Not trying games when below a certain score ?

Ihave been picking up loads of cheap cube games lately and I have a habit of skipping past anything that scores below 80%. The deals I get are like 4 for £20 so you end up dipping into the lower scoring region to make up the 4 deal. I have been struggling to choose from some of the lower scoring titles but their is a 7 day return policy so you can try and then swap them if you don't like e'm. Some titles I have picked up have deserved the low scores but I have been surprised at how good some have been. PNO3 got poor scores but I love it and am keeping it, R Racing again got very poor scores but if you like Ridge racer then you will most probably like it (just play it with bumper cam). I like it far more than the NFS games, it just feels like something you would play in the arcade. Virtua Striker 3 was £3 and I love it more than most soccer games I've played for ages, it looks really good and plays how you would expect an arcade soccer game to play (I am not a soccer fan so lack of complex controls help me). Gauntlet Dark Legacy, plays very retro and I have spent ages on it and love it. Yes it has old graphics but I have kept it because it plays well like alot of the retro games. I would have skipped all of these titles due to low scores by reviewers but have had tons of fun with them at low cost. I would consider them decent games and am now looking at used titles a little more carefully. Does anybody else feel the same way about a game they have with a really poor score, any suggestions for games where you think the review is way out would help because their must be more out their. I guess it is all down to personal taste but at the low prices of some low scoring titles they are worth trying.

Yeah, most of my Gamecube games are either 8 or 9... I only get games in the 7s if I get a certain gut feeling that I know I'll enjoy them, like 007 Nightfire, Timesplitters 3, and Geist.Funkyhamster

Exactly. Most games I will try even if they have a mediocre score. You will know if you will like the game by either site of the cover or script on the back.

Not too sound like a complete ponce here but I try never to judge whether a game's worth a purchase on a review you never know it may turn out great in your book, I just try and use reviews to see what features the game has. Hybrid Heaven the N64 is a prime example, I loved this game :)

While on occasion I've taken a flyer on a cheap game that had a low to mediocre score I've come to realize that most games that score below a 7 are probably not worth my time. If I see some game in the shop that I've never heard of before but something about the box makes me consider it if it's really cheap...under $10 I may take a flyer on it. (This was even more common when Rhino was still open and I could bring it back if I hated it)...however if I'm not sure then I usually come look at the rating and review.

Worst burn...I when ahead and bought "Metal Dungeon" even though the review was horrible...and I found out the game was every bit as bad as they said it was.

So for me, lower than a 7 will probably get me to save my money.

I tend to agree with GameSpot's reviews, so no, I don't often go out and buy games that get poor reviews. And when I do anyway, I usually get buyer's remorse pretty quickly. PN03 is an example; It was on sale for $20, a GameCube exclusive, and by Capcom. I honestly couldn't see how it could be a bad game... but I hated it. I thought it was awful.

There have been a fwew times, however, that I've bought a game regardless of reviews andended up liking it. Ubisoft's XIII is a great example. Loved that game. Oh, and I loved Contact for the DS despite its review score as well.

I agree - you can't base a game on it's ratings. I think those who limit themselves to high rated games are missing out.

While I thought RE4 was pretty amazing, it doesn't get the play time on my Cube that other "lesser" games get.

Looking at Metacritic, these games on average rated below 65% yet I think they're great fun:

To each their own but considering the limited library of the Cube, I think any serious fan needs to look beyond the scores when getting new games.

It's only limited if you have the money to buy enough games... :P I find I tend to agree with the tastes of reviewers, for some reason... there are very few times I've loved a 6-5 game or hated a 9 game.
