Square Enix's 360 impact.

I am not here to ask how people feel about Final Fantasy XIII releasing on the Xbox 360, we have a topic for that. I just wanted to express the impact SE has had on the RPG community on Microsoft's console. Right now the system does have the most roleplaying games available on home console. The future for roleplay games is absolutely bright on this platform considering the influence from Japan and the West. Now Square Enix has stepped into Mistwalker's home with not only Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4, and Infinite Undiscovery. But, with Final Fantasy XIII as well and I hope Sakaguchi get's pumped off of this to make his next great RPG. And then there's Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls, and Mass Effect! What could possibly make any RPG fans day is a announcement of KOTOR 3(a what if situation) here at E3.

With Final Fantasy XIII landing on the Xbox 360 it feels like the genre is well diverse on this platform as opposed to what was seen on the original Xbox and PS2. I think there will be more companies in Japan who take SE's idea(with FFXIII) when it comes to making games multiplatform here in North America and Europe.

Well, I wouldn't call it 'Square-Enix's idea'. We've already seen similar stuff with titles such as Devil May Cry 4, Ace Combat 6, Star Ocean and Resident Evil 5. It's just that it was nothing major ...until yesterday, that is. If successful, I'm sure this will convince many more Japanese developers to join in.

I am not expecting something drastic to happen, though. You can already see people making up theories about how PlayStation 3 is doomed and Xbox 360 will 'win' this generation and outsell the Nintendo Wii with this announcement, but this is just like GTA IV all over again.

I completely agree. Honestly, I can't wait to see what Sony has because I know they have something up their sleeve too at E3. Actually I was refering to Japanese developers(maybe smaller companies) bringing exclusive titles for the PS3 in Japan to the Xbox 360 in North America and Europe. Final Fantasy XIII isn't going to release in Japan on the Xbox 360 but only in the west due to the installed base.

GTA 4 got 10 on ps3 so x360 also got 10!

Thank god MGS 4 is not on x360 !

I don't think that's going to happen at all. If I remember correctly, the PlayStation 3 is selling equally well in all regions, so it's too big of a market to ignore. We might see a 360 port only for the West, similar to FFXIII, but I don't think the PS3 versions will be cancelled altogether for NA and Europe.

360 is definitely the RPG system for this generation so far. Even with SE support, I doubt it will help Microsoft move units in Japan but it's likely to help move more units here, especially with the new price drop. Unless Dragon Quest becomes an 360 exclusive, there's no helping the 360 in Japan. If that was to happen, that would be a major impact.

I wonder if the 360 will now feature a blu-ray player soon, that also play games. It'll make it easier for ports of PS3 games (like FFXIII) & open the door to put games like MGS4 on the 360. It'll make it easier for SE & other companies to port it instead of looking for ways to cram it on DVDs. Also, if they can put FFXIII on DVD's, what's stopping them from getting all these other games that they say can only be possible on the PS3 due to storage space. Just spit balling out loud.

The only problem I see here is Sony fanboys hating on the 360 for getting games that "were" exclusives. Hello! I don't see a problem with more than one console getting a game, it means more people can play it. I'm not getting a PS3 because I've got a 360 that's getting all the games I want. If I miss 1 or 2, I don't care. FFXIII Vs I could care less, as long as I get FFXIII. KH3 may change my mind but right now I see no problem with consoles getting the same games. I'm not a fanboy for any of the three consoles. I like the 360 more only because it's the only next-gen console I own, but you don't see me rubbing it in PS3 or Wii owners faces.lo_Reaper_ol

That's what I keep hearing from Xbox 360 owners. "Stop complaining. What's wrong with sharing your game ? It doesn't make it any worse." But it does, actually. Both machines have a very different architecture and because they decided to release it on both, they will probably have to sacrifice content that could otherwise be done on a PlayStation 3 exclusive. That's my only gripe about it.

Which is pretty impressive when you think about it. The 360 has always been seen as the shooter's console and most of its RPGs don't even do very well.

