Xbox's Project Scorpio Will Be Unveiled At E3 2017, Phil Spencer Confirms

More details on Scorpio to come.

Today, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer announced on the official Xbox website that Microsoft will indeed reveal Project Scorpio in its entirety at E3 this year. Spencer had this to say:

"With Project Scorpio, we created a console with the goal of being the ultimate place for developers to realize their visions and the best place to play any Xbox game...We’re excited to unveil Project Scorpio and the amazing game experiences it powers at E3 this June."

Among the details missing so far are the console's final design, official name, and price tag. We could also see more games running on the hardware at the expo. For now, we only know of the hardware specifications which were revealed earlier this month.

Scorpio will be equipped with an eight-core CPU clocked at 2.3 GHz, a GPU capable of six teraflops, and 12 GB of GDDR5 system memory with 326 GB/s bandwidth. It's expected to be 43% faster than the PlayStation 4 Pro, and 4.5 times faster than the Xbox One.

Project Scorpio was seen running the Forzatech engine, which is used in Forza Motorsport 6 and Forza Horizon 3. The demo was running native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (FPS) while only using 70% of its GPU power. When cranking up the graphics settings, it maintained 60 FPS while using 88% of the GPU.

Xbox honestly needs a total reboot. I would be fine if this thing can play games that my current Xbox One can't, because right now Xbox in its current form is a dumpster fire.

@jlenoconel: they already showed off the specs. it's roughly equivalent with a high-mid range gaming pc, and when it's released it will be the most powerful console on the market.

@sealionact: either because they dont want people to get scared off because its too much, or because they don't want people to get scared off when it's actually more than that. Plus if they hold off the pricing information until the official announcement, when there's a buying frenzy they get to point to that and use that as an explanation as to why it is as much as it is.

The Xbox ecosystem shits all over playstation, always has. And for all the talk that playstation has all the exclusives and Xbox doesn't have enough I'd take Gears, Halo, and Forza all day long before the so called heavy hitters for playstation. UC is way over rated and so is TLOU. TLOU is not even close to being one of the best games ever like a lot of ponies like to spout and would have you believe.

Scorpio is simply a beast. The difference in power between Scorpio and piss poor pro is greater than the difference between ps4 and X1 and it'll be plain to see. Can't wait to here all the pony excuses. Remember when resolution was everything? Oh, it's not so important anymore you say? How convenient. Scorpio is gonna make piss poor pro look like a waste of time and I for one love it. Eat some humble pie ponies.?✌️

43% difference.. yeah we'll just have to wait and see about that. When the realities of the architecture kicks in if they get 15% more graphical performance over the PS4 I'll eat my shoe. What does 15% look like, it'll look exactly the same as PS4 Pro. So lets wait until we see a multitude of games running on this, instead of waving statistics about how in a perfect situation of multiplying two numbers together the GPU doesn't lose any cycles.

@Lach0121: I bet $399.99, Microsoft has to compete, Plus there should be a pre-order for a AAA titles with the console and i'm not sure it's Crackdown. Halo re re release MC complete ...r edition?

If they put a price over the 399.99 you could, build a Ryzen 5 system cheaper.

@Popa2caps: You cannot build a Ryzen 5 system with anything like the features and hardware of a 399.99 Scorpio. Gamespot's budget gaming rig at 700 bucks still doesn't have a 4k uhd drive, Windows or a joypad included.

@sealionact: The next console from Microsoft is just a RX 480 with Gddr5. We still need news on vega GPU's from AMD. I'm not buying in to console hype anymore. Consoles are just off the shelf parts sold at a higher cost to the unknowing parties.

It might be the most powerful console ever made (for 7 months), but the power draw will be crazy. You could buy a pc for 700 and save by the power bill alone, and the cost of Xbox Live.

Who doesn't have a copy of windows? Whats wrong with people

@Popa2caps: Unless you're talking about pirate copies, I don't think many people have a spare copy of Windows lying around. You buy a prefabricated PC, you get a copy of Windows - for that PC. Build one yourself, and you don't.
Power draw? Xbox 1 draws less than half of what the 360 did, and the same saving goes for the PS4 over the PS3. You're talking about 70 -100 watts....hardly crazy, and Xbox live is like 60 bucks a year, which includes something like 36 free games.

Anyway, your point about a comparable Ryzen system for less than 400 bucks is nonsense and you won't match the specs and hardware of Scorpio even for the 700 bucks you jumped up to...as Gamespot showed.

@Popa2caps: After seeing that video you linked, why would I want to game on anything but a console? You need two Pcs to install an oem version, meaning you'll have issues with ms support when you want to upgrade the internals or pay double the oem price for retail.

Regardless, you still haven't explained how I get a PC with Scorpio specs including a 4k blu ray, Windows and joypad for $700 .... never mind less than $399 as you initially stated.

@jlenoconel: I'm glad you enjoy them. However, I don't see the point in spending so much money on a powerful gaming rig, if you're only going to play free indie niche titles on it. If youre not doing that, you're paying for titles like console players...

@usmc_jesse: MS considered a separate show. Instead, DF was invited to check it out and report more and more findings until E3. The games at the 6/11 show will probably all be run on Scorpio.

@usmc_jesse: Gotcha. It was suggested but never confirmed. Looks like Scorpio details will get rolled out slowly up until E3. The first major phase being the DF article last week, with more details to follow. Then maybe 10 minutes at E3 to show the shell and a brief overview with all the major bullet points, and any withheld details. There's a good chance the price will be revealed. The majority of the time will remain for games. Could be a dual purpose, debuting each game on Scorpio, running on dual displays (1080p and 4K), and toggling available display modes.
