to include Kinect 2.0, Blu-ray discs, and more.

The penultimate issue of Xbox World magazine will reportedly reveal new details about Microsoft's new Xbox console, according to CVG.

Get ready for more details about the new Xbox.
Get ready for more details about the new Xbox.

The magazine's editor reportedly told the site that the next-generation Xbox will most likely be called "Xbox" instead of "Xbox 720", and will ship with 8GB of RAM and a quad-core processor.

Other details about the new console that will reportedly be revealed by Xbox World include Kinect 2.0, Blu-ray discs, directional audio, a TV output and input, an "innovative" controller, and the possibility of augmented-reality (AR) glasses to be used at a later stage in the new console's life.

Microsoft has not officially confirmed that it is at work on a new console, but speculation about the new Xbox has been circulating for some time. In June, a 56-page document allegedly from Microsoft indicated that the company is planning to launch an Xbox 720 in 2013 at $299. An updated version of the Kinect was to be included, and AR glasses support would be added sometime after launch. The document has since been removed at the behest of Microsoft's legal team.

Earlier this month, Microsoft filed a patent for a new tech system designed to monitor viewers while they watch TV.

These next-gen consoles are going to need some better cooling options now that they are getting closer to the specs of the PC world. Passive cooling isn't going to cut it, so expect some much noisier consoles.

@hadlee73 Hey did you know the dreamcast used a water cooling system. Matter of fact a power line to my house caused a power surge and I watched the lights in the house get really bright and steam shoot out of my dreamcast before everything went off. Was playing resident evil CV - still terrified to this day.

consoles will just have to be bigger, yes more noise for a while also. And no more using lead free solder.

@jenovaschilld @hadlee73 those are not water cooled. It uses heatpipes like most console and notebooks. In fact they are still used in x360 and ps3 (1st &2nd revisions).

Heatpipes are a lot better than water cool tubes as it transfer heat much faster and efficient, hence smaller radiator/heat sink. The only drawback, its not flexible and requires specialities tools and expertise.

@jenovaschilld @hadlee73 and poisonous, those heatpipes usually contains mercury or some hazardous chemical in it.

@jenovaschilld I think the Dreamcast had a heatpipe system rather than actual water cooling. Loved that console.

@hadlee73 well at least water based. Sato chose the Hitachi SH4 CPU architecture and VideoLogic's PowerVR2 graphics processing unit, manufactured by the Japanese company NEC. "The first version of the Dreamcast was water-cooled; they had a non-moving part, water-based cooling system. It was called Dural," said former Charles Bellfield, former Sega VP of communications (1998-2000) and VP, strategy & corporate affairs (2000-2003)."

Still pretty cool.

@hadlee73 You haven't built a pc recently have you. MS could've used a better, quiet cooling system in this generation and chose not, probably for price reasons.

@eyeball2452 Actually I build PCs all the time. My point was, as you've already stated, that the next-gen consoles could be noisy because cheap cooling solutions will be used. I prefer water cooling systems myself but I'm not counting on getting any of that action with a console :P

@hadlee73 @eyeball2452 hopefully there isnt any leakage. Seriously dont expect regular consumers to use a radiator for the consoles, they are more likely to break it.

Not necessarily; I have a couple of after-market air coolers in my pc (one for my GPU, one for my CPU) and they're quite silent. Also, I don't think that any recent console has had passive cooling.

You all think that MS xbox would include a better network card in the machine. Like those made for gaming.

Those that bypass the windows network stack, use a linux kernel (or something like it), and have better ping time, less chance for latency spikes or dc esp those that get that unexpected load.

The cost shouldn't be to much added I am not sure if the licensing would be expensive i mean almost all new or good network pc cards have these thing in use.

@jenovaschilld I'd rather a SSD drive. I'm not a game expert, but I think a lot of the problem, especially with FPSs on consoles, is the time it takes to render on screen what is actually happening in the virtual world. I've never felt like my latency was a problem in either console games or pc games and definitely not because of the stack.

@eyeball2452 @jenovaschilld As a programmer: an SSD would not help rendering whatsoever, other than texture pop-in (for games installed to the drive). If the renderer blocked for disk i/o (even flash) at all it would look like a slideshow.

@TheAgingGamer @buccomatic

Yeah i get you - the buttons do not have to be crazy like the psp2 but something added underneath would be nice. I know console makers are constantly wanting to make games for kids and grandparents and are afraid to add buttons. but really we grew up on this stuff, It took only hours for me (and millions) to learn the controls for COD.

@buccomatic I've thought about buttons underneath before but I am not sure it would be very comfortable. Better force feedback and maybe some feedback in the control sticks could be cool. As for the LCD, I don't think that's necessary. Most people have some form of device with a touchscreen, so expanding their SmartGlass functionality might be better and more cost effective.

I would actually like to see a new controller.

Do not get me wrong I think the XBOX 360 is about as perfect a controller you can get.

But that is 7 yrs old tech and for 40-50$ per controller I think we should see some improvements.

Screw gimmicks- like motion or tablets or whatever marketers are getting companies to add.

- I would like to see blue tooth added- I think it is more sensitive and uses less power.

- I personally would like to see the controller slightly bigger or contoured better to accommodate adult sized hands.

- A small touch LCD screen added in the middle, not to use with some gimmicky game crap like the wii u, but to allow increased sensitivity settings for all buttons and controls, outside of the game.

- More silicon used in buttons, points, thumbsticks, etc.

- No true gamer cares about glowy controllers, but some mild external lighting adding non critical information like battery, setups, or guidance,

- Im sorry I still love vibration, that has to be added also. Maybe even advanced.

Oh AND as long as you bring the games, new IPs, and great content/functionality.

The consumer will never care about the look, size, and color of the console.

@jenovaschilld I agree with most of that but I'm still not sure it needs an LCD. Some haptic feedback in the control sticks could be cool, though. And more serious vibration like in the original Xbox would be nice.

@TheAgingGamer I was thinking more like the old dreamcast lcd screen and not a million pixel eye color apple screen. Big enough to change and control functions on the controller itself, maybe even to show weird stats in a game (not something you would hold up to your face during a race).

Yes there are some pc controllers out with more enhanced vibration I think would be nice. Not jump off the table vibration, but able to tell you if you were hit by a pebble not a bullet.

@netter99 This is a console.. and 8gb actually allot more than what you need to play games with on PC but yeah consoles use ram in a different way. Go see the specs for the PS3 and 360 and than come back and say the same thing with a straight face.

The point is the OP said "you can't play games with 8 gb of RAM" and that is clearly not the case. 8GB of RAM will ensure that games start shipping with the higher resolution textures built in, but even the most advanced texture packs out there (which are only available for a select few titles) rarely require more than 8 gigs. But don't forget, your PC with 8GB of RAM is also using at least 512MB for the OS (probably more) not to mention what it is using for other background tasks. As I'm writing this, all I have open is Chrome, my firewall, the Dropbox client and the performance monitor, and I'm using 2.10 GB right there. 8 gigs should be enough for decent gaming, though I wouldn't want it to be any lower than that conisdering they'll stretch this cycle out for another 10 years probably.

@ispytheworld @Volgin @Lane_McNair @Bad_Ass_Dr_Funk @TheAgingGamer @netter99 I have not seen where Skyrim requires set 8gb of ram to run, oh well maybe some hd mods, like the poster said. But we are talking about a very niche need.

And hopefully this next console cycle will not linger about for 7 yrs like this one has.

@buccomatic Hmm interesting proposition. So the index fingers would control the triggers while the middle finger would handle the bumper? Because right now I still use my index on the trigger, which prevents me from using both buttons simultaneously..you might have something there.
