Xbox's Project Scorpio Will Be Unveiled At E3 2017, Phil Spencer Confirms

More details on Scorpio to come.

Today, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer announced on the official Xbox website that Microsoft will indeed reveal Project Scorpio in its entirety at E3 this year. Spencer had this to say:

"With Project Scorpio, we created a console with the goal of being the ultimate place for developers to realize their visions and the best place to play any Xbox game...We’re excited to unveil Project Scorpio and the amazing game experiences it powers at E3 this June."

Among the details missing so far are the console's final design, official name, and price tag. We could also see more games running on the hardware at the expo. For now, we only know of the hardware specifications which were revealed earlier this month.

Scorpio will be equipped with an eight-core CPU clocked at 2.3 GHz, a GPU capable of six teraflops, and 12 GB of GDDR5 system memory with 326 GB/s bandwidth. It's expected to be 43% faster than the PlayStation 4 Pro, and 4.5 times faster than the Xbox One.

Project Scorpio was seen running the Forzatech engine, which is used in Forza Motorsport 6 and Forza Horizon 3. The demo was running native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (FPS) while only using 70% of its GPU power. When cranking up the graphics settings, it maintained 60 FPS while using 88% of the GPU.

Games, Microsoft. You have to deliver the games. Sony is killing you here. I'm not a fan of one particular piece of plastic over the other, but exclusives are my main deciding factor when buying consoles since I play anything multi-platform on PC. The only great console exclusive on Xbox One imo is Sunset Overdrive. They need more new risky IP like that. Halo/Gears/Forza is well and good, but there must be more. Give us something crazy like Horizon or Bloodborne. Seriously invest in epic single player experiences. Fancy Xbox hardware means nothing if I'm playing the new hotness on PC and PS4.

@Zicoroen: want the best experience go Scorpio? PC is still far and away better than Scorpio this is what I don't get why pay a premium for a limited device? The other consoles I get because they are cheap at least on pc I can tailor it to my needs such as I don't want 4k so I'll use ultrawide and still have better framerates I mean people are jumping the gun aren't they at least wait until we've seen actually demanding games running on it rather than forza

@uchihasilver: I don't get that you don't get that people would prefer a console over PC gaming.... maybe you don't agree, but you can't see how a cheaper, better looking (Yes, It's a pretty safe assumption) unit, that has parity with other online gamers and fewer stability problems is a better option?

@uchihasilver: You don't want the best experience and that's ok. But do not reduce the world to the view you have of it. Many gamers want the BEST and PC barely can provide it at an affordable price. Scorpio may provide that.

By the way, just remember that "PC Master Race" is bullshit. Less than 1% of its users play 4K or "ultra" settings. Most of time it's just another "console" like, but with bad online network (must pay for good ones) and cheaters. Want the BEST gaming experience? Go Scorpio.

@Zicoroen: I play at 1440p and Ultra settings. It doesn't make sense to quote percentages without total number of users. Also, that is just anybody who installed Steam, and there's a huge overlap between low-mid end PC users and console types.

One reason myself and others haven't gone to 4K on PC is because your options narrow at the top end. Console-only people largely buy based on Best Buy bullet points placed before them on a placard; they understand little of performance and demand less. Higher end tech people, who buy the better TVs, PC components, monitors, cars, Scorpio, are more discerning. We need more information about feature sets capabilities and caveats of a device before purchasing.

So buying a 4K monitor for your PC seems simple to a console person. I assure you, finding the monitor you want is not simple. I have a ASUS MG278Q I bought 2+ years ago for $580. Free-sync 35-90 frame range, 144 Hz, 2560x1440, IPS, 4 ms refresh, Display port, 27", etc. Those specs were simply not available in 4K. I also want HDR and a wider free sync range, but concessions must be made. OLED monitor screens were not available, either. If you used a TV, you have to worry about frame rate and input lag.

Next, you have to drive the monitor. Crossfire and the like give better scaling today, sure. A single card option is preferred. The 1080 has only been available for about 1 year, and the 1080Ti only recently. Gaming at 30 fps at any resolution is simply unacceptable on PC. So the demand for processing power is more than double what passes on consoles. That is why less people adopt 4K on PC.

@theduckofdeath: Yes, I know that. The debate with the other guy was his delusional view about playing with better performance than most consoles. The reality is just the oposite.

And right now Scorpio can bring a much better experience than PC gaming majority, with 4K and high performance. Hypocrisy is the problem when the PC gamer don't play 4k 60fps and say he's the best, but despises a console that can do that.

@uchihasilver: Your argument kind of falls apart right here. The test ran at 66% with 4K assets, not X1 1080p assets. That same test also ran at 88% with settings on par with the ultra settings for Forza 6 Apex.

This does not indicate that every game will run 4K/60, but it did run Forza at 4K/60 a lot easier than many of us expected it to, and I think it's an indication that 4K/30 is a target that many developers will be able to hit.

Not saying you're not entitled to your opinion on console vs pc, but if the information you're basing your argument on is false, then everything after this point is invalid and holds no value.

You stated 70% usage ... using Xbox One assets. A 30 second fact check on eurogamer.net determined that was incorrect.

