Is a 60 hour game a good idea, or would you prefer it to be a little shorter?

I, personally, haven't put 60 hours into the single player experience of a game in a long time. So, if you were someone like me in that case, would you be turned off by it?

Lately I have been playing games with small single player experiences and getting straight into the online, where I usually clock hundreds of hours into. That doesn't even feel like that much when you're playing it - but on paper it is massive. I'm getting this game... no matter how long it is. I do not wish it to be any longer and I think that it's as short as neccessary. That is my opinion, but I want to know yours. So fire away. :)

I've clocked in more than a hundred hours on both Final Fantasy X and XII and more than 80 on VII, VIII and IX, so, I should hope that it will have a 60 hour story and 40 hours worth of secrets at the very least.

People have no attention span nowadays, so great games can't have single player 'campaigns' longer than 6 hours because if it does people dont really understand and probably get lost in the depth of the story...'wuts a plot twist :S' so they need multiplayer to compensate spending so much on a game that you'll play for 6 hours when you can get 6 hours worth of film for much less.

You can't make those stereotypical claims unless you've been on both sides; e.g. you play RPGs and are a hardcore FPSer. Not everyone is a mouthy 12-year-old swearing on Xbox live, y'know. FPS games have depth. Whether you like it or not.

That's what I always thought. Call of Duty manages to be immerive and emotional, and this series proves that the game doesn't have to be a JRPG to have a great and gripping story.

Personally I prefer single player and little to no multiplayer. If a game revolves around its multiplayer than it isnt a game for me... but then again I dont like FPS at all so that needs to be taken into consideration. The only multiplayer I play is Uncharted 2 which I find very fun but it is a bonus to the already amazing story and single player content. I dont mind how many hours FFXIII is but I think 60 hours seems good with maybe a few more tacked on for optional stuff.

While I play games focussed on SP and MP (eventhough I don't play FPS) I prefer games that have an amazing, and long SP story to them. Because I'm not one to play MW2 until I hit level 70, like Bio. I want to be able to spend lots of time in the game's SP. MP is like, an added bonus for me. The only MP I've really been into is the Uncharted 2 MP, and that's mostly because I love the SP so much.

But, on-topic. FFXIII is sure to be long. I mean, there's no way this story is gonna be like 6 hours or so.

I think XIII should have just as many side quests as XII did, so I think it should be no shorter than 60 hours.

Keep in mind that FFXIII will not have multiplayer, so it's only natural that the single player will be longer to compensate for that.

I'm curious as to why you're so fond of multiplayer games. I'm the total opposite, I usually never play them for a long time. I find them restrictive, shallow and there's only so much content you can play before you start doing the same things over and over again.

To give a rather noncomittal answer, it depends. If they actually have enough relevant content to where you never feel like you're just running around doing something pointless in that 60-hour time period, then it's great. If, on the other hand, you do feel like you're running pointless errands or there's not enough story to fit that massive length of time, then it won't work. I personally felt like FFXII could have done with being a little bit shorter, so I'm hoping they go a little more in-depth storywise this time around. It took me around ~50 hours to finish XII, usually around 30 hours for most other FF games, but I'm hoping that XIII will be the longest yet. I'm sure there will be loads of sidequests to fill up over a hundred hours; that's something that it needs since, as someone mentioned, there's no multiplayer.

Course. The longer the game, the more I feel I got my money's worth.

With games like Persona 3 FES which can take 130+ for a single playthrough, 60 hours is rather mild for me now :P

As aforementioned most multiplayer games are shallow and restrictive, and after a couple of hours they become repetitive. I prefer 50-60 hour campaign as opposed to a 6-8 hour campaign and repetitive multiplayer. Games as such do not warrant a purchase from me. The more content, and the longer the experience the easier it is for me to pay full retail price.

A game doesn't really have to be lengthy (though I don't mind it being that way) for me to invest in it. It's fine if it's short as long as I "enjoy" it. But as far as multiplayer is concerned, I grew tired of FPS games very soon and really haven't gotten it.

As for a 60 hour game, I personally have enjoyed all the FF games and have put in over 80 hours in each of them. FF7: CC which took less than 40 hours was also fun so I can't really rate a game based on the time it takes to complete. It's all about my experience over the course of playing the game.

If the game is good enough to keep the fun going for 60 hours, sure why not? Sometimes with such games, I'll switch out of it for awhile for a shorter game, then come back to it after such a break. I don't use online multiplayer so I don't benefit from strong multiplayer games so a short singleplayer game can be a tad annoying but still, most have a good length nowadays.

Same here. I love long RPG games 60 hours or more the better.

The game been in devlopment for a long time and ive been waiting since E3 2006 so i would hate for it to be short

I don't know if you're like me, but I absolutely love spending my time getting all of my favorite characters best weapons. I spent such a long time in FFX getting a time of zero seconds in the chocobo racing, dodging a hundred consecutive lightning bolts, and playing blitzball matches. lol Personally I feel like a 60+ hour game just gives you more for the money you spent on it. If you're having a blast, why not want it to last as long as possible?
