Why is it when a driver is about to win a race and cross the finish line, they lift off before the line and steer their car over to the pit wall?

Surely this is only plausible to do AFTER the race?

In Singapore, Alonso lifted off which enabled Vettel to finish 0.2 seconds behind him.

Here is an example of a driver in F3000 doing this in Monaco:

Here.

Usually, they won't do that if the competition is really close behind, but Alonso must've had confidence Vettel wouldn't have passed. Nonetheless, it allows them to celebrate with their team and allows photographers to have it easier to take a picture of them when they cross the line.

But surely it is a sign of arrogance and cockiness.

If I were them, I would cross the line first, before slowing down to conserve the engine and lower the fuel mix.

No it is a sign of happiness and thanks for the team. If you think this is cocky, ride home on your unicorn, and pet some fluffy bunnies while mommy dearest fixes up some hot apple pie.

But do it after the race, it would be embarrasing to spin out just before the finishing line.

There was a video on Youtube (forgot what it's called) and there was a guy in a car who was a bout to cross the finish line and stuck out one hand and head out the window and started cheering before spinning and hitting into a wall, several seconds later, everyone overtakes him.

Trust me, its a sign of thanks and gratefulness from the driver to the team, better photograph opportunties. but if you do think what you do, then i agree with sam :)

But there's no harm in doing it AFTER the finish line.

And what if Alonso lost in Singapore? That would be mighty embarrasing wouldn't it?

It'd be awfully hard to spin the car driving in a straight line as they do there it's one swerve to the left or right and that's it, nothing more or less than making a defensive move on a straight really.

To emphasise this further, look at how Alonso celebrated his win in Spain in 2006.

I think it's the natural thing to do. We never have nose to nose finishes so it's a pretty safe thing to do ( these are F1 cars not Go-Karts  )

Only one guy has ever crashed after the end of a race, and that was the only time he ever won. If Alonso didn't celebrate, he would look like he doesn't care. If you ask me, I think they should do a NASCAR, find a big run off area, and doughnut until their tyres are not there any more, then spin some more!

Nah, engines are too precious.

Which guy was this?

If I won an F1 race :) I would celebrate AFTER crossing the line.

Part of my job is to keep this place clean. Leet speak is annoying and hard to read and I don't want to see it on the boards. We're not a bunch of 13 year olds discussing pokemon. Oh and yes I can edit your posts and will to remove any further leet speak.