Basically we need to wait and see what this thing actually does with games other than Forza since it can be ran on a potato also I don't trust anyone talking about it when they had "exclusive access" that's usually not a good thing .

Don't get me wrong it's awesome for console players if it really can achieve it but gaming companies have tended to lie to us A LOT

@uchihasilver: In a way that's just another way of saying what I said originally. What they did with Forza was better than expected and may indicate that 4K/30 is an achievable target for most other devs. Not saying every dev should hit that target. I know Forza at 1080/60 on X1 isn't a 'huge' deal. But they did say that using 4k assets and ultra settings ran at 88% with no optimization. They also stated that 1080/60 on X1 Forza ran at 88%, the same exact usage.

While X1 may not have hit 1080/30 as often as PS4, it did have quite a few games that got there. And the ones that did not were bottlenecked by a slower cpu and less memory bandwidth due to esram being a total pain to work with and the slower ddr3. Scorpio will be easier to develop for and has a massive bump in memory bandwidth as well as system level optimization for DX12 on board. I think those two upgrades will play a bigger role in performance than the cpu/gpu. Having a big fast cpu/gpu is nice, but useless without the bandwidth to keep them fed. And the integrated DX12 calls on the GPU will play a pretty big role in

Using that 88% usage I mentioned earlier I think it's fairly easy to predict that a fair amount of games on Scorpio will hit 4K/30 and we'll see those results more often than we saw 1080/30 on X1. I don't see a lot of 4K/60 games on Scorpio outside of a few racing games and those that choose to do 1440/60 and upscale. Not based on what Forza could do with Scorpio in their test, just how other games did compared to Forza on X1 and scaling the system based on those results.

I don't expect Scorpio to provide an experience better than PC gaming, especially for those who are legit PC gamers. I do think it'll get consoles a lot closer the PC performance than any console has been since 2006.

Also, I don't see the lying problem as exclusive to gaming companies. I think it's just a matter of us understanding the product pretty well making it easier to identify

@suicidesn0wman: I'd say the most disappointing fact of the Scorpio is frame rates won't improve at 1080p because they will use downsampling I think MS and Sony are listening to the wrong audience tbh it seems they are listening to the shouting match between fanboys where as the actual gamers want better frame rates at 1080p I just hope 3rd party devs listen . . . So many fanboys say they don't care about 60fps+ but I bet if it was a standard they would miss it when it's gone xD

@uchihasilver: The way I've heard it sounds like that's up to the developers. If they want to offer 1080/60 instead of 4k/30(or somewhere in between) or even super sampled 1080/30, they can offer it. All of the options are available to the developer willing to provide them.

That said, I don't really think the developers are going to offer a lot of options. How is it in the PC landscape? Do they usually offer multiple res/fps options or do they tend to dictate the experience to you more often than not?

I know Project Cars gave us sliders to adjust graphic settings and us consoles gamers were like 'wtf do we do with this?' lol

@suicidesn0wman: pretty much all games on PC have multiple graphics settings to cater to what people want I use ultrawide at 75fps myself they also usually let you choose a cap for fps unless of course they just lock it to 30 which is usually because of a console port and very little effort put in but its not too common these days

Read Eurogamer's articles and learn more about what Scorpio can give you: Forza 6 was just a demo and the transition to Scorpio took 2 days only (auto), without updates or improvements. Even so, used just 66% of the console power in stress moments.

If you're a guy that don't want 4K, the Scorpio makes the best supersampling for 1080p screens so far.

But there's more: DX12 built in, FreeSync, HDMI 2.1 etc.

Stop crying and wake up from your nightmare playing Pac Man in a your machine that can't provide 4K, or your beloved COD after renting dedicated servers (and paying for cheater's fest).

It all depends on what you like to play. For me my PS4 sits there not doing anything for so long that I unplugged it. Sure it has some exclusives I like but if it's on Xbox that's what I'm going to play it on. Another big factor is the controller, the X1 feels better for me and I play better with it's design (staggered sticks).

I'd rather play Halo, Gears, Crackdown, Sunset Overdrive, quantum, Forza and the rest of the Xbox exclusives over Remastered Uncharted and Last of Us for the 3rd time and I'm not into Japanese designed type RPG's games. @Myron117: People are talking about those games, but they're only buying Zelda and Horizon. People don't want "risky games". MS tried it - they released a major RTS which PS4 doesn't have, and it failed to sell. Persona 5 dropped out of the charts after a single week, Nier basically flopped on PS4 with under 500,000 sales. Bayonetta 3? People are talking about it in the same vein that they're talking about Half Life 3 .... it might happen, but it's doubtful. Unless you know something I don't.

That's good news and hopefully they not only show it up, they also give us every other single details that still missing about the console because they haven't say anything about the Scorpio HDD and what type of HDD is going to have. I have seen some other website stating that is going to have a SSD but is highly unlikely as it will drive the price really high.

The hard drive is also situated in the system with dampeners to absorb vibration and reduce errors rates and optimal data throughput.

i want to see what features it has increased mod size limits,backwards compatable with original xbox games (ps2,xbox gen),improvments to current xbox one games,what are the improvments for older hd tv 720p and 1080p,what vr headsets works on it psvr oculus etc,and games from ms a single player fable 4 would be good