If at first it isn't for the console I have and they sarcrifice extra content to bring it to the console I have, then I will be happy. Otherwise, I don't see what the problem is. If its for both consoles then no one can say "What then? You can't play this game because you don't have the console." or something to that effect. Would you be a PS3 owner, by any chance?

I'm really curious to see how the 360 version actually turns out. Since FFXIII was/is being developed on an engine designed from the ground up to run on the PS3, porting it won't be an easy job.

Microsoft paints this rosy picture that they are just killing it out there but the fact is that the PS3 sales have been growing while the 360 sales have flattened considerably. In every market except the US, the PS3 outsells the 360. And even in the US for 2008, they've been neck and neck.

And I wouldn't write off the PS3 in the RPG category yet. It's got Disgaea 3, Valkyrie Chronicles, White Knight Story, TES: Oblivion, Folklore, Last Remnant, Fallout 3, FFXIII, FFXIII vs, Eternal Sonata and probably some others I don't know about.

Well, I'm not gonna argue about sales because I don't really care as long as I get to play the game but out of them games the 360 has Oblivion, Last Remnant, Fallout 3, FFXIII, and Eternal Sonata. The ones that are left might not be exclusives. They might get ported later or something to that effect. What about Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Two Worlds? That's just to name a few. There's also Infinite Undiscovery coming out.

Way off topic but, Enchanted Arms was a very good game that most reviewers didn't even give a chance. If you would like to read a more objective (at least in my opinion) review go read the review on RPGFan. I also liked Penny Arcade's take on how most reviewers reviewed the game.

Seeing as how Vs XIII is supposed to have a mix of KH and DoC gameplay(at least that's what the creators said), it's almost guranteed to fail. XIII may or may not.

No you look, if you could understand what I was meant with that statement then you wouldn't have jumped all over me. Breadman said "It's on PS3 I saw it last time I was in town" and I CORRECTED him by telling him that "It was on the 360 8 months before the PS3." All I was doing was correcting breadman. I get jumped for backing the 360 when PS3 fanboys take it to town, and at the slightest hint of me downing the PS3, I get jumped there, too! WTF is up with that?

wtf is wrong with a game going multiplatform. why are people so upset about it. it's a game.

As long as my 360 holds up, I don't mind any game going multiplatform. But I have to disagree that i would rather have a game keep all it's contents & stay exclusive then dummy down so that it can go multiplatform. I know, easy for me to say. Not everyone can share in my view if they don't own all the current systems. But the fact that FFXIII will be delay even more than it would have originally makes me wish they didn't bring it to the 360. Had it been able to be worked out where it would still drop as they planned, then I wouldn't mind at all but now they're messing with the time table of it's release because they haven't even started working on the 360 version yet, which stinks. We don't know what type of complications it will face which may further delay the release.

It's time like this I wish I knew how to read & speak Japanese. They'll get it first in it's original form while we wait for localization & all that jazz on top of waiting for the 360 version to be complete. There goes at least 6 extra months if not a year of waiting. I hope some great games come out to help pass the time. But once FFXIII comes out in Japan next year, & people are sharing their experiences & the story gets more fleshed out & reviews start dropping great scores & people yelling "BEST FINAL FANTASTY EVA!!!", that's when the regret of it going multiplatform for all PS3 owners will really kick in.

I believe it will sell much better on the PS3 than the 360. I think most people who has a 360 wasn't worried about playing FFXIII to begin with & other people who were on the fence, who don't own a 360 or PS3, but are Final Fantasy fans might go with the PS3 version since the controls would feel more natural to them. People who own both systems I think would get the PS3 version also just cause they probably played all the PS1 & PS2 versions. I know I'm getting the PS3 version, if I'm still breathing by the time it comes out. But I feel it won't help sell systems just like GTAIV didn't help sell systems. At least not like MGS4 helped move units. Just my thoughts. It's all subject to debate.
