I sometimes used Spears with Fran, hehe, for roleplaying purposes, she was the "Freya" of my party XP, in bosses and towerds the end of the game i changed back to bows though >
I actually use them, because i feel as if i was controling a "Dragoon" (Job class) from the previous FF tactics, so it help to buy the fantasy. Also, they are very useful when you know the enemy you are facing, because of their elemental abilities, especially the Gungnir combined with an Oil inflicted enemy. Anyway, i was a little dissapointed because the lances/Spears are not considerated long range weapon, like the guns, so they cannot attack aerial enemies, although they had double range (speaking of short range weapons (Swords, knives, ...))  in the FF tactics games.
I'm no expert, but tend to give my characters in any given party different weapons to see what they can do with them - sword, axe, gun, bow, pole, etc. I watch the damage versus various enemies to keep an eye that the weapons are as powerful as I can afford to have.
Hmm... I'm not into lances! I know this is bad but oh well... unfortunately I just keep using the weapons I love most regardless of how well another one would be better...
Hmm...I had every character using different weapons for different reasons. Vann used swords because he was the main character. Balthier used guns because anything else would be unnatural. Fran used bows for the same reason. Penelo used staves because I bought her a porkload of magics when I got her 2,000 liscense points. Basch used hammers and axes because he was babarian-esque. Ashe used spears because Vaan was using swords...
The only spear I would like to be using is when I get my hands on the zodiac spear.......and which I'm probably still a couple of hours away from doing so!

But...It's just weird! I mean, he hops off of his little hover thing with a gun. He holds the gun to break into the palace. What better weapon for him than a gun?
Hey are lancers considered as spears, cuz it's thats the case, then I really don't like the idea of having the team equipped with spears. Not really fond of Kimahri. But anyway, it's our wish how you wish to arm your team.
