Many people criticize FFVII's field grpahics especially the characters. They say it is ugly. It looks like lego, etc.

I don't know, personally, I love it. The deformed characters gives me the best esperiece for a fantasy game. I like the anime style used in them... no nose, big eyes, short bulky limbs, etc.

What's you opinion about it?

it really depends on the gamer's taste for graphics. i kinda like it too, probably because i cant really complain much about the graphics of the series.

well..yeah it looks a bit dodgy here and there.. but what to expect fomr a machine that old? gosh.. it looked awsome for its time.. and still do actually... tha nime style is nothing wrong, but take a game like Dragon Quest.. it looks sure better still using the same type of anime feeling on character rendering as FFVII

i like it, it's not the best graphics you can get but it still gives a great feel to the game despite the almost blocky character models, it's an old game, you can't expect the graphics to be great

For the one that look only at the graphics and not to the rest of what the game has to offer i am really sorry. Thay have bad taste at games, that is what i say. maybe a game hasm't got the best graphics, but you should look at the rest of it. the gameplay, the story, the little thing that keeps you in front of it maybe more than 100 hours. All a gamer can do is try and give the game a chance. Final fantasy 7 was the beginning of a new era in graphics, but it was great and it still is.But with the FF 8 the best times in graphics began. I still have lots of Playstation 1 games in my collection, most of them Final fantasy genre, but i loved to play them all.A few months ago i got Legend of Dragoon & Lunar 2 Ethernal Blue and i remembered of the pleasant moments that i had a few years ago when i started playing all of the Final Fantasy series. in the end i say that not the graphics are so important, it is important what is beneath it. All the best to you guys out there that still look into the heart of a game.

I like the graphics in DQ! HAs a great feeling to it.. but that is not what this thread is about so.. *haha* to talk a bit.. I think good graphics along with a great gameplay and good depth in storyline makes a RPG really, really good Great graphics makes me embrace the world Im playing in better.. Square has alwyas been very good in developing graphics for their games.. and as I said earlier.. FF7 is looking awsome if you see what kind of system its running on..So taking that and the fact that is one of the ebst darn RPG's I ever played .. only a re-make of the game can compete with it 0)

The field graphics are good because the characters and backgrounds fit together stylistically.  They somehow managed to make those super-deformed characters have different moods.  Vincent was dark and moody, just like Tifa was wide-eyed and innocent.

My only gripe about FF7--my favorite of the series, by the way--is that the character models in FMVs were inconsistent.  Sometimes the prerendered characters were the same as the 3d models and sometimes, like when Cloud rode his sweet motorcycle out of the Shinra building, the models were much more detailed.  But this thread is about field graphics, which I like for the reasons above.

That's DQ8, not 7. They have a DBZ feel to it because both are drawn by the same person. He also did Chrono Trigger

I can't really complain about the field graphics in FF7. The backgrounds were amazing for the time but the characters didn't interact with the backgrounds well, sometimes i coulden't help but think of them as two separate things and that just ruined the atmosphere for me on a few occasions. FF7's graphics take a little getting used to but it helps give the game its own unique feel.

He might be punk. We don't know. Square forgot to supply him with a personality, so we have no way of knowing.

If he is trying this out, he should quit. Hell, he probably gets high off the fumes of the hair spray that it takes to make it stay like that

Bad graphics do not a bad game make. If that was true. Final Fantasy IV, V and VI would suck, but they are held on high as 3 of the greatest games to ever grace any system

FFVI was never considered to be of bad graphics. Aside from Star Ocean and Chrono Trigger, it has the best graphics in the SNES days.

Well at the time it came out the graphics were very good so i'm not complaining. Also the character models have a certain appeal to them that makes us remember them more vividly and whenenver I imagine the characters I imagine them in their original forms.

It just depends if you can see past new technology or not. If you only play games for new graphics and high polygon counts, then you cannot possibly appreciate FFVII. If you can realize how high end the graphics were at the time, or can see through the older technology to see the art and themes behind the characters and backgrounds, then you can appreciate FFVII as I and many other people do.

I think the FF7 characters are great because they're unique.  No other Final Fantasy has characters like that, they're 3-D versions of 2-D sprites from like FF6.  Also, I have a theory that the low quality level may come from Square originally having the idea of continuing with Nintendo, on the N64, but then switching to Playstation when they discovered they couldn't do the FMVs on N64, but thats a theory based a lot in my general buy in to the "Lets hate on the N64 except for a few choice games" idea.  So, yeah, FF7 character models rock.

To be honest, I can't really say that FF8 and 9 have better graphics than FF7. Sure, with regard to FMVs, FF9 is superior. However, I just don't like the graphics in battle, especially the one used in FF8.

Ummm, I could easily say that 9 and 8 are superior to 7.  Perhaps not as much in battle, which is still improved, but the just walking around is greatly improved and the FMVs in 8 are also a rather vast improvement over 7.  You can tell just watching AMVs featuring the two games, the animation in the FF8 FMVs is much smoother and the graphic level is up.
