I guess I'm the only one that doesn't like this idea. I see the hype and score-prediction of games as one of the problems with the industry. People decide whether a game is good or not BEFORE they play it (I don't know how that's even possible), and will go completely ape-feces if anybody dares to disagree with them. I think gamers should wait until they've actually played a game before deciding what score it deserves. A hype-o-meter as described here would be encouraging behavior I see as harmful.

Maybe this would work if the focus of the meter was to measure anticipation level rather than projected score. If you went to a gamespace for a game that wasn't out yet you could indicate how much you were anticipating it and that could be averaged into a general interest level for the game, rather than a score prediction.

I can totally see where your angle is but as with most things its up to the user to interpret the data as they see wish. Surely aswell though with the amount of information on games availible to the public these days, not to mention hands on demo its highly plausible to take a pretty good guess at what the final Gamespot review score would be. Even when the final review is out though there will be people out there who will claim that game 'X' is the greatest game ever even when it has been getting very low review scores from many media publications. There is no way of avoiding circumstances like that and i'm not arguing whether they are right or wrong to make a judgement on a game before its release, but surely having one simply to use meter that could determine what Gamespot users thought this game would turn out like, is better than 1000 forum topics on the same subject matter.

Long sentence, appologies :)

As far as anticipation level goes there is already one found on 1up.com and whilst its not illegal to mimic that design an original one that resembles what i've described in my oppinion would be better.

Thanks alot though for your input Pete
