I'm pretty sure I made 2 similar threads quite a long time ago...Oh well , this time I'm going to cover Excalibur , Gilgamesh , Odin , Fenrir and Ragnarok.Viewers are free to include their own knowledge into this thread , rather than talking about gaming all the time , it's good to expand our knowledge , no?

Excalibur - I'm pretty sure you don't need me to tell you what this is. Excalibur is a majestic sword that is related to the Athurian Pendragon legend and was wielded by King Arthur , the High King of Britain. There are multiple explanations on how the young Arthur received his sword , either by pulling it out of a stone or receiving it from the Lady of the Lake. Excalibur also have multiple names such as the Caliburn , Caledfwlch , Calabrun , Calibourne , Callibourc , Escalliborc...well , you get the idea. Excalibur's scabbard , too , have unusual powers but it was never mentioned through out the Final Fantasy series. Excalibur is obviously a sword in the Final Fantasy series.

Gilgamesh - Gilgamesh is way cooler in the legends compared to the Gilgamesh you see in the Final Fantasy series. Gilgamesh's story was also told in ancient slabs that seems to tell the fact the Gilgamesh was the King of the first civillisation , Babylon ( It is now the state of Iraq ) and he was also known as the King of Uruk. Gilgamesh was a formidable King and when he had ordered his people to build a wall , the people prayed to a Gods that they would create a rival to match Gilgamesh's own strength. However , Enkidu , the Man of the Wild Beasts , became a good friend of Gilgamesh. Together , they achieved mighty deeds. However , Gilgamesh had offended a Goddess who had offered herself to him ( Apparently , Gilgamesh is both handsome and powerful ) by rejecting her offer , in the end , Enkidu was wasted by a disease that the Goddess have placed on him after the two had slain a Divine Bull that the particular Goddess have summoned to run amok on the residence of the people. Gilgamesh , fearing death , soughted a way of immortality but he returned home disappointed. For the full story , read it off the net or something...it's a bit too long to type out :P Well , I'm pretty sure you know who I'm referring to in the Final Fantasy series.

Odin - Did I mention him before..? I don't remember...well , whatever. The entire tale of Odin is a bit too big to even summarise so I'll just give out the more trivial details. Odin was a powerful God who resided in Asgard and his most prominent residence is Valhalla. Within these ancient halls , he would receive the Einherjar , souls of fallen warriors from the Valkyries ( Beautiful battle maidens that Odin chose personally , there are plenty of Valkyries but their tale is a different story entirely ) The horse he rode upon is Sleipner which was given to him by the God of Mischief , Loki. He also possess the head of Mimir , whose head was chopped off but it retains the power to read the future. There are also a lot of things accossiated with Odin such as the Wild Hunt and the Valknut , basically , his the God of War in Norse Mythology. Odin was commonly used as a Summon in the Final Fantasy series , often causing instant death , possible as an inference of his spear Gungnir , a Spear that would never miss it's mark nor fail to kill.

Fenrir - Fenrir is a savage wolf who is to take part in the Twilight of the Gods , Ragnarok and kill Odin but the tale tells of many other ways of which Odin may die. Ironically , Fenrir is also the son of Loki. In the end of his savage massacre , he was taken to Valhalla by the Valkyries themselves to serve as an Einjerhar. Typical. It is used as a term for Cloud Strife's bike in Advent Children.

Ragnarok - In the Final Fantasy series , Ragnarok is commonly used as a term for swords or even airships but Ragnarok , in Norse Mythology , is the Twilight of the Gods where it is foretold that the Gods would fight and thus , bringing an end to the mortal world.

Genji - I need clarification for this. There are many "Genji"s when I searched for it , it may depict the "Original Rule" , something about a 60 years cycle , a literature that was made in the 1850s-1860s or so. Either way , Genji , in the Final Fantasy series , is often depicted as an armor set , often worn by Gilgamesh but ironically , in terms of mythology , their pretty much unrelated.

Fenrir is also a summon in the FF series. Like his Norse form, he appears as a wolf.

The last battle against Kefka takes a lot from the poem Dantes Inferno.

You should try to search "Tale of Genji", which by many scholars (including my professors and myself) is considered the very first ever "modern" novel to be ever written. The original saga was accredited to Marusaki Shikibu in the 11th century. Along side of the tale of Minamoto no **** (known as the Gikeiki), is considered to be the most famed and important piece of Japanese literature ever written. It's quite an undertaking, the Penguin translation I have is around 1400 pages, but it truly is worth it if you are truly interested in Japanese mythology and story telling. You guys should check it out if you wish to delve a little deeper into the Japanese Psyche, which in turn will most certainly enhance your FF experience.

DISCLAIMER- Just to let you guys know I did not pull this off of Wiki or other related sources, but I work in sinological research and am a grad student of East Asian archaeology

1400 pages?! That's a lot o.0 Well , I guess it's still considerably shorter compared to several other Mythological stories.

I hear you there brother. Although I think the real and original full translation is comparable. Maybe several 1000 page volumes. Regardless, I have only read that stuff for research. It's definitely not bedside reading. Good nonetheless   Â
