I found the music in the original ME to be a lot more memorable, almost every single tune haunted my brain even after I turned off.

ME2´s score was still quite a bit above average, but did not have nearly as many fantastic songs.

And why did they get rid of the timeless piano riff from ME1? The one that appears on several tracks like "din-dun-dun-dun-DUN-DUN":

Also, why did they drop the super-atmospheric normandy music?

Admittedly the music doesnt really bother me in a video game except in final fantasy so my views arent worth much but I actually remember songs from the first game unlike the second.

I like the music in ME2 better, actually...well, at least the Suicide Mission and End Run tracks...I think they're better than anything from the first game...I also like this track...it plays when you get the new Normandy and again at the end of the game...

The original Normandy theme is in the first moment of ME2...just before the Normandy is attacked...I'm guessing they left that music out of the new Normandy because it's a different ship...

I also liked Vigil's theme from the first game...it played during the meeting with Vigil on Ilos and on the Start screen...but that was also in ME2 when you met with Ashley/Kaiden...

Hmm. On a second listen, the "suicide mission" music actually incorporates a lot of the melodies from ME1. A good thing IMO, as those melodies were awesome.

While the second game's music isn't terrible, the music from the first game is one of my all time favorite video game soundtracks. The music from the second game is your basic sci fi adventure type soundtrack with some riffs from the first score.

Despite both ME games are part of my fav games i'm not a fan of its music, i mean i like it but that's it, it's not like Silent Hill soundtracks, which i really love. Still there are two songs i really like from ME, first is a song from Therum (the action song) and the credits theme, both from ME1, they are really good

I think that the music in ME seems more serene and removed (just the way the game is compared to ME2) where as in ME2 the music also represents the game being darker and grittyer. I especially liked the theme from the end credits from ME2 which I thought was pretty spectacular.

Damn, made me think there, good post. Looking back, one of the things I loved the most about ME1 is that removed, serene mood.

As for gritty, here´s a little something I wrote on another site:

I love the 80's feel to the music. I found the music great in both but ME1 had that cool 8) song n the credits. Sounded like part David Bowie and part U2. Shame you couldn't play it on the sound device in Sheps quarters in ME2. I was born in 1984 so I remember that style of sound fondly.

I've got the words :)

I have wondered about you
Where will you be when this through
If all goes as planned
Will you redeem my life again?

Fire the fields the weed is sown
Water down your empty soul
Wake the sea of silent hope
Water down your empty soul

Fight your foes you're on your own
Holy war is on the phone
Asking to please stay on hold
The bleeding loss of blood runs cold

And I need you to recover
Because I can't make it on my own

I enjoy both soundtracks very much.  I will always remember hearing the main theme from the first game for the first time.  The second game has an excellent soundtrack but I will always remember the first more.

After reading everyone's comments (and playing through ME1 again), this question isn't as easy as I first thought...

I like a lot more of the music from the first game...

There's only a few bits of music from ME2 that I enjoy...but I enjoy them a lot...more than anything I heard from the first game...

So:

ME1 - I like more music less

ME2 - I like less music more

...Does that make sense?

It's a though choice, but I must say I do like the music in Mass Effect 2 better, if only for Suicide Mission. But The first Mass Effect has a very epic track as well. :)

I liked the music in the area with Aria better than the music down where the bartender poisons you...

Don't really remember the music where you meet Morinth...

I like the sound effect as you approach the main doors of Afterlife, through the hall - how its all muffled, then you walk through the doors and its loud and consuming. Really does make you feel like you're there!

I think Mass Effect 1 did a great job when it ventured into ambient electronica whereas ME2 did better building on the more tense,adrenaline-racing music. Kinda fits the tone and $tyle of both the games too. I agree that Afterlife's music was amazing and I actually love the part where we walk through the "flame-engulfed" corridor at the entrance of Afterlife. :D

So has anyone gotten the additions to the ME2 Soundtrack? There have been two, Atmospheric, released about a month ago, and Combat, which came out yesterday. They're both really good, in my opinion, and they're pretty cheap so I thought, why not?

Also, sorry if those links don't work for those of you in the UK, Australia or elsewhere, I'm in the US. They're both on Amazon MP3 and iTunes.
