.:: 2008 Canadian GP ::.

Welcome to the 2008 Canadian GP thread, where you can discuss anything to do with this weekend's race. cjek will update the thread with the latest times as they happen.

Photobucket

RANDOM FACT

Fernando Alonso has Finished this race as many times as he's retired from it. 2007 Was his worst placed finish in Canada, ending up 7th.

POINTS OF DISCUSSION

  1. Robert Kubica says he's not worrying over what happened last year - do you feel this statement is entirely true?
  2. Last time out in Monaco, in qualifying, Ferrari beat the McLarens fair and square. Last year, whilst the track still favoured McLaren, Ferrari were closer. What can the Scuderia do this year?
  3. This race is usually a car-breaker - who do you expect to see shine if it is yet another race of incidents?
  4. If this is the weekend Heikki can turn his season around, where do you expect him to be fighting this weekend?
  5. Kubica is only 6 points off the championship lead - how much of a battle do you think he can put up over the course of the year?

There's claims that there could be rain/thunderstorms on all three days - according to my current weather system, I only see chances of light rain tomorrow and nothing else.

Latest forecasts for me show there will be rain today and tomorrow, but Sunday still looks sunny. F1's website says the same, except Sunday, where they still predict thunderstorms.

The streaming (from link above) has started - looks fiarly windy, and the track is damp. Can't tell if it's still raining atm, but clouds are thick above the circuit.

Thank goodness Anthony Davidson isn't around either, as groundhogs roam the circuit atm.

My weather forecast is also showing 'afternoon thunderstorm' for Sunday, and very hot, 31C or 88F. The track is now wet, rather than just damp. Drivers seem to be struggling for grip; Trulli came off in a rather minor way after just a few minutes of the session.

Interesting how, despite all these wet weather claims, neither of the Ferrari or McLaren boys went out in the wet. Frantic final few laps though, Heidfeld & Kubica coming out of nowhere. And we didn't even see Kovalainen's lap!

Red flag in SP - Vettel's smacked the Toro Rosso against the wall.

EDIT: Session re-started at 10:54 Local time. Vettel lost the rear in turn 9 and smashed it against the wall. They've got 6 minutes to put in laps now.

What rotten luck - Vettel's strong showing so far comes for nothing because of his crash, and cannot compete in Qualifying, so he'll start 20th and in the pits. Such a strong weekend it was building up to be as well.

Anyone see the on board of Fisi at the end of Q1? The sidepots (not quite but I can't think of the technical term for it) were wiggling like they were made out of jello.

And I love ITV commentators! "Lewis Hamilton is looking great, but how will the track breaking up affect the teams." Fat stocky guy said that all in one breath. There were a couple of jems in there by white-haired guy, but that was the best.

Very surprising session, but I think Ferarri must be heavier on fuel, and Hamilton, Alonso and Kubica all going lighter to get higher up. Kovalainen and Massa were disappointing to say the least. Not the first time for either of them this season either.

Raikkonen screws up in Monaco, and now Hamilton screws up in Canada. But what a race, Kubica fully deserved victory

Congratulations are well in order for Robert Kubica, and the whole BMW team, for a fantastic race and taking the opportunity when it came. Great race, great performance. Amazing. Unbelievable.

Meanwhile, I am still so irritated by Lewis Hamilton - great chance to improve his Championship lead, and instead he throws it into the back of Kimi. Yeah, it's nice that Kimi gets nout again, but not this way. I'm ashamed Lewis left his brain in the pits there

Lewis ain't so hot no more. ****ing moron. How does someone not see TWO stopped cars and a flashing red light at the end of pit road? "Well if we were in a better pitbox..." I can just see it now. But how did Kimi come out so quick? He was running third.

No, he swerved to the only empty space he could find. He should be penalised 10 grid places in the next race, along with Rosberg, who made exactly the same mistake. There is no excuse for either of them to not see the red light, and end up in the back of other cars.

Very dissapointing for me being a Kimi fan, but big Kudos to BMW and Kubica what a fantastic race for those guys :) I was also pleased on the most part on Vettel's driving managing to keep Kovalainen behind him despite HUGE pressure.

Anyone else pick up on how miffed Heidfeld was at coming second? He seemed really dejected poor fella, but to be honest it was going to be Kubicas day possibly even BEFORE Hamilton went and had a london traffic jam fender bender.

As to why Raikkonen and Kubica got out before Lewis, you heard on the ITV coverage that there was a problem in the stop. Which under good circumstances would have handed the lead to Raikkonen or Kubica dependant on who managed to get outta pits first :D

Just as I suggested, Hamilton and Rosberg have been given 10 place grid penalties for the French Grand Prix (Source: Autosport)

Oh well, at least Kubica's first win is awesome. What a championship!

Khoo, to be perfectly honest I'm not sure what you mean. If you mean a 3 way title fight, we had one last year with Raikkonen, Hamilton and Alonso. In addition, we have a 4 way fight this year with Raikkonen, Hamilton, Massa and Kubica. But I've probably missed your point entirely...

They both made the same mistake; they failed to see the red light and inexcusably crashed into other cars, so they both got the same penalty.
