The Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) will wait until the end of this year to decide who will replace Martin Whitmarsh as its chairman.

Although there was speculation last week that Whitmarsh was to step down with immediate effect, sources have denied that there is any change to the original plan of sorting the matter out later this year.

FOTA's chairmanship runs on a rotational basis each season, with Whitmarsh taking over for a 12-moth period from Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo at the end of last year.

It is understood that FOTA is keen for an independent team chief to replace Whitmarsh - with Red Bull Racing's Christian Horner, Williams's Adam Parr and Mercedes GP's Ross Brawn, who has experience of running of his own team, believed to be the leading contenders.

Whitmarsh said that the matter was on course to be discussed once the season had finished.

"It is due to come to an end later this year - that is as far as I know," he explained. "At the end of the year it will be good to take stock of how much time everyone spends on it and where we focus our efforts."

When asked if somebody had already been lined up for the position, Whitmarsh said: "Not yet, no. It will be voted probably November/December time."

I'd like to see Christian or Ross get it, they both know what it takes to lead forward in the best interests of things, Adam, mmm i still think he needs some experience of the top flight to maybe have an edge, but saying that, Williams are on an up, so we shall see.

Wait, didnt this person tell Hamilton to lie to stewards not long ago? Hmmm......

I would love to see Paul Stodart do this job as he is the man!

Oh, I thought Whitmarsh was in charge of McLaren at the time and gave the nod for this?

It makes me question my liking of McLaren as I dont like teams who do dirty tactics. I appriciate its business and most teams wont have a squeaky clean history but I dont know. I was a huge fan back in the Hakkinen days along with the Minardi and Orange Arrows team (mainly for Jos the boss) but now I feel more drawn to teams like Force India, Hispania, Lotus and Virgin.

It was Whitmarsh's first race, but he was unaware of what Ryan had told Hamilton. Hence the immediate suspending and then releaseing once it was made public.
