White Mage/Medic

Focus: Heals party HP and cures negative status
Specialty: Holy, Full Revive, Full Cure, Curaga/ja, Esuna/ga

Black Mage/Ravager

Focus: Offensive spells.. Kill, kill, kill!
Specialty: Flare, Ultima, Doomsday

Blue Mage

Focus: Absorbs enemy-skills and use it against them and to protect your allies
Specialty: Shockwave Pulsar, Big/Mighty Guard, White Wind, Bad Breath

Time Mage/Saboteur/Synergist

Focus: Basically a support mage.. Buffs and Debuffs are his forte.
Specialty: Meteor, Haste/ga, Slow/ga, Brave, Faith

Red Mage

Focus: Fighter-mage (mid-level white and black magic)
Specialty: Able to equip heavier armors and swords

Summoner

Focus: Calls on friendly monsters/guardians to help your cause
Specialty: Bahamut, Knights of the, Round, Eden, Magus Sisters, Zodiac

Others (Oracle, Sorcerer, Geomancer, etc.):

Black Mage, of course.

I have to agree with FG, I've always been fond of Vivi. Even though, as FG, he was innocent and righteous--a far contrast to that of the typical Black Mage--I've always still thought he was quite cool. :)
