Aside from the FMVs, I cannot see how can people say that the graphics of Final Fantasy VIII is far superior than Final Fantasy VII. By just looking at the towns, world map and battles, everything is choppy. I can neve rforget how annoying the looks of Ultimecia (just before the final battle... while seating in her throne). Really ugly!

Maybe FF7 looks overall a lot better than FF8, but that is because FF8 risked a lot more, I suposse the designers wanted to make a much more realistic work, but due to the PS1 abilities...

I like the character designs for VII better (the high-poly combat models anyway).. Square tried to add details to the VIII characters with more detailed textures, but the PS1 just couldn't do that efficiently enough. Better just have one-colored textures and work with lighting like they did in VII. However, whenever I play some VIII again, I'm stunned at how much the CG improved from VII to VIII.

I would agree alot. outside of the character animations, the backgrounds go at like 2-3 FPS (really choppy). The characters, while they have more detail, are REALLY REALLY pixelated. So I didn't like that.

It seems to me that they tried too hard to make it a more visual game.

I agree completely that the overworld and the character models themselves are just too blury to make out. I think Square was more focused on the character attitudes, storyline and FMV's to actually try to upgrade the overworld and battle system visuals. From what I remember reading about in reviews, Square was trying to get away from the anime/cartoony character/world models of VII and make the characters more "human" to make it easier to believe the storylines and places in the world. To that affect they did a good job but it would have looked nicer if they didn't rush the process. I'm glad they learned their lesson and applied it to IX. IMO IX was beautiful and visuall superior to anything on the PSOne.

I agree with you FG, Square just tried to do the impossible by making a realistic looking game actually look good on the PS1, as you can see the result was not very realistic at all...

Yeah, they did try to make it more realistic. The outcome wasn't too bad.

Compared to all 3 PSOne games I think VIII had the worst graphics (aside from FMV's which were very well done). The draw system was repetitive, buggy, and not very creative (however the Junction system was pure genius (wish that would come back), the overworld was confusing because all of the terrain looked the same, and the character animations (walking, running, battle stances, etc.) were not, well "realistic". . I don't know about you but I don't run with my arms at 90 degree angles and I know for a fact I can't jump backwards over 10 feet to my original position. Even the magic left something to be desired when cast. Now don't get me wrong the missions, character's attitudes, and storyline was S-E qualified work for the time and console. But to say the graphics were the best of all 3 on the PSOne sounds more like the musings of a fan of that game and that game only. VII's scenery and battle scene backgrounds well very well done and overall IX was a much more visually pleasing game in it's entireity.

FFVIII's characters don't look like colored blocks stuck to one another. FFIX looks better than both

FFIX was too cartoony, but yeah it was the best graphics out of all of them. But then again it came out after them two so you would expect it to have better graphics

Guys, we're not talking, here, about the art style (anime block vs. realistic). It's more on how it was presented. They say FF8 has better grapics, but when you compare the quality (excluding FMVs), FF8 is more pixelated especially during battles... Same goes with FF9. While in FF7, especially in battles, the graphics is smoother.

i love the character models in 7. they are my favorite, thats one reason why i loved the game so much, they characters looked so nice during the battles. even your character when ur just running around is beautiful-for that time. 8 was just horrible, its really hard to play that game because of the graphics...i wish they kept the character design in 8, that would have made it better IMO.

I can definitely appreciate what people are saying about how VIII sometimes looks pixilated.  VIII was the first FF I ever played.  When I played VII after VIII I just felt like I was controlling some bizarre mouthless figures made out of lego blocks.  I appreciate the atempt at the realistic look more rather than the cartoony one.  VIII has better looking water and scenery and at certain points in the story allows you to move the character through FMV's.  I know we're not talking about the FMV's, but it's amazing that you can move in the middle of them.  VIII also had better looking environments that actually interact with you more.  Also there's more realistic movement whether it's leaves rustling in the breeze or light coming through some windows.  I know there are complaints about how pixilated the characters looked, but at least they had hands with digits instead of weird stumps.  I still think that VII is the most monumental FF ever created, but VIII really took the graphics to the next level.  Progress just isn't always smooth.

Hmm well i kinda go both ways on this one..  ff 8 sqaure did trie to attemp at making a more realistic  presentaion and it did end up severely pixelated, however, and keep in mind ive played all of my ff games in chronological order.  i never stoped and said to myself " hmm these graophics are choppy and are hard on my eyes" i just tol;d myself that it was a difffrent aproach to the graphics design, and i liked it. the only extreme difference between 7 and 8 was the character designm. i found that 8 had a much more attractive setting. If u stop and think back, the majority of 7 had the camera rather distance to the characters, and the times that it was very close up we all saw that it as well wasent to impressive.. i personally would prefer a character that looks human like over a character that is 100% polygonal even if its pixelated

But its apparent to all of us that with every new ff title taht comes out, square usually improves themsleves.  So i think that every ff game that came out since 1 has stepped up one at a time in graphical quality. But hey if ya really hate the pixels in 8 just set ur ps2s visual options to smooth.. poof   LOL

ps: Actually now that i think about it 4 had a rather crisper look than ff5 did,,,, hmm?

... you like to write paragraphs, don't you? that's why you have so little posts for a tapper... If the graphics are bad, then I lean on story. if story's bad, then it sucks. to me, I mostly care about the story even though pretty graphics look good.

I'll agree that X was far more monumental for it's time than VIII, but I still don't buy that VII's graphics are better than VIII's.  VIII has anatomically correct characters and a more interactive environment.  Enough said.

or... enough to be said. Although VIII was more Anatomically correct, it was pixelated. the PS has less power than a PS2 so anatomically correct means pixelation. VII was anatomically incorrect, but the figures were betterly textured and ultimately smoother than VIII. That is how people make their argument about VII's graphics opposed to VIII. Square didn't fail the game, but instead only didn't make it too too well graphic wise. Story wise it was great. as well as VII was great. Although VII had graphical advantage. But they're both great games and in the end are classics... your thoughts and opinions are somewhat welcome I suppose.
