You Can Now Sell Skyrim Mods on Steam

Users now able to list their wares and set prices for whatever they want to make--mods, items, or maps.

Valve on Thursday rolled out a new Steam Workshop feature that lets people charge for their Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim mods. The program launches today with Bethesda's popular role-playing game while other supported titles will be announced in the coming weeks.

As part of the new program, anyone now has the opportunity to list their creations--mods, items, or maps--at whatever price they want (they can even change prices after release), or they can offer them for free just like before. And per the terms of Valve's user agreement, anyone not satisfied with their purchase can get a full refund, provided they file their refund request within 24 hours.

Steam users have had the ability to sell their items through the Steam Workshop for years now--creators have even earned $57 million since 2011 doing so--but this was limited to Valve games like Team Fortress 2 and DOTA 2, among others. Only in January this year did Valve announce plans to open this up to third-party games.

The difference here that Skyrim is the first game with an open market--neither Bethesda nor Valve will have a hand in determining pricing or curation.

In its own statement, Valve's Tom Bui said: "User-generated content is an increasingly significant component of many games, and opening new avenues to help financially support those contributors via Steam Workshop will help drive the level of UGC to new heights."

No Caption Provided

As for why Valve is launching the new program with Skyrim, it might have something to do with the enduring popularity of the game and its devoted (and creative) players. There are currently more than 24,000 free Skyrim mods available in the game's Steam Workshop page, and these have seen more than 170 million downloads to date, Valve said. It will be up to the creators of these mods to determine if they want to keep them available for free or set a price for them.

"Modding has been important to all our games for such a long time," Bethesda wrote on its website. "We try to create worlds that come alive and you can make your own, but it's in modding where it truly does. Thanks again for all your incredible support over the years. We hope steps like this breathe new life into Skyrim for everyone."

You can see all the available paid (and free) Skyim mods here. More information about the new Steam Workshop paid mod functionality, including a comprehensive FAQ, is available on Steam's website.

In conjunction with this news, Bethesda has announced that it's updated the Skyrim Creation Kit--the game's free mod tools--with new features aimed at supporting the new paid mods. This includes things like the ability to upload master files, the removal of filesize limit restrictions, and more.

Not all Skyrim players are jumping for joy at the news that people can now charge for mods, however. One Steam user writes in the Skyrim forums, "Charging for a mod is wrong and should not be done." Someone else added: "Beyond ****ed up, Gaben has reached a new low."

For its part, Valve says: "By paying for mods and supporting the people that made them, you enable those artists and creators to continue working on their mods and inspire new modders to try their hand in creating new, higher quality items and experiences."

@turbojugend16: Should've seen the red flag when they changed the workshop not long ago to support mods larger than 100mb. Especially for an older game like Skyrim and the change just came out of the blue.

@digitm64@turbojugend16: I think the mod support for this game is just insane (in a good way), considering its age. Is it ever going to stop?

I wouldn't even enjoy this game if it weren't for the mods.

@SoulScribe@warriors30@digitm64@turbojugend16: I don't know if I can believe that. It'll definitely affect mod development for FO3 and New Vegas, but why would it affect Skyrim? They're different games after all. Plus the mod support for Skyrim is stronger than for both of these games combined.

@warriors30@SoulScribe@warriors30@digitm64: Well, like how FO3 slowed down the Oblivion modding community. People tend to move on when a newer game that offers the same features is available. Not saying it'll stop completely, but a lot of the modders will migrate.

May seem terrible, But I can see a-lot more awesome mods being created, Some rivaling good DLC's. Project Nevada was a great addition to FONV, I feel like it should've cost something, 5-10bucks even. The creators put in a lot of devoted time for an awesome experience for no cost. Just an example I thought of.

@nivekmz33: I can see tons upon tons of people straight up stealing mods and putting them on sale. I can see Valve forcing people to sell mods even if they don`t want to. I can see cool mods which use other IP`s going away.

@aiat_gamer@nivekmz33: "Chesko's Fishing Mod" it's already getting removed for using other's IP without permission, in less then one day.

This will get out of hand tremendously fast. Steam workshop is probably the wrost moderated place.

I'm kind of concerned about this. This is only questioning the definition of a mod. Am I supposed to buy a DLC which will probably have compatibility issues and unfinished? Just add a ''donation'' button. Problem solved

And that's where I was when the revolution started. By year's end we were seeing the chief conspirators and their hapless pawns with their guillotined heads on spikes. Gaben, once a symbol for their prosperity, soon became a symbol of oppression when he decided to advance his own prosperity at the detriment of those supported him.

Old heroes would be cast down on that day, and Valve, the gamer's champion, became another EA or Ubisoft: forever destroyed by their own greed.

@Verenti: Fact is that have payware contents from modders is fine and I'm even ok with that (also because there are thousands of hundreds ready to do high quality mods for free, so I'm not worried about my wallet).

What makes me upset is that just the 25% goes to the original creators and it's ridicolous. I mean for what sake of reasons the game devs & valve need to get 75% of the income from the mod? Valve ain't doing a sh**, it's just mirroring game files and original devs already got they bucks selling their game. That should be most likly the way around, 85% goes to modders and 15 goes to who the hell needs to go.

