Yeah, thats probably a good idea. Go back out into the reactor, look for the secret area behind where Jesse is earlier on (Its hard to get behind her, but keep trying until you do) and there are some enemies that are really good for experience. There's also a shop through the door next to the save point, but you can only open it once you're at level 50. The shop actually has all the weapons for sale and most of the materia. Though it doesn't have the ones you get with Chocobos, but thats fine since you can buy a Gold Chocobo egg there that will hatch when you give it to the kid at the Chocobo farm later.
Oh, and this is for later, but make sure you get up to level 50 at least before the Forgotten Capital, and make sure you have Omnislash, otherwise you'll lose one of your characters (But I don't want to spoil it so I'm not going to say which one).
I know it sounds like a long process, but it does work. Hope it helps you out.
