Isn’t it essentially the same thing with the other previous battle systems? The only thing difference is you could see the enemies, avoid them, and move during the battles. Why are people complaining? Is it the so-called complex gambit system?

can't really "Avoid" them it's random hit and miss as in other installments but yea gambits are just instructions you can set up to you and your allys so you have a game plan for a big boss fight coming up exc.. I actually dnt use gambits all that much because I dnt care too much for them,

I thought you could run past them. Can you at least escape from them during the battle?

Okay. There's 2 types of run/walk. The regular one (the one you do in towns and fileds) and the one in battle stance. The latter will trigger if an enemy is within your characters' range of attack. If you hold the escape button, your characters will not go into battle stanc eeven if enemies are within their attack range. This means that their ATB bar will not be filled up thus allowing you to go on with your ordinary walk/run... allowing you to run away from the battle (not necessarily the attack of the enemies.

although if you are fast enough you won't get hit much (if any) and get away if your party is almost dead

The gambit system isnt that hard to understand. I dont know why so many complain about it. You can experiment different kind of gambit settings depends on what kind of situations you are in. Just be sure you know what kind of gambit your using.
