YouTuber Exposed for Misleading Viewers Releases Apology Video, Deletes It After Negative Response

Martin says he wasn't happy with it and deleted it.

On July 5, YouTube star Trevor "TmarTn" Martin was revealed to have been promoting a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive skin gambling website called CSGOLotto in his videos without disclosing he owned it. Following the backlash, Martin published an apology video but took it down just a few hours later after receiving an overwhelmingly negative response from the community.

The video, which has been archived and is available to watch below, has been described as a non-apology and criticised for its lack of sincerity, as well as a failure on Martin's part to acknowledge and take responsibility for his action. The allegations levelled at Martin include a failure to disclosure his involvement with the website and enabling minors to engage in illegal gambling.

In the video, Martin stated that his stake in CSGOLotto has always been on record.

"My connection to CSGOLotto has been a matter of public record since the company was first organised in December 2015," he said. "However, I do feel like I owe you guys an apology. I'm sorry to each and every one of you that felt like that was not made clear enough to you."

In many of the offending CS:GO skin gambling videos, Martin doesn't explicitly disclose he is owner of CSGOLotto, the website he used to gamble and win money on. Instead he promoted the site as just a user.

"We found this new site called CSGOLotto," Martin said in one video. "We were betting on it today and I won a pot ... it was the coolest feeling ever."

In his apology video he continued on to emphasise CSGOLotto has been in compliance with the law.

"I do not condone minors under the age of 18 to use CSGOLotto," he continued. "This is and always has been a clearly stated policy in the terms of service as well as the initial sign-up page on the website."

Martin spends the majority of the apology video telling fans that he loves them.

"You guys seriously mean the world to me. You've changed my life in so many ways. I'll never be able to thank you for what you've done. Thank you guys for all the support over the years and I'm so grateful for each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart."

The comments for the video were focused on drawing attention to the illegality of Martin's actions, goading him with mentions of the Federal Trade Commission, and generally poking fun at the dodging of issues.

Martin banned a number of users posting negative comments and, eventually, deleted the video entirely. When asked why on Twitter, said he wasn't pleased with how it turned out.

Someone I've never heard of and don't care about preying on people who place too much importance on random people on the internet? Honestly, these people deserve each other.

@snugglebear: I don't think you know what this is all about. These people were owners of a CS:GO gambling site and promoted it on their youtube channels without telling people they owned it. They got people to gamble their skins and many of which were <21 yrs old. They lied and used their audiences.

If you think those people deserved it you're completely delusional. No one deserves to get hoodwinked into gambling, especially younger people.

There's a reason gambling laws are in place as well as the FTC guidelines for disclosing promotional videos.

@Stiler: No, I was aware of the particulars of the story. He deserves to be indicted for fraud on a federal level. But blindly following the advice of someone who makes money by selling themselves to people on the internet is not, nor will it ever be, an even marginally sane thing to do. And, you know, just don't equate the word "gamble" with "receive things for free at no risk."

@snugglebear: I think when they use the term "gamble," it is based on the fact there are sites where you can sell skins for actual money, akin to cashing in chips at a casino. If it was all free skin trading I don't think any of this would be an issue.

I dont see how he helped minors gamble if its illegal for minors to gamble. Did he teach them to steal money from their parents? Or open up a credit card or bank account?

@iandizion713: The thing is, since it isn't "technically" gambling, the age restriction and access is different. You only need to be 13 years old to have a Steam account and trade your items, and much like fantasy football sites claimed their game wasn't sports betting, the claim is these are just games trading game items. Kids didn't have to prove their age with credit cards or other ID; they just had to check a box to enjoy the delicious forbidden fruit of gambling like their favorite TmarTn was enjoying.

@iandizion713: his target audience included minors I believe.

I'm not sure about the legal aspect or what sort of regulations but I believe it works in the same manner in which you can't advertise alcohol during a childrens television show.

@RicanV: While true, shat happens. Bunch of Youtubers play games and drank alcohol while doing it on Stream. Nintendos Creators Program helped put a stop to a bunch, but its still a problem. The curse words, the sexual talk, its all pretty bad. Even PewDiePie who is most popular still has issues with his language.

@txuzai: I guess he was smart enough not to post a clearly disingenuous "apology" video.

@txuzai: He's also getting a lot of hate but he's the secondary scammer. Trevor is the primary scammer as he owns CSGOlotto.

I am intrigued by the absolute lack of... interesting articles on GS. Seriously, who gives a damn?

(Further explanation: Gambling may or may not be illegal depending on where you live and how old you are, but there will always be guys who try bending the rules. I'm also pointing the finger at the minors. To GS and fellow rational people: just ignore that crap.)

He wasn't obliged to apologise at all, even if it wasn't a sincere one. Do we really need to force someone to apologise to us to make us feel better about ourselves? And if the apology is forced, then it's not exactly valid, is it?