If we are there in this situation is because people could be really such stupid to buy a mod knowing that much 3/4 are going to big companies, and not the modders it self.
If we are in this situation is because modders aint getting supported via donation. If you want this to stop, donate guys! whenever you can, when you have 5$ spare bucks, donate them to your favourite mod!

Yet another step in the wrong direction. I'm so glad I'm not as big a fan of videogames as I used to be. I used to buy 3-4 games a month back in the day, down to 1 every other month. occasionally 1 a month.

@nothingformoney: Its a bump in the road. Valve and Steam did not exist before, and PC gaming was (arguably) at it's best, then. Not saying they have contributed to any decline, just saying they were not needed.

Should Valve/Steam alienate enough people, another distribution platform will arise.

75% to Valve, all they are doing is hosting. They aren't even doing the hard work. How could they sleep at night? I do believe that a modder should receive something for his/her work, we all should receive payment for doing work. Just think it should be a better percentage.

What concerns me is mods that use licenced work. For example lightsaber mods, they didn't get looked at because they were free, however now using a Star Wars item and making money from it is a reason for companies such as Disney to start looking more closely at the mod scene. But I guess if Steam is taking 75% of the cut, Steam will cover 75% of the lawsuit.

Also what's to stop you from grabbing a mod off Nexus and selling it on Steam even if the work isn't yours.
One other thing is I could see more experienced modders come onto the scene and actually create topclass mods if they see potential for making an income from it.
This will all come down to the consumer taking a stand though, there are a lot of mods like horse armor that should never be at a cost.

@digitm64: Some mods on nexus are already being taken down by the authors. I also see no way to verify that the person selling the mod created it. What a nightmare. Now if you are a modder, you will have to constantly check and recheck to see if someone is stealing your work for profit. You won't even have time to do what you care for, improving a game you love for the benefit of the ones who feel as you do.

@digitm64@megeetsa: Look, I agree that people should get paid for their work if they so desire. My biggest issues are that Steam is taking 75% of the money, and the theft of ones hard work. I don't have an issue with paying for someones work, I just don't like the cashgrab from Steam and Bethesda (who I heard is sharing those profits). I also think there will be people stealing said work for their profit. This is a can of worms that may will kill one of the best parts of PC gaming. One other thing. The 24 hour refund goes to your Steam wallet so Steam profits anyway.

I can see a day where Steam DRM will only allow workshop mods to work on steam games. PC gamers have always had a mod community, a labor of love. This money grab by Steam and Bethesda (75% of the money to them?) is a money grubbing nightmare. I PC game for the freedom it has. I didn't pay the $$$ I did for my rig to turn it into a cash cow for distributors. Next will be $60 for the base game and $100 for the 1080p or 4K version.Bad enough Developers hand us day one DLC for more $$$, Now they want to profit from other peoples work. If they want to allow pay for mods, then at least the majority of the money should go to the people who made the mod. Bethesda made the game moddable on purpose so people would still buy the game, now they want to back end profit from the very thing that keeps people buying a years old game. How greedy and sad. Guess I should buy an XBONE and join the sheeple.

I read into this a lot, and I must say that, personally, I do not see ANY good side to this; this is the exact opposite of a mutually beneficial relationship, with the consumer likely to get the shaft.

Not to mention that this goes against EVERYTHING the mod community [I would think] stands for; developing, as a hobby, additional content for a game you love, to be shared with the people that share your love for the game.

Greenlight and Early Access are bad enough, do we REALLY need this, too?

This would have to be the dumbest thing to have developed in gaming. And they say you can get a refund within 24 hours, I have a hard enough time getting a refund for an actual game. Steam somehow think it's okay to put the money back into a Steam Wallet, not back to your credit card. I will never purchase a mod, hopefully the same mods stay at Nexus. Otherwise the industry will start seeing mods being pirated.
Bethesda and Steam will also now be liable for the mods since they are generating money from it.

@chuckles471@digitm64: pretty much this; I would be interested in what sort of quality control Steam is putting into this.

*sigh* Only in video games could a company get away with this. Let's apply the same principle to, oh I dont know....cars?

"Yeah so your factory car is all set, but we have some third party modifications we offer that we profit off of, but we are not 100% sure are compatable."

"Uh sure, I'll try out the _____ modification to my car"

"Great, that'll be 900 dollars. And remember, if your not happy within one day, you can return it for a full refund"

----------

Yeah, only in video games would such a thing happen.

@chuckles471@digitm64: Here's some info:
Isoku, Author of wet and cold, originally released his mod on the Nexus. The original version had good meshes & textures which were resources from other modders and optimal script that was handled by the skyrim script extender. Since he released the new version, he had to replace the all the borrowed assets with lower quality meshes and textures that he made himself (which he isn't good with being a coder and all) as well as his own downgraded script that is much more buggy to remain independent from the script extender. So much for "improved quality"...

I like it, really! It's great that modders can sell their work on Steam. It makes sen... wait a sec, what? Creators get just the 25% of the income. All the rest goes between Valve and BSG.

This is not "allowing creators to sell mod", this is a dirty way for developers and valve to get money from modders.

This is horrible and I hope modders will not agree with these terms, becasue if they do, it will be like trow gasoline on fire, and the videogame business ( which is already ridicolous thanks to EA and Ubi) will just become even worse.
