Brawn GP look set to miss out on as much as £20m in prize money that was owed to the Honda team for their ninth-place finish last season.

It initially seemed that the Brawn team - who maintained most of its Honda characteristics - would be entitled to the winnings, but F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has indicated this is not the case.

Speaking to The Independent, Ecclestone is reported to have said that the Honda winnings "will not be paid to Brawn" and might not "be paid out at all".

The FIA have classed Brawn GP as a new team, and thus they are not necessarily entitled to the winnings. Under the Concorde Agreement, which binds all teams to racing in Formula One, the money should be split between the teams that remain in the sport.

But Ecclestone admits that in the case that the teams cannot come to an agreement on wheather the money should be given to Brawn or split between the teams, then "we can keep it".

The 68-year-old also admitted that he was not particularly enamoured by Brawn GP's change of name.

"I opposed the name Brawn," he said.

"[It's] not a good name, doesn't mean anything to the public, better being Honda than Brawn," he added

OMFG... Will F1 stop being so ****ing bull****ing about politics, Its doing my ****ing head in, Everything is about names, sponsers and deals, and new rules, and Ferrari complaining about everything so the FIA do anything possible to sort it for them... I'm getting sick and god damn ****ing tired of seeing this...

I miss the old days where just simple deals were done for engines, or sponsers, the venues always were secure, and the name of a team did not matter.

Why can't these immense 22 guys on the grid, Just race? just like how they used to? *sigh*

Kipi's rant over.

This is pretty ridiculous and Bernie calling out Brawn over their name?! &#@* you Bernie. The man paid for the team he could put 'Giant Douche GP' or 'Turd Sandwich GP' on the car for all I car. He better be ready to race, and he was!

I'm unconvinced by the argument that because they are a new team, they shouldn't get the money. Technically, it is a new team. But really, it is in name and ownership only, nothing else has changed; the boss, the drivers, the staff, the facilities; it really is the same team. I know it's a 'new entry', so technically they shouldn't be entitled, but surely common sense overrules here. I guess not when Bernie is involved. As always, it's about money.

His comments about the team name are rather hypocritical in fact, because if they were called Honda as he wishes, then not only would the management, the drivers, the staff, the facilities, the car and the drivers be the same as 2008 Honda, the name would also be the same. So he's inadvertently implying that the name change is what makes this team undeserving of the money; maybe he should have thought that one out.

well what happened with all this when certain teams kept changing names every couple of seasons? Jaguar, Jordan, Spyker, Midland F1. They tended to finish in about the position Honda did last season, and due to money ended up changing names several times.

If the decision on whether or not to give the money to Brawn, or share it amongst the other teams is made by those other teams, then surely there is a conflict of interest. What would you rather have? 2m each, or give 20m to the championship leading team? and if they cant agree, the money stays with Bernie :?
