The scale of the plot takes away some of the magic.

This was my first Final Fantasy game, I had heard so much about this game series that I had to at least play one of the installments and I opted to go for the latest one.

On one hand I can see the appeal, it's a beautifully designed game, the graphics are amazing, the motion capture is great, solid gameplay and of course it starts out with an intriguing and good storyline.
However a lot of its elements threw me off a little bit, starting with the gameplay, while its for the most part a smooth ride, the camera design feels a bit stiff at times and also while I don't necessarily enjoy hard games I felt that the combat at some point is just spamming the attack button while making some dodges as the automatic abilities do its damage, it felt repetitive in that sense and the overall combat became so easy that it took a little bit of the suspense and eagerness to find stronger opponents.

The side missions became really boring really fast, I simply gave up on them and just wanted to wrap up the main plot. While the characters are interesting they were a bit cliched, the classic good vs evil, the two dimensional approach felt a bit blend. And now the aspect of the game that I felt the most conflicted with: the size of the plot...
In most scenarios ironically this would be an amazing aspect, it feels almost like an odyssey, when you think you've reached the "last enemy" or that the plot is closer to its end, another reveal is made that further expands the lore. Sounds great right? Well in this game no... at least not for me. I felt the expansion was a bit stretched to the point where I actually stopped caring about where the plot was going.

The tone of the game throughout its run is fairly soft, although it has some dark moments here and there, but it doesn't connect well with how it ends, the ending felt a bit off and unnecessary.
This is of course my personal take, if you don't connect with the story you will have, as I did, a bit of a hard time as the cut scenes are really, really long... again, for me if the story was different this would've been a plus, I actually really enjoy games with a cinematic approach I don't mind cut scenes, but for this game in particular there were many boring ones.

A solid game, but to me at the end of the day a bit overrated.
