The F1PU Scrapbook

In this scrapbook, we will be posting a photo every now and then about a memorable moment in F1 to comment on it.

Jenson Button wins his first GP in Hungary 2006... could the winner have been different if it didn't rain?

Who could ever forget the memorable Hungarian GP of the 2006 season in F1?!
Everyone was expecting either a Mclaren or a Ferrari win, or even a Renault win despite their low qualifying positions, but rain had its word in this race.

That dramatic race witnessed very unexpected incidents. Kimi Raikkonen having an accident with Vitantonio Liuzzi just 25 laps after the start of the race. World champion Fernando Alonso experiencing a tyre problem in the 51st lap; ending his chances for any points in that race. That's not to mention the other accidents and spins resulting in only 13 drivers finishing the race. Clearly, rain played a major role in shifting the tides back and forth in the race.

Button who qualified 14th, managed to win a race where not even the 7 times world champion Michael Schumacher could get any further than the 8th position, nor could the other fast Ferrari driver Felipe Massa get any further than 7th. It's also remarkable that Button finished 30.8 seconds ahead of his nearest opponent Pedro de la Rosa who was driving a Mclaren Mercedes and who finished second.

F1 fans all around the world witnessed Jenson Button's first win in Formula One. One very memorabale photo was taken of Button where his eyes were so wide open showing his extreme happines. A day that he'll never forget nor will Honda ever forget.

But one question arises: could the winner have been different if it didn't rain?

Share your thoughts on this photo and the incident with the other F1PU members! :)

I would have been very different.. rain is the only situation where the Honda can perform at all. Looking back to Europe this year, Jenson made it up to 4th position from 17th on the grid, only to be caught out by the flooded turn 1 a lap later. Bad luck may have been all that stopped him from getting a points finish that day.

Were it a dry race, Massa probably would've won. The McLaren wasn't good enough to beat Ferrari's or Renaults that year, so Kimi wouldn't have had a chance anyway. Add to the fact that the Hungaroring is near impossible to overtake on (in dry conditions, at least!), and you've got a combo where Schumi, Alonso and Button (even though the car was uncompetetive already) would have had no chance of a win, and would've had a Massa-like 2007 race. Add the rain though, and you had the best race of 2006, and the best result I'd had in 63 races - A British Win!

I think the winner would have difinitely been different if it didn't rain.

Button has a terrible car this season, may be next season he'll be able to give a better performance with a better car, or may be a better team.. who knows!
